My guess is that aside from a visual indicator that the plug door isn’t closed/latched, the flag doors are probably also supposed to act like blowout panels to prevent structural failure due to pressurization with the EE door open. Especially since I’m sure there are proximity sensors that would alert the cockpit if the EE door wasn’t closed and latched anyways.
@NextGenerationMechanic Жыл бұрын
That's right as well!

Probably also to create an opening large enough to avoid being able to pressurize the plane and take off in this config.
@SgfGustafsson Жыл бұрын
@stephanemonfette106 You're kinda rewording what I already said. They would prevent structural failure by not letting that outer door ever act as part of the pressure vessel.
@stephanemonfette106 Жыл бұрын
@SgfGustafsson well not exactly, structural failure is one things I agree but dispatching with an unsafe conditions from a pressurisation standpoint can lead to unsafe higher than expected cabin altitude, crew warnings msg, oxygen masks dropping in the cabin. Also a burden from an operation point of view to reset all this equipment. Looks like in the video there is gaps between the pressure shell and fairing where air could potentially vent but I'm not sure about that.

Nice arrangement, and a sad commentary on the fact that earlier models of airliners have sometimes been forced to return to the gate during taxi out because the flight crew finally noticed the DOORS annunciator and master caution telling them that a door was open. Just as with engine cowl latches, if something is located on the bottom of the aircraft, nobody wants to bend a knee to check it on walk around.

Can you explain the use of this pressurize extra-door in the bottom of the plane? Obviously it is not used on a regular basis but for security or otherwise... I'm curious to know.
@NextGenerationMechanic Жыл бұрын
The pressurized door is to seal the cabin "airtight" to keep the cabin pressure on levels where humans can stay comfortably. The flappers on the door are there as a fail-safe/visual indication of the pressurized door is closed and locked properly.

The door inside the door, in front of the door to ensure the inner door is closed. Seems it would be easier to have a mechanism that interferes with the outer door closing when the pressure hatch is open.
@Kalvinjj Жыл бұрын
I would agree to that, but then it could be forced into place. I imagine those things ain't closing like a nice new car's door even when brand new, let alone after quite a few cycles and weather. Forcing doors closed has led to cargo doors being blown off (with the associated fuselage damage) from early 747s, and I could be wrong but I think the DC-10 as well.

The aft E&E compartment houses all of the large, liquid cooled, starter motor controllers. The ones that run the electric air compressors for cabin pressurization and the ones that supply starting power for the VFSG motors. VFSG stands for variable frequency starter/generators. The main powerplants on the 787 are started electrically. The starters are also the main aircraft generators. Two on each engine. Once the engine is started the starter becomes the electrical generator.

@rael5469 Жыл бұрын
The little flapper doors tell you when the inner pressurized door is not closed. The inner door must be closed for takeoff. The inner door is the access to the aft E&E compartment where various electrical components and computers reside. E&E stands for Electrical and Environmental (aircraft system) because the cabin pressure controllers also reside in the E&E compartment.

Why does this seem like a low-effort workaround for an engineering oversight ?
@obsidianjane4413 Жыл бұрын
As opposed to what? The lowest effort would be to not allow the cover to latch with the hatch unsealed. This is actually a pretty high effort to maximize the part count for a simple telltale.

@anbooba Жыл бұрын
@@dannyvdmoo I worked as a ground crew, Pilots walk around usually is done very early , usually when the pilots arrive at the aircraft, and check general condition, like tires, no visible dents etc., but latches, and there are quite a few of them, are the responsibility of the ground crew leader, who have to do a final walk around to make sure all latches, cargo, and fuel doors are locked.
@rael5469 Жыл бұрын
To answer your question, there is no warning light in the flight deck that these doors are open. But there is an indication if the inner pressurized door is open. And on the design side, if I'm not mistaken you can't close the larger panel if these flapper doors are open and the inner door is closed.....they would touch the inner door and hold the larger access panel open so you couldn't latch it. In other words, the inner door has to be closed and the flapper doors have to be flush in order to close the larger access panel. It's pretty ingenious.

So how to reset the baffle flush?
@rael5469 Жыл бұрын
You have to hold them closed while closing the larger panel. The larger panel must be flush in the opening and then close a nearby latch and they will stay closed. Unfortunately these doors get stuck closed and don't always pop open when they should. However, as others have said the door into the fuselage is monitored and the pilots would get a warning in the flight deck if it was open. Plus they would find it impossible to pressurize the aircraft if the inner door was open at takeoff.
