The army always relied on the soldier that did not come for all meals, that's why the DMR was better! PAYD is set on the true calorific value and daily requirement. Of a diet from QRs. However you see the money come from your pocket now. As before it comes from your salary. Unfortunately it is privatised now. With strict guidelines from the top, even the recipes come from the top.. Enjoy. The ACC did Sustain. ✌️🇬🇧 All change.

Didn’t need a drink in the morning because of the pure grease you can squeeze out of the fried toast. Hash browns were always a treat. Protein choices were good but the beans were mystery grabs usually. Always go for cereal to skip the queue, sometimes a necessity in which case grab two bowls. And hypothetically if you’re sneaky enough you can jump on the end of the fry up queue and grab yourself some porridge

when i joined up in the 80s i loved all my Army meals, they seem better back then than they do today, my first day & first meal on a military establishment was at Sutton Coldfield army assessment centre, and the first meal was my lunch where they served us half a chicken and it slid across my plate almost falling off, and i shouted out aloud is this chicken still alive and everyone including the cooks burst out laughing, and for the 3 day everyone shouted the chicken is dead, but all the meals at Woolwich was lovely and every meal was cooked we had no salad or cold pasta dishes, breakfast was eat as much as you want as long as you were back for morning inspection at 8am, the amount we had the instructors encouraged us to eat a lot because we would be burning it off, same with lunch, but evening meal we could eat as little as we wanted if not feeling all that hungry as long as we stocked up the following morning, some lads decided not to eat a lot and suffered for it, passing out day they stood over us to make sure we ate plenty because of the parade in very hot weather, not once did i ever throw any of my meals away as i ate the lot, when i first started training i was very short and, but when i went home on sick leave a few weeks later my grandad turned round and said have they put you on a stretching wrack because i had shot up which i hadn't noticed, and i told him about all the food we was eating, but i did enjoy those meals in the cookhouse, didn't enjoy the ration packs as much though as in my day we had some of them come in tins and they were disgusting but we had to eat them, anyone who refused to eat them was put on a charge for disobeying an order and wilful neglect of our bodies and waste of food

Food in the military used to be amazing. This was pre pay as you dine. Now its mostly contractorised and the company have to make a profit so the core meal price is so cheap that you basically get rubbish. I remember having steak and shellfish bar once. It was the end of the month and they had money left over to spend...good times! This was early 90s

That's an OR mess hall not the WO's & Sgt's Mess. Same as most OR messes. Food is good and plentiful. Meanwhile in the WO's and Sgt's Mess is so much better due to increase in food and accomodation bills. Not sure how it works now, but in the day (80's-20's) it was a set price that was deducted. The meals at ATR Bassingbourne WO's and Sgt's Mess (late 90's) were always toper quality having "Nobby" (an ex ACC chef) being there. The meals where great.

They were introducing pay as you dine when I left and it was pretty controversial; that's a fair price for a cooked breakfast, you'd pay a lot more outside. Just going to add a bit about comparing it to when I was serving; to be honest, it looked OK, but the choices were pretty crap; no salad bar, no omelette bar. Who decides the menu's? There didn't seem to be many eating, which is a bit amazing for a training establishment. Are there any Army chefs left? In our day and to go back to when I lived in as a singly, the orderly officer and sergeant were present at meal times, the QM (who was ultimately responsible) would also show his face, my opinion - the standards and the choice was much better back when I was serving. I wonder how many guys are surviving on a Poptart and Cheap noodles back in the blocks. It's gone pretty much the way we feared it would all those years ago.

As a Singly in the Outer Hebs in 91to 92, we worked 12 miles from Benbecula camp on the ranges, as range safety boat. We had a boatshed with our Rib in, and we ate lunch in our mess room. Is it mandatory to always eat from the cook house whilst you are in barracks? Are you automatically deducted by end of month from your wages when you decide not to dine in the cook house.
