You could start anything you wanted today and by the time you were 21, you’d be pretty skilled at it. Edit: I'm gonna leave my original comment unchanged below, but I want to address how I feel now as an 18 year old. I've done a fair bit of growing up since I wrote the below passage, and with that my perspectives on what it is to be a young Dubliner have shifted considerably. If you're to judge this video just as a representation of teens you might find wandering about the city centre on any given day, then there's a lot less to fault about it. At the time of writing my original critique I really just didn't have a broad enough social circle to expand my insight farther than my own town, but as I got into the city more often that changed pretty drastically. I'm probably still biased as since 16 year old me wrote that comment I've gone from having none of my social circle being represented here to feeling like it captured almost all of it. Either way, Dublin is such a diverse city that they were never going to find everyone, but if you're just focusing on the city centre, they did a pretty decent job. Original comment: There are a lot of people in the comments defending this video by expressing the fact that there are teenagers similar to the ones seen in the video all around Dublin. I’m sure this is true, but the video is flawed in its failure to represent a broad enough sample of Dublin’s teenagers. The fact that I’m a sixteen-year-old Dubliner and I don’t know anyone similar to over 60% of the teens depicted here does show an issue with the video. It would be impossible to represent everyone equally here, so I respect the crew who made this for trying their best, but it fails to represent what being a sixteen-year-old in Dublin is truly like. They focused on a lot of subcultures, which is cool; I learnt about some groups which I hadn’t heard of before, but I shouldn’t really be learning from this video, I should be relating to it. Idk, that’s just how I feel.
@darraghclarke28844 жыл бұрын
Pink Freud my point was that I just don’t know many people like the ones seen in the video and thus it didn’t accurately depict the life of a sixteen-year-old Dubliner for me. I wouldn’t consider my area to be rural, and I’m quite familiar with Dublin and the people around me, so getting out more wouldn’t do it for me. Just because I don’t know those folks doesn’t make my teenage experience invalid or isolated. I was expressing my thoughts on the accuracy of the chosen demographics for the video. My opinion isn’t wrong or right, it’s just an opinion. It is completely natural and expected for a lot of people to agree and disagree with this video. I’m glad you know people like those because they seem cool and friendly, but I just don’t happen to.

I get that the creators are trying to include the “normal” kids (aka middle/ upper working class) but they should have had the sense to include at least one youngfella that actually has a Dublin accent. Lilianna B I mean it’s not so bad there are some places in the city where you can find diversity it’s just that Ireland was historically a poor country so there was really no precedent for people from abroad to move over here looking for a better life (usually the other way around actually)

@@ellamills5716 you're right....the diverseness of Ireland is due to the economy. Between the anchor babies of the late 90s and economic migrants ever since it had become diverse. Actual Irish people were never asked

I'm pretty ashamed at all of the negative comments on this video, some arguing these kids aren't normal, others saying they aren't anything special because they're just following modern trends to look hip and cool. Coming from an art's school background, although from an entirely different country, I can tell you that young teens are starting to discover all kinds of things about themselves at this age. Not only do these kids seem perfectly normal to me, but they seem quite happy being the way they are, and enjoying their taste for things, people and places like all teens should. It's basically the last pure part of life before becoming a grown up settles in and work stress and misery starts piling up. I don't get why in 2020 we still harbor such hatred towards children for being children. Let them grow at their own pace because you once were just like them, just wanting to have a good time without people telling you what think, like and how to act all the time. I think people being offended by these kids need to realize, we're not all alike and there's no such thing as "normal" in this day and age. People like what they like, and as long as there's mutual respect there shouldn't be any reason to get mad at such a sweet and harmless little video.

The title of the film is “what it’s like to be 16 in Dublin” and is being published by a “fashion and style” magazine. Tell me why all the comments are “not proper teens” “bunch of hippies”? Why would they include slobs in their trackies who you all consider “normal”? You all need to consider the demographic of the magazine. Nowhere did it say they were average or normal teens

This is most certainly not a reflection of Irish teenagers today, these kids are outliers to the Irish teen population, there are definitely big groups of these teens with similar interests but the majority of Irish teens talk look and behave nothing like this, these people are the kids you might see in temple bar spending their parents wages. Please, if you are representing our countries people to the world at least be honest and truthfully reflect our society. Them young lads from swords as your “working class” people, seriously? @SignorOca5 жыл бұрын
It'd be great if they actually used a more representative sample of 16 year olds as that'd give a genuine overall view of the youth in these respective cities. Instead the majority of the 16 year olds in each video are of the bohemian, artsy, unconventional and liberal type which are certainly not going to be a majority of these cities and all seem to have a similar thing to say.
@sliabhgealach5 жыл бұрын
Bruh all they're doing is talking about hanging out with friends, hobbies and messing about they just dress differently. They are representing the majority
@SignorOca5 жыл бұрын
chunky. jesus The very fact that these people dress differently does itself detract from the overall representativeness of the youth in those cities, they're quite clearly of a similar niche group/subcultures within those cities and as such what their hobbies are or what they do to mess around, as you've mentioned, will not be a good snapshot of the overall population. I live in a city in a western country and albeit I have seen people wear the similar stuff they do and have similar mindsets but I don't see it very often at all and they're the definite minority and as such they definitely don't give a clear indication of the youth in their respective areas which is a shame.
@sliabhgealach5 жыл бұрын
@@SignorOca it's not about their mind set it is about the activities they are doing like I said. The reason they go for people like this because it's more inspiring then a bunch of chavs drinking and standing outside a shop doing nothing and also because the channel is an alternative one so they're gonna look for people that suit their image. I do admit tho saying that this represents all 16 year olds is a bit of a stretch but if you look past their appearances and what their protesting for the general activities they are doing does represent them
@SignorOca5 жыл бұрын
chunky. jesus I appreciate that, I just think it's a shame because I don't see much of a difference between the videos. I'm very interested in other cultures so as such it would be really fascinating to see the differences between youth in varying countries but the issue with who they pick for their videos is that no matter what country it is, they wear similar outlandish things, they constantly talk about expressing themselves through clothing etc. This video was admittedly better as there were people playing Gaelic football which is a cultural activity endemic to Ireland but bar that, the videos become almost boring due to the lack of difference.
@sliabhgealach4 жыл бұрын
@@SignorOca that's true and i agree with you there. Seeing more people express their culture in this videos would be cool to see :))

these are normal teenagers. i'm 16 and i know a lot of people like this, i see a lot of people like this. they're not "cool" or "edgy". its just now we're in an age where people express themselves better through fashion and the things they do. they obviously got teenagers who have different interests so clearly theyre not all going to be "lads getting pissed". if you're an adult and saying this isn't nornal, stop gatekeeping lmao. they're teenagers, let them express themselves. all of these teenagers are normal. they all just have different ways to express themselves, so stop making fun of a girl dancing or a guy with a bowl cut. people can do what they want when they're this age, and they should be free. don't make fun of them. if you see teens like this as abnormal, accept the fact that there are people that arent like you.
