Very brief first thoughts: we need a language which makes sense to those who do not have a religious background or dislike religion for some reason, whether religion in general or specific religious expressions. Lately I've been reflecting on and utilizing Brené Brown's definition of spirituality: “Spirituality is recognizing and celebrating that we are all inextricably connected to each other by a power greater than all of us, and that our connection to that power and to one another is grounded in love and compassion. Practicing spirituality brings a sense of perspective, meaning, and purpose to our lives.” Recognizing that every person has that connection whether or not they are part of a faith community.

Interesting the first respondent employed the term “utilizes religious belief.” People don’t “use” beliefs. They believe beliefs and they live by them, including more conflicted, unclear and layered beliefs.
