“Winning is not a some time thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing…” ~ Excerpt from Vince Lombardi’s “What It Takes to Be #1” speech
Lombardi! Perhaps no single word in the English language communicates such strong visions of excellence, discipline, commitment, and of course, winning. The Lombardi philosophy transcends football! His powerful words capture the fundamentals of success in any sport, any business, any life, and any age.
Through this book and Vince Lombardi’s words, you can learn to apply the Lombardi philosophy to:
*Inspire repeatable success within your business, teams, and personal life.
*Promote teamwork, integrity, and mental toughness to produce winning results.
*Use the movie to open up your next sales meeting, leadership retreat, or team meeting, and get revved up to win
This remarkable gift book will bring Lombardi’s philosophy to life, like never before. With vintage photographs (some seen for the first time), great quotes, and nine inspirational chapters by Lombardi’s son, Vince Lombardi Jr,. that tie back to his father’s speech (Commitment, Discipline, Excellence, Mental Toughness, Habit, Faith, Passion, Results, and Truths).
What It Takes to Be Number One is a gift that will be treasured for years to come!

Lombardi was a man that built a player from the inside first then the outside. It doesn't matter what you run, it's how you run it. In today's wimped out society, he would be considered an Neanderthal, but they do call the ultimate trophy the Lombardi trophy.

I'm glad you (unlike everyone else) included the "Winning is not everything--the effort to win is" quote. Lombardi hated the "winning is the only thing quote" because it had been taken out of context. He was telling an interviewer about the attitude of the owners; NOT his own attitude. But unfortunately, that's the only Lombardi quote most people have ever heard. My favorite Lombardi quote is "It doesn't matter how many times you get knocked down. The only thing that matters is, how many times you get back up."
@horton12545
@horton12545 5 жыл бұрын
I am glad you explained that. I always had a problem with the winning is everything quote, as it could be used to justify a winning by any means attitude. Winning fair and square is the only way that matters. Anything less is unsatisfying because it doesn't prove anything.

There are good coaches. There are great coaches. Then there is the GOAT OF ALL COACHES. That is Vincent Thomas Lombardi. As the marvelous John Facenda Narrated. "A certain magic still lingers in the very name." Lombardi was the epitome of dedication and the ability to motivate others. To employ a simple basic style of football executed to perfection. There will never be another. As a coach. As a symbol. As an icon.

TommyC503 Pretty sure I'm correct on my statistics. They're in the record books. Even Noll had losing seasons as coach of the Steelers. Lombardi may have inherited a good side but he made them near unbeatable. He invented new plays and I can guarantee you that Noll was using the Power Sweep. Lombardi's name is on the trophy they hand to the world champions. If that doesn't make you the greatest of all time I don't know what does. I live in Australia, I'm fairly removed from the media fanfare of the NFL and as such I believe I can make a fairly reasonable assessment. Noll won 4 Super Bowls and 4 Divison titles. Lombardi won 2 Super Bowls and 6 NFL titles. He does NOT have a losing season to his name. Noll has several.

The man in high school, college and the pros was in 16 championship games his teams won 14 . His only losses were the colts and Johnny Unitas in 1958 OT game and 1960 game against Philly when the game ended and he was 9 yards away from scoring. With a little luck he could of won those two games and would of been undefeated in championship games 16-0 wow!

Does anyone know more about this one story about VL? In the mid-60's some players were starting to hire agents to help them get more money, and one GB player did that, and he and his agent went to see VL-- who was also the general manager-- about a big raise. VL just got up and said he will be back before long, leaving the player and agent in his office. After about a half hour he finally returned and said, "Alright-- you're hear to talk about a raise in salary for next season? Well, gentlemen, I'm not the one you need to see about this matter. You need to go talk to the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles."

When the Red Sox finally won the World Series, Patriots coach Bill Belichik invited manager Terry Francona to his office. The first thing Belichik told him was, "You're screwed." He meant that the "news" media (and others) would do everything in their power to bring Francona down. That is exactly what happened. One reason why Lombardi and Belichik were so successful was because the team owners had their backs. The Red Sox did NOT defend Terry Francona, and he was at a huge disadvantage because of MLB's guaranteed contracts. When Francona was fired, at the press conference he said, "I lost the clubhouse." That was the saddest thing I'd ever heard from any coach in any sport.

"Excellence must be pursued - it must be wooed with all of one's might and every effort that we have. Each day there is a new encounter. Each week there is a new challenge. In all of the display and in all of the noise and all of the glamour and all of the color and all of the excitement and all of the rings and all of the money, these are the things that only linger in the memory. But the spirit - the will to excel; the will to win, these are the things that endure." - -

I hate when they misquote the greats... the quote is "winning isn't everything, IT'S THE ONLY THING"
@Matthew-qy7op
@Matthew-qy7op 7 жыл бұрын
tr34pillager That's the misquote. The book "When Pride still mattered" talks about this. No one has a reference to that quote in order for it to be blamed on someone. Many have used that quote, though had Lombardi said it, no one ever ran with it than he. John Wayne once starred in a football film where he coached a fledgling Catholic university. In it, his daughter coined a phrase in which she said: "to Steve (her dad), (winning) it's not everything, it's the only thing." I forget the film and what it's called, but it stars John Wayne and Donna Reed, and though it's not a iconic film, it's a very unique story.

Depends on your definition of successful. Lombardi was a head coach for just 10 seasons, so lots of coaches have won more games and a couple have won more championships. His most impressive accomplishment was taking over awful teams and making them winners in his first season as coach. He did that twice.

Super Bowl VII, with Vince vs Don Shula, would have been a game for the ages. The NY Yankees bought teams with money, Vince Lombardi molded teams with all of the skills and principles he taught. Think of how many more Super Bowls he would have won--think of how today's blabbermouths on sports radio and tv would be still be discussing Vince and his winning formulas, because there wouldn't be the endless jive about bubble screens, wheel routes, zone blitzes and 50 other jive terminologies that have nothing to do with anything.
