I would love alllllll the videos on writing! It’s so hard to find “how to teach writing” information out in the SOR world. I want to REALLY revamp how I teach writing to my 2nd graders next year, so I’d love all the info you’ve got! ❤ im planning on reading the writing rope this summer. I’m halfway through the writing revolution. I’m also going to take the writing course from cox campus. Just doing everything I can to teach it better next year!

Love the way you break it down....wish I had known about you when I was working in an IB school that had no specific reading or writing program because - as the director said - "IB is transdisiplinary and reading and writing should be taught within units of inquiry". Thank you again and again

Thank you so much for this! I love your SJ writing very much. I have been using it for three years now. Our district uses Lucy Caulkins, but I secretly use your writing instead. LC is just to overwhelming for me.

very interested in learning more about how (or if it's even possible) to utilize these elements with Calkins writers workshop, in my view The Writing Rope and Writing Revolution provides much more explicit instruction starting with sentence formation and that appeals to me much more, would love to hear more about your take and ideas for integrating or if you even feel writers workshop could work with these explicit instructional approaches

Oof! These are things I have been pondering for the last few years as I've been researching best practices in writing. My short answer is no, I do not think it is possible to truly teach effective, structured writing within LC's writing workshop. Do I think you could make it your own and add lessons, units, and activities to promote more explicit instruction on sentence structure and handwriting, and grammar, etc.? Yes - but then are we really doing her writing workshop anymore? There are certain parts of the writing workshop approach as a whole (not LC's per se, but the original WW model) that are great and research-backed. Like teaching the writing process, for example. The original lessons I would teach within my WW were very explicit and structured so I would keep that, of course. But there is certainly a lot to be reworked within the popular Calkin's WW! I have really taken The Writing Rope and The Writing Revolution to re-vamp my writing instruction and trying to fuse it with the "good" things from my previous WW (explicit lessons within genres, teaching the writing process - adapted to K-2, of course, using the gradual release model, providing lots of modeling and scaffolds). It's been tricky, but rewarding! I hope that helps explain where my head is at lol!
