0:54, actually you might be interested to learn that there are several laws surrounding the use of the term antique and vintage. For example, in some countries antiques are untaxable which means an antique is legally defined to be of a certain age which can require evidence and documentation. In other countries certain items (like animal horn used for buttons, canes or accessories) are illegal unless over a certain age, the laws are there to exempt antique items from other laws, and the 'age' of an antique is typically defined as being between 80-100 years old. This means that legally an item must be 80-100 years old to be considered officially 'antique' (depending on your country). Vintage is less well defined legally unless you look at other areas such as vehicles.

For clarification, I assume you mean antique is 80 - 100 years and older.

I practically only wear true vintage for a few reasons. Typically I just like the style that was popular 40-150 years ago. Clothes were also of higher quality and made from natural fibers which is nice. And a lot of it is also the memcrabilic aspect. Just the thought it existed and was likely wore by some business man in the 1940s or whatever time frame is really interesting to me

Very nice and useful video! In Poland, there is currently a trend for online stores (mainly on Instagram), which have in their name "vintage", although they often sell only second-hand clothes, which are not vintage, reproductions or even in vintage style. I am really annoyed by this trend of labeling every second-hand thing as vintage.

I remember talking to my mom about these terms way back before they were cool, and we had come to the conclusion that there was not only an age connotation, but a value connotation. If something was called 'old' it was being treated like junk, but 'vintage' and 'antique' added value to it. Retro is somewhere in between.
@ValeriePallaoro
@ValeriePallaoro 2 жыл бұрын
The thing about retro is that the older you are the more likely you wore it in your youth. Retro might be fun for today's 18-24 yr olds, but I wore it when it was new. Now it's old hat and that's why it's has less value than vintage/antique, but more value than 'old' to me, I might have some 'old' in my drawer, that you would call retro

Yes! Decade is FAR more informative, because it doesn't change. For example music: Club advertises RETRO NIGHT. What is that? Is it retro 80s - the decade that they were referring to when they said retro night when I was 19? Or has the term moved along with the passage of time, and they mean retro 90s music? (Or 85-95? I've heard that mix it's... odd.) Knowing what you're in for matters. Not that it has mattered for a year now; but regardless, clear communication attracts the people who are interested. What a concept.

I got my first reproduction piece last summer, a 1923 men's workwear shirt from PikeBrothers. And I love it! I tried it on at Fein und Ripp in Berlin and was completely suprised that it fit me. I can't seem to find a women's shirt that fits me right, but historical men's shirts apparently do! So I also got a Finkenwerder Fischerhemd :D

My favourite winter casual coat is a beautiful vintage Irish tweed walking coat (1950s). Constructed from a brown and beige herringbone, the heavy wool is wonderful and the raglan sleeves allow for a great amount of movement. And the Mrs. loves it, so that’s a win. ;) As always, your knowledge of classic menswear is invaluable; thanks for another informative video.

I will say I have a very oddly shaped body so I don't invest in clothes that are vintage because I would ultimately ruin it, but stuff such as furniture or jewelry is very exciting for me. My brother is actually getting my great-grandfather's silver pocket watch in inheritance, and knowing our great grandfather's story from WW1 adds a lot of warmth to it. There are a few pieces in our family we just won't let go of.

The spirit behind antique is tied to that 100 year mark, meaning no one is likely to be around today that had the item during their lifetime. Retro however, is very much past items that a person likely owned or seen in the stores during their lifetime. You may not have bought a phonograph new from the store when they first came out, but you likely bought a cassette tape in order to hear the latest music. Vintage is likely something your living parents had but was not on the store shelves during your time.

I disagree with your definition of "retro" and "vintage". I believe the correct definitions are: *Retro* is something new that looks old, is styled to look old or is a copy of something old. *Vintage* is something that is actually old. So, a retro jacket is a recently manufactured jacket styled AS IF it was from the 30's (for example) while a vintage jacket is ACTUALLY from the 1930s (or whatever).

Retro, if I'm not mistaken, is different from the way you defined vintage and antique. It is not an indicator of age as are the other two but rather a way to describe something as imitative of the past So something retro doesn't necessarily mean it's old but rather something that mimics something old. An authentic 50s diner table is vintage whilst a brand new Amazon purchased 50s "inspired" diner table is retro

Can you recommend to me some interesting fantasy books, which are either old enough to exist in a nice leather, cover, or which might be new, but therefore, in an old looking addition, because I would love to have some old looking books. Which I’m actually interested to even if I have generally books that look nice and old and other books, which are interesting because of this being two different things, I would really like to have some books who who bring together both of it
