It makes me extrordinarily happy to see people wassailing in North America. I love that yall also wasssail the Maples. This makes so much sense, and even if the Maples cant give us strong drink the same way as the apples can, they deserve our respect and ritual support at least as much

The 'good spirits' / 'bad spirits' story to explain wassailing of the trees smacks of Victorian and Edwardian folklorist myth making. The early writings on the subject stress good luck to the farmer and a bumper crop of fruit from the trees.
