Daily driving VWs since 1979. I would recommend 3 things. Electronic ignition my pertronix has lasted 15 years so far. Svda distributor which is similar to stock if not the same. you will not have a flat spot when set correctly. some have gotten lucky with the 009 but that dissy was designed for drag racing in the 60s with big dual carbs. Vac advance will give much better economy on the freeway and more torque on hills especially with the stock carb. A real 34 pict 3 Solex. 3rd, sway bars. They will help weather you lower ur bus or not. I am lowering my bus to about the same height as old man and a bus, (Hes on youtube) but I have thicker sway bars and the bus handles like a slot car. I live in a hilly ish area, and these 3 helped the most. My only advice is dont listen to the people that are selling anything get the opinion of the user. These arent Hondas so maintenance is crucial! coming up on 100,000 miles in the 70. 88 miles away. Cool Westy!! Have fun!!

3k for that beautiful bus that wasn’t Swiss cheese was a steal!! I hope to find myself a deal like that. The question was, was there a better option for a car…..the answer is HECK NO. Maintenance is easy on them and no computer chip garbage to deal with. VWs have so much history, style and respect they come with from that you get to drive history cruise in style and be respected anywhere you go. Weather it be any model. My DREAM VW is a beetle/bus though and I plan to daily mine as well if I ever get the opportunity to buy one. As far as speed no the stock engines weren’t built for speed but it’s not how fast you can get to your destination its about the journey experiences (good or bad) and people you might meet along the way. I hope to experience this myself someday. Hang on to that bus bro. Peace out and VW on!!

The trick with the VW Bus is love , you have to love them , they are not fast they are not the most reliable vehicle out there , they are simple if you take care of them they can be surprisingly reliable , a few upgrades are smart for long trips , a thermostatically controlled axillary oil cooler is smart , convert to alternator , hydraulic lifters , really change the maintenance schedule , make the engine much quieter, if you go for a big bore engine , the 1.8 is the best , for longevity , also better torque , mate it to a freeway flyer trans. & you will do much better on the freeway , 70 to 75 , before you travel at these speeds however , first go through the front end & install sway away , anti sway bars on the front & rear , most of all just have fun & love your bus , haul all your friends around , or your girl friend , have a great time , don’t do drugs !

Hey so I have a 1970 VW TYPE 2. I love it! But my clutch has gone bad twice in 3 months and i am not hard on it nor do I red it at all. Is this an issue you have faced too??
@jakeandcameron70225 ай бұрын
Is your clutch maladjusted? When you press down the clutch how far down does it go before the clutch engages. I like to set mine so it engages when the pedal is half way down. Or if it grinds when the clutch is fully pressed it could be the pilot bearing. I’ve ran into that issue, it tore up the clutch pretty quickly

THINGS TO KNOW about driving a Classic VW as a daily driver......THEY DONT EXPECT TO SEE YOU DRIVING SO SLOW.......Rear end accidents are common when climbing hills. Best to put a bigger engine and taller gear trans in there before your the next victim.

Or put a warning sticker, some will listen some won’t. But better then nothing

Yeah, I’ve thought about it. But the general consensus that I get from the bus gurus at the Shasta snow trip is that you can’t beat the reliability of a stock setup.

I want a vw van which one should I get for a daily drive ?

A eurovan or vanagon would probably be the most comfortable daily driver, I chose a bay window because it was generally cheaper and I prefer the type 1 engine.

@@jakeandcameron7022 - My parents bought a 68 back in 69. When we moved to St. Louis, that winter, I had to stand in the front with a squeegee/scraper and keep the inside of the windscreen clean. All it took was one winter of that, my mom got a car. Then I remember camping in it in 1975 and it got really cold. When we left the campground, my sister and I were in our sleeping bags and my parents were all bundled up while driving. It took like an hour to get heat. Then my dad put a Porsche 911 engine in it in 1977. Solved the heat and power issues. No more crawling up hills and in 10 minutes, it’ll burn you out of it. I now have it and still drive it.

If you are curious, I have the original bill of sale when it was new (sold 6/30/68). Care to guess the price of it back then?
