Some might say that Somi's dad wasted the coconut water inside, but if you've peeled many coconuts you'd know that, that coconut is way too old/ripe for the water in it to be drinkable. The older/riper the coconut get the more oily the water gets (not very tasty). Somi's dad probably knew this hence why he just sliced through it

it is Easier to peel the coconut when you trim the bottom downward until you see the shell or it is thin before the shell before you proceed to the upper parts. Since they have the bolo, they can make like a cross at the top then proceed with the rest by stabbing the skin of the coconut by bolo then slightly push it to opposite side to detach from the shell then peel it..

It's neither wrong nor right, it's just a way to open a coconut... It just depends on whether or not they want the coconut water in it, but looking at the coconut it's probably way to ripe/old for the coconut water to be drinkable. As the coconut get older/riper the water turn more oily (not very tasty. So the only think they would want from that coconut is just the husk for the fire and maybe the coconut itself(the white stuff) as that's still eatable and is quite tasty, though most people don't really eat those as it is they'll usually extract coconut milk from it.
