I got my kids Rock Band 2 for Christmas the year it came out. They played it for a while, then moved on to other games. I got behind the drum kit and was instantly hooked. So much so that I now play real drums. Even funnier is that I wrote an Android app that mimics the "note scroll" in RB for drums; this is still how I learn to play new songs on my acoustic kit. I "chart" a new song using the Reaper app with the Custom RB3 template, export it to a midi file, and my Android app reads this midi file. It syncs it to the mp3 of the original song and the notes scroll by as the song plays just like the RB game. It really helps with the muscle memory when learning a new groove. I can even set specific start and end points in a song and it will loop. I'm an old guy (mid 50s) and would have never started playing drums without RB. And playing drums in a band with other musicians is easily the most fun I ever had. Sounds corny, but playing in a band is pure joy. Never would have happened if it weren't for RB.
@GarryFunk6 жыл бұрын
Hello Paul, I also got hooked on playing the drums this way. I now use a v-drums kit hooked up to RB3 and play all the time. Would you share your experience with the Android app you wrote? It sounds like just the thing I'm looking for.
@vhayne917776 жыл бұрын
Yes, please elaborate more on how you're doing this. I started playing RB4 drums a couple of years ago and loved it so much that I purchased a Roland V-drum setup. I don't know how to connect it to the game, so I just let the game run on the song, and I play the drums along with it. But I'd love to have another option like you have been doing. :)
@GarryFunk6 жыл бұрын
Oops, checked deeper and it looks like the Legacy Game Controller Adapter only allows use with wireless devices. Sorry, this is a real drummer bummer!
@kenzubeck43336 жыл бұрын
I need a "note scroll app"! I played a little drums before RB but once I was hooked on RB drum I had to have a real kit. I owned an acoustic set for a number of years after that and I have just recently moved on to a new set of e-drums. So far I've only really just jammed along to songs that I like on KZbin. A note scroll set up would really push me forwards faster into learning new songs!
@paulstewart22976 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, my Android app is really quite a bit away from being ready for prime time. The biggest issue is exactly the issue that RB content creators have to deal with: "charting" the song. I actually use the same tools that RB3 content creators use, which is mainly the Reaper Digital Audio Workstation app for Windows. Someone (possibly Harmonix) created a project template that makes it "easier" to plop down the different instrument notes for a particular song, but it still takes me a couple hours to "chart" a song. And it isn't enough to just add notes. You first have to go through the whole song and adjust where each measure starts and ends. This will be somewhat easy when the song was originally recorded with the musicians (or at least the drummer) was playing along with a click track. But especially on older stuff, the songs tempo is all over the place. So charting a song is pretty difficult, and me actually sharing songs that I've charted for myself would likely lead to all sorts of legal issues. If there was a way to "feed" a song to some sort of app that could pick out the different instruments on a drum kit, then it would make sense to release my app. But I think it's safe to say that there really isn't a reliable way to automate the song charting process. What might make more sense is to do something that apps like Ultimate Guitar does, but with RB-style note presentation. I'm talking about how in Ultimate Guitar you can load drum tabs/sheet music for a song and have it play the midi-instrument version of the song. I'm sure it would be annoying as hell to play along with midi instruments, but if your goal is to learn a song it might be worth it.

I'm so thankful for Rock Band. Before that series, outside of clarinet ( which I was bad at ), I had no musical talent. I remember when I first started Rock Band, I had no rhythm. I've been in a few different bands, released an album earlier this year, and even played with Anti-Flag two weeks ago. I don't think I'd be a musician if those games hadn't inspired me.

Guitar Hero died because Activision forced Neversoft to release way too many games in a short amount of time which over saturated the market. The reason why GH Live didn't do well is because it was a passionless cash grab. Neversoft made guitar so amazing because of the genuine love and passion they put into the series. Rock Band isn't dead yet. The future doesn't look good for it but I can't see Harmonix letting go of it that easily. They love Rock Band as much as Neversoft loved Guitar Hero. They comunity has now flocked to a fan-made game called "Clone Hero" which is the perfect Rock Band/ Guitar Hero game. Considering you can even make and download your own songs for it, I think the community is gonna live on for a while. Also DJ Hero was fucking fantastic.

I think it was the price of the peripherals. you can get any of the games for under 5 bucks but even finding the controllers to play with is incredibly difficult, and usually when you find them they're super expensive, at least as far as games go. So the cost and lack of supply makes it impossible for new players to get into it.

Vault420 No it's not, first off your DLC from the last RB carries over, then on top of that they have to pay for the licenses, so they give the game some base songs and you pay what you want for them instead of 120+ dollars for the base game unless that's what you want.

I had some friends over recently to play Rock Band and let me tell you, that experience is still as great as it was back in the day. But despite RB4 being available with just the guitar, it is nigh impossible to find a working drumset for certain consoles without shelling out huge bucks on eBay. Regarding the video, I think all of that is all true, combined with how often the hardware (especially drums) sadly falls apart, and of course takes up space (it's substantial!). Combine that with a serious lack of forward compatibility in new consoles... I'm sad that Rock Band 4 failed to ever be released on PC, because I think there would be a certain compatibility there that would help drive forward consumer trust. There might be some argument that people are more interested in online play than actually interacting in person, too, but I think there will always be a steady contingent of college kids sharing apartments that could use a set.

