My grandfather worked for AT&T & was given a security clearance to help with wiring the Greenbriar bunker. He never discussed it since he took an oath of secrecy & the project was classified as Top Secret until the bunker was officially declassified. Once he could talk about it he told us how there was a switchboard for incoming calls where an operator answered the calls a certain way depending on which line lit up. One line would be answered as AT&T, another line would be answered as Greenbriar Hotel, ect. all while being operated from the same operator & switchboard. My dad told me how he accompanied my grandfather on a different occasion to a job site where he needed to pick something up. There was a building the size of a shed room at the edge of a field that the went into. They descended down a spiral staircase & at the bottom was a larger area in which there was a pretty large blast door that was opened & led down a long hallway. He had to stay there at the doors while my grandfather went & did whatever it was that he needed to do. So there are a lot of places in which things aren't what they appear to be! I can only imagine what's out there now with all of the technology we currently have.

I wonder if people ordering the building of these bunkers deep down know they are useless big coffins that will prolong their agony, but spend the money anyways to feel like they really have an alternative in case stupid confrontations hit the fan and things go nuclear (in some cases thanks to their own actions). There is no way you are going to survive living in a post-atomic warfare world unless you are previously a die-hard fan of outdoor living with minimum items. Because that's the kind of future you are going to be living in once you open the bunker again, most probably (and if you manage to do that instead of dying there like a rat).

it’s not dying in a hole with a bunch of cowards in ensuring that the united states of america lives on, even if that means leaving your family and kids. you think anyone would want to do that? it’s not an easy choice to leave everything behind and start a new life in a concrete bunker. but our families are non essential personnel and we need only people who really matter, people that have an essential job and does it without hesitation and question. and it’s not like a bunch of rich white guys are going into these bunkers only the president, vice president, and a few congressmen, along with pentagon and essential army, airforce, and navy personnel will be given access. but you obviously aren’t understanding the bigger picture

There’s a good chance most people wouldn’t go to the bunker that are allowed in or that they’d try to bring their families and upon refusal of entry would most likely not go down willingly. For these super bunkers to work they need to include room for family members for them to be effective. Even with anti depressants I don’t imagine you’d be very mentally fit if your children and wife just died in a nuclear holocaust.

They were afraid there wasn't a company capable of building a three-story city in the core of a mountain? Are you serious? That is half of every James Bond movie since the early 1960s, so yeah, several companies have tried to make that a reality.

I doubt in the event of a nuclear attack that their would be enough time to get anyone to the bunkers. Our government doesn't handle disasters well, example: Hurricane Katrina. What's likely to happen is that we will all be vaporized and the bunkers will be empty and covered in dust. I think the whole duck and cover commercials during the cold war was stupid, teaching kids that they can survive a nuclear attack by hiding under a table or blanket. Should've taught them to put their heads between their knees and kiss their ass goodbye.

In my US public grammar school 1970s we still had regular "civil defense" drills where we had to file out of class & sit in the hallway facing the wall crouched over with hands over our necks. As I recall that practice ended after 3rd grade, & I think most of us kids knew silly, but didn't mind as somewhat entertaining :-)

True, it really won't help. I think they just did those drills because they were young kids and it wouldn't have been a good idea to tell them that nothing they do is going to work because they're going to die either way. I think that's also why they stop the drills as you get older

Am I the only one wondering why they weren’t able to bring their families to the first bunker? During the time that this would have been in use, women were far and few holding high government positions. If they did survive and continued to live, wouldn’t they want women/children to live rebuild and continue America? I mean it would die out with only men once the rest of the country is gone.

See . . . .you thought it through and came to the logical conclusion. . . .they didnt. One imagines that there would have been much glitter and cries of "YAAASSSSSSSS BITCHES, WE ARE BACK" as the bunker was opened a few years later . . . . .
