Zero Touch Deployment is a way to remotely configure employee devices with your company’s protocols, programs, and settings.
Zero Touch automates the entire configuration, onboarding, and offboarding process through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) models -- freeing up IT and MSP teams to handle other tasks.
IT sets up the initial architecture, then from there deployment and provisioning happen automatically for new hires and new devices, without the need for IT to get directly involved.
It’s a lot different than traditional deployment, so let’s take a look side-by-side.
Traditional deployment requires IT teams to manually configure each device, then deliver it to the user. That means obtaining employee information, ordering machines or pulling them from storage, installing software and creating accounts, then configuring licensing for each user. After all that, IT has to make sure the user gets the device and logs on securely, followed by training and troubleshooting.
With Zero Touch Deployment, devices purchased through enterprise programs can be sent directly to the user enabled with Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) capabilities. The user simply signs online, which triggers their device to request Mobile Device Management or Enterprise Mobility Management. Then it receives the right user files, applications, and configuration settings automatically. Once set up, IT or MSP admins use remote tools for updates and troubleshooting.
Traditional deployment methods can take hours or even days per device - and it can only be done by someone on the IT team.
With Zero Touch, deployment only takes about fifteen minutes -- and it can be managed by HR and completed by the user on their own.
Now let’s look at the benefits of Zero Touch. You’ve probably already guessed the first one…
It saves time. A LOT of time. This gives IT and MSP teams time back to focus on urgent help desk issues and other tasks.
Zero touch configurations are standardized and centralized, reducing human error and the number of IT support tickets.
It also makes onboarding seamless. Laptops, tablets, and mobile devices are ready for the user right out of the box. Plus, IT has the ability to revoke or wipe devices remotely.
Security is enhanced, because all devices are automatically enrolled with the proper security protocols.
Zero Touch allows for unified device deployment that’s scalable and customizable for different teams. After the initial architecture is established, there’s no need for IT staff to set up individual devices.
So what would Zero Touch Deployment look like for your IT team?
One way to start your Zero Touch model is to use JumpCloud’s MDM capabilities. Our platform has a built in workflow for zero-touch enrollment for Mac OS in only three steps!
Android EMM is also included on the JumpCloud platform, and we have a lot of ways for IT admins to implement Zero Touch on Windows and Linux machines!
