holy smoke... that's a lot of prepare work ahead of the sailing.
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
Yes, quite a bit. And it's mostly fully prepped too.
@rnkim25643 жыл бұрын
this was awesome. during all that prep that was so nice of you to hold the camera at the same time you were doing all those tasks. such an awesome day to sail. watched live stream on 5g and learned you also have this channel... so interested in your solar setup and how you want to do desalination. isnt this just a simple distilled process after or before filtering? I live up north right by the beach, am a prepper too and am considering fog retrieval systems and distilling just in case along with rain barrel collection

In my youth I worked one summer at Hood Sailmakers in Marblehead, Mass. Cutting and sewing mylar/kevlar sails

Very cool! Most of it is done by machine now I think
@lalaland9623 жыл бұрын
Daggone! Do most people take someone else with them to help with all that prep? If I wasn't be going to be out for hours and hours, I don't think I'd go through all that. Sure does look pleasurable, though.

I showed this video to make people understand it's not so simple. Plus all the skills required on the water. But that's also part of the enjoyment. Just like a farmer planting seeds and watching the harvest in the fall. Then there's the constant boat maintenance...

If they're helping to sail they're crew. If they're just hanging out jawboning they're just passengers.

Rob can you single hand your boat? And if I wanted to learn to sail, could I learn on a boat that size or would it be better to learn on like a 22 ft Catalina or ??
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
I'm a skilled sailor so I can single hand this easily. I will make a single handed video. However, there's a lot to be aware of. It's better to start off with a smaller boat first

Do you need/ would it be good to cover electronic circuit boards which are on a sea vessel with say a non conductive polyurethane or grease? People who do overclocking on PC hardware cover their electronics up to protect them from condensation and moisture - isn't it more likely to get stuff wet on a boat? Would there be any downsides?
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
We cover battery circuits with the special grease. I haven't seen that done on IC boards
@HiroNguy3 жыл бұрын
@@robbraxmansailing One of the other sailing channels I watch had an episode about a laptop dying from salt water vapor corrosion. What can be done though?
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
Keep it from getting wet? Or I'd say use a waterproof tablet as a backup at least
@HiroNguy3 жыл бұрын
@@robbraxmansailing They were using it to edit during passages and it was the bit of salt actually in the air that seemed to affect it. I'd say that taking the covers off and douching it out with a nylon brush and isopropanol might be the best prevention, albeit a PIA.
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
which channel was this? Perhaps I should subscribe.

Give Hunter some credit, their price point allowed A LOT of people to get into sailing.
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
Sorry. Just that where I am, certain new boaters gravitate towards certain boats and never learn proper seamanship. They bought a condo with a washing machine
@lyfandeth3 жыл бұрын
@@robbraxmansailing I can certainly appreciate that! Dufour was off the US market for 20? years, but it looks like they've come back with a nice product now. I'd offer to bring the beer, but but you're on the wrong coast for me right now.
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
Long long time ago, I took ASA sailing courses for the ocean and the instructor warned me not to get a Hunter...So by implication, if someone takes a sailing course before buying a boat, it will probably not be a Hunter. LOL.
@lyfandeth3 жыл бұрын
@@robbraxmansailing Yes, when Hunter's boss lost the keel on his new personal boat Thursday's Child en route to a major race, a lot of us made a note about Hunter. But was what, back in the 80386 days? Hunter has outlived Pearson, O'Day, Sabre, a lot of "better" boats over the years.
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
Actually they went bankrupt in 2012...too bad. Only Catalina is making production boats. The rest like Tartan and Pacific Seacraft are doing a miniscule volume.
@lechsiz16423 жыл бұрын
all of the screens/gadgets make me nervous. Seems like those are likely to fail or break. i prefer stove top coffee drips and pressure cookers over coffee makers and rice-cookers for the same reason.
@robbraxmansailing3 жыл бұрын
I guess the reality is I don't need any gadget. But it's awfully convenient. The boat will still run normally if all gadgets were off. However it would be very difficult to single hand
