The default position for the left hand is a straight wrist with the palm of the hand parallel to the neck with curved fingers. The reason you don't want a straight 4th finger is that it loses its strength, especially for slurring. Curved fingers are strong fingers. Of course you can't maintain this position all the time; there are lots and lots of exceptions.
