Happy to follow your journey and grateful for all the insights you've both shared about your new life in Russia and what it takes to live and thrive there. God bless you and your lovely family 🙏✝️🙏 Edited/updated: A final thought, that I decided to update my reply with. I wanted to say, that you both are doing a great job of modeling what I see is a Biblical relationship of a husband and wife and father and mother. The apostle Paul speaks about working with our hands and seeking to live quietly and striving to be self sufficient. Your work as farmers is a great example of what Paul speaks of. I will add that I so appreciate that both of you do your part as I see God intended. The husband works hard, is highly skilled and industrious, seeks to protect his family, is strategic in his decisions in how best to provide for them and protect them. The wife and mother is a rock that teaches the children, is a dedicated master homemaker, and is a vital part of a God fearing home. May God bless you both. You are a great example 🙏✝️🙏: Proverbs 31:10-31 ESV [10] An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. [11] The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. [12] She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. [13] She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. [14] She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. [15] She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. [16] She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. [17] She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. [18] She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. [19] She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. [20] She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. [21] She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. [22] She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. [23] Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. [24] She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. [25] Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. [26] She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. [27] She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. [28] Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: [29] “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” [30] Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. [31] Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

I was homeschooled in the states. We had other families to network with, to teach harder subjects, and to be friends with. In Russia, you can see that the school system produces good people and is the basis by which Russia is a promising country. Putting your kids in a Russian school is a great opportunity for your children to understand what it means to be Russian, to learn the Russian language, and to receive a good quality academic education that will only serve them in the future. They will be able to teach you probably ! Trust me, our family received the “socialization” lecture from random people all the time. Thing is, we got to socialize with the right people (other homeschool families). In Russia, the situation is different, and regular schools offer a great opportunity for your children. It is certainly something worth considering.

@@CountrysideCorner2008, I have bad news for you - "wrong" kids are everywhere, at every age and in Russia as well. :) So, I guess the sooner your kids learn how to deal with bad things the better (easier?) their grown lives will be (and probably this is why Russians sometimes called "persistent" and "strong-willed"?). I think I understand your concern because my kids are not fighters/bullies and they were bullied and beaten a bit at some moment, yes, but since it is not considered normal in Russia those "wrong" kids with help of other kids parents, teaches and officials were more or less "pacified" (but we switched schools later anyway, for different reasons) + my kids learned and still learn how to behave among other people who are nobody to you, how to make friends, how to protect themselves and not to get "at wrong place at wrong time". Socialization also means ability to recognize fraud and cheating because some kids practice that, they also learn how to stay away from that. So, if you want to integrate into society you need to know how society works, what are those non-spoken rules and stuff like that and all those things are being adopted on sub-conscience level in childhood at public schools/kindergartens. Socialization means everything in Russia ("our/their" paradigm or a kind of tribalism) and if you are going to be here as detached "consumers" of Russia - your life here will be problematic.

With all due respect, while I highly respect your beliefs and motivations, as a former professor of English immersion in a French-speaking country constant exposure to a language such as that in a school is essential to children mastering another language and becoming entirely bilingual, particularly as young age. Things become much more challenging after age 6 or 7 as far as language acquisition is concerned. Our little 4 year old Goes to school in French, but completely understands his mother in Armenian and expresses himself in English. We practice the one-parent one language technique. He also understands Russian, and I have tutored him in Italian, German, and Spanish, I guess, what I am trying to say is that Russian education is much different from that of Western education, and the same noxious influences are absent. You are, of course, free to make the decisions as you see fit for your children, but you moved away from morally bankrupt Canada for the sake of your children and their future, so it is also important that you weigh the pros and cons of educating them in the public school system as well. Most people are offering well-meaning advice. We too moved away from the US to seek a better, saner, healthier life.

Homeschooling is a good opportunity when public schools rather indoctrinate and spoil you children than actually educate them, which is definitely true for Canada, USA and most of the Western Europe. This is not true for Russia though. Russian kindergartens and schools are different, they are like "old-school", they promote family values, hard working lifestyle and patriotism. And also they help to socialize your kids within their new environment, which homeschooling can't provide by default: you can make them "good Christians" or "good Canadians", but you can't make them "good Russians" at the same time. I strongly suggest you consider sending your kids to local schools, it will help them a lot in their future life in Russia.

Take a look at Russian public school curriculum, I'm sure you will be shocked by its intensity. In order to teach you have to be a teacher! It is all fine to do it at home when you are learning language (English), maybe history, or any other liberal arts. Tell you self, honestly, what are you going to do about Russian language, as you know it is incredibly complex and you haven't even touched the Russian grammar yet. What are you going to do when time comes to learn science - Chemistry, Physics, Algebra, Geometry etc. How would you rate your own performance as a teacher in any of those subjects? How are they going to get exposed to Russian culture? Please understand, we are not as apologetic as Canadians and you can get that "tough skin" only by interaction with natives and home schooling will never ever offer it. How competitive do you want your kids to be in their future lives? Do you want them to go to University? You can teach them how to weld, attend to life stock, but for God's and your children's sake let them go to public school. I understand why you want to homeschool. I worked as an academic advisor in one of the US universities and from experience I can tell you, yes, Universities in the US and Canada do offer what we call prerequisites, if you don't know algebra or trigonometry we will enroll a student into an appropriate class, this is true for any other science. However, Russian kids learn all these in school and student has zero chance to pass University entrance exam not knowing it. Trust me, this is not a laughing matter, send you kid to public school.

@@CountrysideCorner2008 in order to under or over estimate one must lack a first hand experience. I immigrated to the USA 30 years ago. Five years after that I decided to get me a couple of degrees in Computer Science and Physics. Having a college behind my belt I thought it will be nothing to it. Imagine my surprise when I was seating in a physics lecture fully capable to do any mathematics they through at me and not understanding a single terminology. Same was for English, Chemistry etc. ,etc. For five years I slept 4 hours a day working full time and never forget to spend time with my son. Now about over estimation - to become a teacher in Russia they have to go through 5 years of University, the final degree is equivalent to a masters here in the West and they teach those student to be a teacher (!). My wife is one of those teachers and when Board of Education in Chicago evaluated her education they awarded her three Masters in Chemistry, Biology an Zoology. No one can tell how to raise your kids. However, allow me to look at it from a distance of 30 years going through it in different capacities, from an immigrant who didn't speak any English to a student, to an academic advisor and to a software engineer. Education is a key to success, period. It is impossible to argue. When kids in Russia want to become a doctor, architect, pilot, police officer, or to choose any other profession which will require a higher education they will fall back on what they learned during their school years to pass the entrance exam and in most cases they will never tell their home schooling parent that they are failing because of over and under estimation on parents part. You do you bud. Just remember there is a very good Russian proverb

(Post Scriptum).

Get contact with John Kopiski Englishman. He began a new life in the vast Russian wilderness. For the past 20 years, he, his wife and their five children have been breeding cows, making cheeses and other produce. And life has never been better!
