For about ten years I was in a Vineyard Fellowship, including leadership. The experience was welcomed, appreciated, valuable training for what was to come next. Your presentation of the Vineyard Association of Churches, including the disparities and tensions within it, is simply excellent! Thankyou.

I belonged to the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Colorado Springs, CO in the mid 80s under pastor Walt Dehart. I left because it lacked true discipline in the gifts. After the sermon, it became an ‘anything goes’ type session where EVERYONE spoke in tongues and EVERYONE thought they were a prophet. Like I said, very undisciplined.

Very true. I was a long time member of a network that labeled themselves nondenominational, but learned the roots are built on Mormonism and Vineyard practices and beliefs. I left because of the shallow and horrible theology (none of the leaders have proper seminary background. Not even the founder) and the contemporary worship style was also lacking reverence and bible truth.

I was there when the "outpouring of revival" from the Toronto Blessing. I spoke in tongues, I saw demons, "healing", I thought I was prophetic, all of that... It is a cult. period. The Vineyard church uses people's emotions and emotional music to manipulate people. I was in a cult.

Thank you for your testimony. I “came back to faith” at 26 into a “friend of Vineyard church” Felt I had a real transformative experience but then the next 6 years was too much sifting meat/bones and guarding myself from my baptizing pastor. Eventually confronted things in love and the church slowly disintegrated, rebranded and did the same thing all over with anew lead pastor a couple years later. My family transitioned to an even less defined non-denominational expression, but I kept having questions. I now find myself as a catechumen in the Orthodox Church while my wife and her family think I’m a heretic as they were nearly washed in the cloth vineyard/charismatics that don’t see any problem in not being at any one church for more than 7 yrs Either them leaving over differences, controversy or scandal.

I was raised in a Vineyard church in Iowa. Under pastor Dan Paxton, it grew from a new seed into a megachurch over the first 18 years of my life. The pastors always called it a "nondenominational" church. I didn't know there was more than one Vineyard until I was an adult. I can barely stand to be in a Protestant church anymore due to the homophobia, hypocrisy and mind games I was subjected to as a young queer Christian. The last time I was there they had a gift shop in the lobby, which grossed me out. My dad's family was Quaker and I honestly wish my parents had chosen to raise their kids with that over the Vineyard. I might not have left the church if they had.

@@skirmishj258 Their position when I was there was that people should have cishet marriages or remain celibate. I heard "love the sinner, hate the sin" when I was there- you wouldn't be shunned, but you would be made to feel ashamed of your feelings. They did purity pledges. I signed one at age 13 saying that our bodies belonged to God and therefore we would only have sex within a Christian marriage. This was in the 2000s. Years later my mom said they'd loosened up, but she's since left herself and the pendulum may well have swung back to where it was during the Bush administration. It's entirely possible that they're talking about children being "groomed" into transing their genders as many of their more open minded members left.
