I hope you cover William Randolph Hearst’s other grand property perhaps even less known St. Donat’s castle. Hearst’s home in the UK, a massive medieval castle that he expanded by destroying countless ancient buildings to create a fantasy castle.

In the 60s thru the mid 80's my father was the Woodlands Mgr. for appox. 60,000 acres of Hearst land in McCloud, Ca. Which is where Wyntoon is. He was a forester by occupation, he also gave guided tours of Wyntoon exterior and interior, as he oversaw the grounds as well. Our family were so fortunate to experience everything in and out of these magical grounds on a regular basis. I wish everyone had access to this amazing place as it is all one can imagine and so much more. Just incredible. Fishing on the rivers bend was so much fun and fruitful. Being there was just like a fairy tale. My father died in 86' and eventually the Hearst family stopped allowing access to anyone outside of family and close friends. We never got permission the visit after that. None the less... These are some of the most precious memories I have.

Didn't look that way at first, but Anne Flint dodged a major financial bullet when Hearst got control of the estate.

There was a large storm that blew a huge tree into the corner of the building. We pulled pieces of the old flooring and went to ( I believe) was Mission Tile in Santa Clara CA. They matched the color and the tex t use perfectly and Dad and I retiled the then repaired the fireplace that was also damaged. I was 16 or 17 at time but I remember meeting Hearst Jr. The property is definitely unique and it was nice to have seen it and work there.

Having only recently discovered this wonderful channel, I've been totally immersed in the fine detail and quality of your vids, Ken & crew!! Thank you so much for the always entertaining, very educational, and (for me) nostalgic and totally mind boggling glimpses into our American past. It just breaks my heart. I lived near Hearst Castle on the beautiful California coast for many years, and was introduced to the unequaled works of the great & legendary Julia Morgan through one of the original families that settled in Cambria in the 19th c. Wyntoon is one of my most beloved places on Earth!! May it be preserved forever, as a testament to architectural genius & artistry, like so many of the irreplaceable places that you feature.... much gratitude to you 💛🌹

I've been assigned to design a haunted mansion (interior and exterior) for an independent animated film. I don't get paid for it but it's a fun project that's also a big challenge. I love architecture but have never studied it, and your videos offer so much great documentation that is really inspiring and detailed. The homes in this segment just cry out for a production designer to emulate them lol. This particular video has been extremely inspiring. Thanks!

I have always been a believer of the little village concept. It's more manageable, realistic, impressive, flexible and characteristic as a residence. There's also something less desperate and sincere about them. They're more tasteful and not a bombastic statement of power, status and wealth. If you got it - flaunt it, right? Well, what if you've already done that and now desire a nice place to live that can oscillate between formal and casual?

While all of these are way too much house for me, I love the German Gothic style and fun details inside and out, on both the impressive original home, and the reincarnated 'village'. I prefer the "rustic charm" and castle esthetic over the gold-encrusted rooms of many of the New York mansions we've seen here. Thank you for featuring and giving a bit of background on the female architect. I've been to Bavaria, and she definitely absorbed the magic of the region, which informs her designs. Fortunately, McCloud, CA lies to the southeast of Mt.Shasta, away from the McKinney fire. I remind myself every day not to complain about the humidity here in San Diego. :0

I'm afraid Morgan's time in Germany was spent in vain, as the buildings she designed owe more to Cecile B. Demille and Hollywood than to anything in Bavaria. Charming and beautiful nonetheless !

Why call these buildings castles? They are not 'castles." There are no "castles" in America. When America was founded people were already tearing down castles in Europe. Please stop calling houses castles: simply because they are big. That'sso inappropriate and dumb.

As far as I know WR Hearst nor any of his friends referred to San Simeon as the Castle. It was “the ranch” or simply San Simeon. When it became a state run tourist attraction in the late fifties it was branded as “Hearst Castle”.
