Some comments about Mexican ethnicity and Asia-I have been teaching in Taiwan for years (mostly university, also cram schools and high schools)-mostly English as a Foreign Language and sometimes Spanish: 1) I’ve been asked “Why don’t you have an American name?” 2) I once copyedited something for a fellow professor in the military academy system. She felt bad about having to ask me for my US Passport after the editor of the journal she submitted it to demanded it. They hiccuped at my Spanish surname and wanted proof that I’m a native English speaker from an English-speaking country.

Thanks for this video. I was wondering what type of support you get from managers? Do you get regular one to ones with managers to discuss your progress and welfare?

In my experience it really depends on the actual school. Sometimes they are very supportive and other times there’s often issues because of culture and communication.

Can you talk about taxes?

It’s always best to talk to you tax accountant because everyone’s situation is different and expat taxes are complicated. I currently have to file both in the US and the country where I am teaching each year.

Right now there are some additional restrictions in certain parts of China, but it is not completely closed.

It has completely reopened and was open before but you had to quarantine on your way in. If you’re a licensed teacher, salaries are incredibly high right now since many foreigners left due to the frequent testing-which is no longer required.
