Join me for our weekend adventure! Maintaining 38 acres is a lot of work. Is it worth it? Along the way I'll share how we keep both landscaped and wooded areas maintained, as well as some large garden landscaping ideas. Make sure to drop your suggestions in the comments for what to do with the plot of dirt in our fenced area as well!

I see I'm very late to the party but here's my 2 cents. I would build a covered pergola on that spot and put a large table and BBQ under it for the family and friends to gather for outdoor meals adding pots of flowers and herbs . And as far as your raised bed weed problem, I plant my beds and then cover the whole top with woodchips after. It looks beautiful, cuts back on watering and feeds my soil which feeds my plants. I have no weeds in my beds at all. In the off season after I bury my dead plant matter in my beds I cover the beds with black gardening plastic to protect the soil and keep the weeds out until the next season when I'm ready to plant again. This has worked brilliantly for me for the past 6 years.

I would put a dwarf orchard. You get the food, you can mulch it to prevent weeds and it would be visually pleasing. Good Luck.

This year, I just used thick straw on all my vegetable gardens. It suppresses weeds, cuts down on watering and looks nice. I use stock tanks in the middle of my veggie gardens and fill them with catmint and Russian Sage to draw the bees, and I pile straw and those flowers too, so I don’t have to water as much. This time of year, things grow so fast, property can become a jungle and there’s so much trimming, burning, trimming, mulching, etc. It is definitely a lot of work!! As you get older, you learn more ways to simplify too. ☺️😉 You guys have a beautiful place!

Your gardens are lovely. A nice mix of veggies and flowers. What about creating a secret garden in that newly tilled space? You could create a border of shrubs, some beautiful perennial plantings and a nice seating area for relaxation. Maybe a few streets in the the corners and center. It would be a lot of fun and a project you can work on over the years.

Weed mat is the ultimate weed barrier. It is much heavier duty than landscape fabric. It really does the job in our traditional style vegetable garden! We're planning on putting some raised beds in our vegetable garden this year and will be using hay and grass clippings to mulch around the plants in the raised beds. My husband has farmed all his life, my FIL is an avid gardener and neither of them like landscape fabric! It just doesn't do the job well enough. Also the weed mat is reusable! We sweep it off, clean it up and roll it to store in the barn for the winter. In the bare spot, a cute potting shed/green house/stock tank pool/rock garden are all cute ideas. A rock garden with a sitting area would be lovely if you like sitting out with your plants and enjoying their beauty. I love your property. We have a 40 acre property as well. We utilize most of it by raising meat goats. Take care and have a wonderful summer, Sarah!

To slow down the weeds, cardboard... remove the top 3 or 4 inches of soil, add layers of cardboard, add compost and more soil on top of it. It should last 6 months, and it would to easier to weed. Some ppl meditate, I pull weeds. My nemesis is the Sedge grass.

@@GraceInMySpace repeat every time you clear a bed and plant a new crop... weeds have an ideal size to be plucked... it is easy for me to hand weed, with 3 small beds. Now 38 acres... yikes! I'd accept some level of weeds, and would try to get rid of them before they set seed.

What about building a small greenhouse in the tilled space?? I wish I had the space & the green thumb to have multiple garden beds for veggies. Last year I pruned my hydrangeas too much & got no blooms this year. 😔 I love what you did with the clematis & will take inspiration from that for my own yard. I wish you luck on the weed control, they are the bane of my existence. Lovely property. 😍

The area that was just tilled could be used for perennial plants like asparagus, strawberries, berries. I think the secret to keep on top of the weeds is not allow them to go to seed. Being diligent about it will in the long run make it so much easier to maintain. You have a beautiful place, I enjoyed your tour.

Your property is gorgeous! You may want to create a garden room in the newly tilled space. It would be a delightful destination for a seating area with perhaps a path to it. Anchor the space with understory trees and shrubs that would envelope you in a cozy way. Think focal point also. I can see it. Can you? 😍

I could come and be your gardener, landscape maintenance person, but I'm not cheap! LOL Everything looks great, Remember, the more you TILL the ground, the more weed seeds you will get........ and will fight weeding more. Try hand pulling instead, less disturbance.

cheap tongs, pair of sponge paint brushes taped onto them on the inside, cup of RoundUp and just treat any random weeds that pop up in your raised beds with a little pinch-stroke of the sponges to apply the material. There's no over-spray or drift when you use direct wicking application and anybody that tells you that the RoundUp will spread from a weed to a crop plant through the roots needs to have their driver's license taken away because they clearly don't even know what roads are. Use a drop cloth under the bushes, seriously.

Tilling does bring up dormant seeds (weeds). I would suggest using Preen. Nothing is going to take care of all the weeds, but it helps. I can see a lovely garden shed in the area you were asking about! Beautiful property!
