in a way i think the west struggles with kawaii due to the punk and goth and emo and scene movements of the last 4 decades or so. the west can do dark and edgy very well, and the pastels and cuteness has been left over for the kids, who don’t need much really. there’s definitely more to it than this but i personally think this contributes to it a lot.

Imo its less that its "easier" for the west to do edgy stuff (although I agree with your point about it being seen as "for kids") its more that thats not whats popular right now. Celebrities play a BIG part in fashion trends here and you dont see a lot of kawaii clothing on celebs. The reason I think emo and scene got as big as they did is because of artists like Avril Lavigne and My Chemical Romance having as much main stream attention as they got.

100 percent! we're definitely getting better here (started getting into j-fashion in 2011 and there was absolutely n o t h i n g apart from possibly claires which is mostly aimed at kiddos) but we have a long way to go imo

at least we're getting a resurgence of brighter western aesthetics with Coquette and Dollette with some 90s combacks, though I guess Jfashion is inspiring a lot of people to get into feminine styles

I feel like cuteness in US is more bright colors and sharper lines, in German and Italian there is stuff that has similar Kawaii aesthetic but it's more expensive artisan goods. Cheap euro store items are worse than things that are cute in the US. But also a lot of what Kawaii comes from is more vintage Western goods-- so 70s and 80s pastel themes just with modern Japanese graphic design.

I second what another person said- Its E-girl and E-boy fashion in the US that the closest counterpart to this. Usually it is sharper lines, but not necessarily bright colour. In the US, it's more about colour contrast. The colours stand out from one another instead of blending nicely like pastels.

when you talked about characters, i was waiting for pareo to appear, i guess she have this type of style, aspecially her happiness shot outfit, with this unicorns decorated dress and her pastel hair. Its just so nice to have one my special interest is being in another one

I literally watched this video about 5 times! It's just so good. I wear fairy kei and I adore yumekawaii. But about the character segment tho I wanted to mention two more Pareo from Bandori and Hotaru Yura from Magia Record. I haven't played either game but both girls defiantly give off yumekawa vibes. Like when people try to do cuteness it’s messy and not cohesive sometimes… like when US artists try to make cute charms or resin items, they’re messy and just have generic cute things thrown on them… not even stuff that has to do with the design, just “cute” stuff on there because they’re small and “cute”

For me the best way to describe yume kawa is babyish. For me, it's how pastel it is. It's more pastel than other kawaii fashions yume kawa uses more specific pastel shades. For me, the feeling I get from it is very like, childlike and safety like you said it's very much little star twins. My personal kawaii style is very my melody and kuromi

I would say Yume Kawaii is a subculture of fairy kei. The difference is that fairy Kei is based off 80s and 90s cartoons and yume is more fairy tale based...I would appreciate if u could include more POC voices in ur next series....I'd love to ne included..im knowledgeable on lots of Jfashion styles
