Hi Shea. That with "passato remoto" which is more used in the literature and in the south of Italy is an urban myth that also Italians are telling each other, but it's only partially true. It's more likely that in the north of Italy, people prefer to simplify these tenses by using only one form (e.g. the passato prossimo), whereas in the south the passato remoto is a bit overused. In Sicily even in an extreme way. However, passato prossimo e passato remoto have two different meanings and cannot be used reversely, even though this difference is more based on the perception of time and on the effects of the actions on the present times, more than on the time distance. Example: "Giulio Cesare morì nel 44 a.C". Here the use of passato remoto means that Julius Caesar's death happened in the past and the effects of this event have no direct consequences on the present time, from the point of view of who is saying that sentence. On the other side, if I say: "il mio vicino di casa è morto un mese fa", in this case the use of passato prossimo indicates that the effects of this death still touch me, through existing connections between myself and that person and his death. If I say, "in gioventù hai fatto molti errori", I mean with passato prossimo that your mistakes when you were young somehow, from my point of view, are still influencing the present, whereas when I say "durante quell'esame facesti un grave errore", I want to point out about a mistake you did in a specific time frame, but this mistake is specific to that event and has any influence on the present, the effects are not persisting. It's a subtle difference, sometimes even based on different personal perceptions, but it's not possible to replace one tense with the other. Of course it's hard to catch it by foreigners. It derives from the ancient Greek, where similar past tenses existed to express how punctual was an action occurred in past, whether or not their effects are still influencing the current facts. You could see if Preply is accepting new English teachers. I’m glad you have had the opportunity to spend months at a language school in Italy. It’s a fantastic opportunity. I’m thinking of going to a language school in Italy but I could probably only go for 2 weeks. I went to a language school in France for 2 weeks and that was enough to significantly improve my French speaking. The French school did have placement tests and homework.

I've been to Italian courses in Italy this summer, two weeks total, and I've noticed the difference in myself! I had already a B2 level before attending. I've done two one week courses because I wanted to visit more than one city in the same holidays. I totally recommend it!!

Dialects are practically different languages, I can’t understand any Italian dialects at all, but I have learned some Bolognese words/slang. But as far as accents go, I’m better at understanding different accents now, though it can still be tough! 😊

In the North East (say Veneto or Friuli regions) almost nobody would ever use passato remoto (ex.feci, andai... I did, I went... they'd say I've done smth, I've gone...), but in Emilia-Romagna which is also in the north you can hear pretty frequently both tenses, using passato remoto when we talk about things that happened years ago. Don't know why the algorithm brought me here, but I like your story, I'm an uncle of 2 siblings who are studying abroad.

Thank you! Yes, you can. Language school is part time throughout the week, typically morning classes. Plus if you’re on a student visa in Italy, you are legally allowed to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week). Hope that helps! 😊

I only have my school as a reference and I’m not sure if there’s an age minimum? The youngest I’ve seen at my school is 16 but I’m sure you could email some schools to see? I don’t have recommendations because I don’t know any of the other schools well besides just my school in Bologna.

Hmm I’m not sure if I can provide guidance in the sense of moving for school, but if you’re looking for a change of lifestyle and scenery then yes! I’m not sure if you mean you would do an exchange or do the full academic program in Italy because you might also want to consider what it will be like getting a job after or what opportunities will be available to you! But as far as living in Italy in general, I really enjoy it 😊

Hello! Yes you will need a student visa if you want to study in Italy for more than 90 days. The visa lasts one year but when you are in Italy you can renew your permit to stay.

It’s about €5000 for a whole year, 20 hours of lessons a week, but I know some schools vary based on their programs.

Hey! I'm Italian! Anyway, the present perfect is structurally identical to " passato prossimo", but their usage is different; you'd use il passato prossimo to describe both finished and unfinished sentences. The present continuous in Italian is used the same way con il gerundio in italiano, to describe current situations

No. For example, "Ieri ho comprato il pane" in English is "I bought bread yesterday". That's the simple past not the present perfect. "I have bought bread every day for 3 years." is present perfect in English.
