another great session brother, as an old retired GySgt that got to serve with Co B 4th Recon BN and then later with 1st Force, I love to see people who still teach leadership the way that it was in the old days, to lead you need to have both the mission and your people in the front of your brain, it isn't about you, its about your people and the mission. It’s not just special operations but all branches and all jobs. I was an Army Reserve MP and was lucky enough that every officer I had was prior enlisted, even my active duty component counterparts I mobilized alongside. I also have 4 younger cousins that were West Pointers, I made it clear to them that they were just a private that was paid better, that’s all. Also that when they got to their first platoon they were to shut up and listen to their platoon SGT for several months.

One thing I always tried to do when I was an instructor at TBS was teach the students when you leave here your gona have TL and squad leaders with potential of up to 4 deployments. Go in grab your leadership and say I know this, by the book, show me how you work. We will be a unit, a fluid team. Break my trust and fail me and I’ll then step In. I tried to always tell them to stay humble and learn from your guys. I hope some of it stuck, but I know once the other officer instructors (some) get their teeth in and tell them they are “gods” there’s not much you can do. The good rise above and are given respect. The bad plow through and demand it.

I was A Ssgt. And went to OCS. When I went to the team (Cav), I relied on my SFC, team and squad leaders. One of the most important people on my team was the FDC (Fire Direction Controller). He made us look good at the Division level. If you have great troops, let them do their job.

I was an Officer at 1st Recon and 4th Recon in the 80's (Yeah, I'm Trans, get over it). I NEVER took over a platoon w/o confiding in the Plt Sgt and letting him know I was learning from him. However, I did say I would evaluate all the intel and mission and solicit his and the team leaders recommendations, but as the leader make the final decision. That almost bit me in the butt at a river crossing at JOTC in Panama. Trust your SNCO's & NCO's. Any officer that doesn't is a fool. Love your vids Nick. Semper Fi.

@@JamesGordon-cw8yh The Marine Raiders were formed in 1942 and disbanded in 1944. MARSOC was formed in early 2006, with the Marine Special Operations Regiment, which was renamed to the Marine Raider Regiment in 2014, as an homage to the Raiders of WW2.

I cannot speak for everyone else in the Army, but my experience was that we officers were definitely inculcated with the idea that the NCOs are the backbone of the Army. When in SF, this was even more so. Our battalion and group commanders in SF ensured we knew to respect and rely on our NCOs. There are exceptions (always a couple of bad officers or bad NCOs), but that was a very small minority.

Nick, great topic as always. Loved the explanation and breakdown that you give to the interested followers that never served. I also love your personal breakdown that all military can relate to regardless of Branch. I have experience with ALL 3 ( LOL) types of officers in my ancient career. I have always been a, here for you, type guy. Military, family, and friends makes no difference. I'm ALWAYS that guy, sometimes to a fault. Lol. Anyway, thank you guys. As always, I appreciate your time and love the show. SEMPER FI

This might change the longer you are in, but so far (halfway through TBS) NCOs are given the utmost respect from everyone. At OCS all the priors are always better at everything, and the Sergeant Instructors there will literally blast you for hours about how the idea that you could ever lead enlisted Marines is ridiculous. That we non-prior officer candidates only went Officer because we don’t have the same dedication as enlisted and couldn’t handle boot camp. Now at TBS it’s different because there’s no one blasting you and we non priors have had more time to catch up. But our priors are still the most respected in our platoons and company guns and first sergeant are beloved by everyone.

Agree the team chief been to more schools then the new commander and might know JTAC and the people below the team chief . Commander has to listen to the chief as well that associates with the team members

I got 5 months till i ship out, my biggest goal is to go MARSOC, im signing an infantry contract right now so when i get to ITB, scouts ask the infantry men who wants to try out for FORECON or MARSOC…I wanna go Marine RECON to experience recon then become a corporal or SGT and go MARSOC (THOUGHTS ON THIS?)

Good luck brother! I was Army Airborne Infantry for 12 years with 3 long ass tours in Iraq. Great and horrible times. The best thing to me during this time was protecting and fighting beside my brothers and gaining a eye opening perspective on life in general. I take nothing for granted and I judge noone. Life is hard but its what you ultimately make of it! Go get it, take what you want and make it happen! Never quit!🙌🙌👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸✌✌✌

Just don't forget you signed up for the SUCK! Say goodbye to comfort and embrace the lifestyle of getting up everyday and getting after it. I suggest you sign an 03XX instead of signing a recon contract. If you fail a recon contract they'll make you a POG. But if you have an 03XX contract and volunteer for recon during ITB they'll just keep you as an 03 if you fail. MARSOC sends recruiters to infantry units all the time and you can try out for MARSOC in the fleet.