Why do think the last one was in 2014? A: it wasn't that popular B: most of the songs are locked behind micro-transactions.
@Script3dR3ality6 жыл бұрын
Micah Miranda It was pretty damn popular for people who A. Play guitar already. or B. Were desperate to learn how. It satisfied both niches pretty well...it's fun. Also, you need to get the PC/mac version, then you can download/unlock thousands of custom DLC songs for free. There's an entire community dedicated to it. I created a few songs myself, and even wrote blog posts teaching others how to do the same...you can download pretty much any song you could imagine. As for why the last one was in 2014...it was basically revolutionary, nothing else like it existed. They might have even released a new one since then, I haven't followed it for awhile so I don't know, but they definitely will soon regardless...it's not going away haha. So...maybe reconsider?

What did it for me was the release of Rocksmith. As someone who played guitar before GH and RB, you can’t go back after playing a game with a real instrument. That Rocksmith is STILL releasing content despite not having updated the game in five years. That’s a good lifecycle to still have people purchase content.

Rex Erection Rock Band is just like Guitar Hero. Plastic guitar and 5 fret buttons. There are non-guitar players who learned how to play guitar on Rocksmith such as Audrey Shida. She was 6 when she started playing Rocksmith and now that she's 14, she's slaying each and every difficult songs to learn. She also learned how to play lefty in just under a year. Her little sister Kate (9 years old) plays the bass on the channel and does vocals as well (she can growl and scream) and can play guitar as well, and can get above 90% on Through The Fire and Flames(take note, on the real guitar). They both learned from the game.

I think you’re meaning Rocksmith. Yes it does help you learn guitar. It has mini games in it as well to help you better learn chords and techniques too. Get a decent electric guitar, such as squier start, and plug in. Really fun game, much easier to comprehend than using guitar tab pro or Yousician, cheaper too. Yousician will run about $120/yr.

My favorite Guitar Hero game was, & will always be, "Guitar Hero 3" - and my favorite tracks to play were "Black Magic Woman" and "Cult of Personality". GH3 had a short but fantastic, balanced playlist that kept me entertained for about a year straight! Because I played an actual guitar most of my life, these games were always a little difficult for me to pick up, and I know a few other musicians who had a similar experience. But once I was finally able to shake off the kind of "automatic muscle-memory" I ended up having a helluva lot of fun with the first three GH games. Then, almost over night, I just completely lost interest in it. When my toy "guitar" went on the fritz and I saw the price for a replacement (my first one had come bundled with GH 1 & 2) I said "no thanks" and oddly I never really thought of it again. Funny thing is that a few years ago a friend busted out Guitar Hero & a pair of guitars at a party, and I was TERRIBLE at it! Lol - for some reason I had been bragging about how great I was at GH, but when he busted it out I actually had a hard time even getting through an easy song on medium difficulty. Needless to say I put my foot squarely into my mouth and was ragged mercilessly (and rightfully so)! Lmao. But Guitar Hero was a lot of fun for a minute and I sank countless hours into that scrolling-buttoned madness.

I bought Beatles: Rock Band for my Wii back in 2009, and though I loved it, my ex-wife did not. So I could never have friends over to play. Years later we moved into a smaller house and I sold the game and peripherals. Last year, I mentioned the game to my Mom and she revealed that she had an unopened box off the Limited Edition Beatles: Rock Band set! She sent it to me and I have been loving it all over again. A friend bought me a copy of Rock Band so they could borrow everything themselves, and I've ended up buying one of the Track Packs and Rock Band 2 already. I don't see myself stopping. I wish the controllers worked with all the other games like Band Hero and Guitar Hero, but alas, they've got to have their propriety. If they took a page from Just Dance, I think this franchise could 'get the band back together' if they released a version that had all the previous songs available as online content/downloads and would just continue to upgrade with new content every year. Also, Blues Brothers: Rock Band would be awesome!

Rock Band was thriving when Rock Band Network was released on Rock Band 3 which allowed 3rd Party Creators to chart songs that they liked and not just what RockBand liked. But RB3 took a huge hit for removing Score Duel which was its competitive side. RB4 came and did away with all that AND Rock Band Network. Guitar Hero moved away from its successful game Guitar Hero 3 and followed Rock Band in adding drums and that ruined everything. I definitely think that Rocksmith filling in the gap between the last couple of releases between both franchises helped contribute to the failure of the most recent ones. Definitely not all people... I tried learning guitar before the first Guitar Hero came out, it was hard, cost me a lot of money (guitar + gears, lessons, chart - no real internet at this time -, and so on ), and require A LOT of practice, and I never get toa point where i feel confident enough to play in a band (if ever I could find one, and a place for repetition, a good schedule etc). So after 2 years, I stopped my efforts... Then Guitar Hero came out, there was for sure a learning curve (and real guitar didn't help me, as it is in fact pretty different) but it was instant fun, and the more I played, the better I became, and the more fun it was ! Then Rock Band came out and I was instantly addicted, now i could play with my wife and friends, it was great! It was good for me, even if I will never be on a real stage in front of reals peoples, I had fun, way more fun than I had when I was trying to play real guitar. So, it greatly depend on the person and the experience, for sure !

I bought Rock Band 4 and got fed up with shitty calibration settings and the shitty Mad Catz drums not registering my notes. That's probably the biggest reason why I quit playing. As I got to more difficult songs, I couldn't pass them because the drum kit just wouldn't register rapid notes well. And I promise it's not my skill as a player/drummer. On Rock Band 2, I 5-star'd every song on expert drums and gold star'd most of them except for a handful of the most difficult ones as well. Historically speaking, I've always had issues with Mad Catz peripherals providing underwhelming results and just being cheap (and yet not-so-cheap in the instance of RB4) product.

@@embrao maybe that's the issue, I was just using the default drum kit from launch. I had no problem hitting rapid notes in previous versions of the game, but for some reason this one wouldn't register. Even on series of notes that weren't rapid it would uncommonly drop notes.

If you step back a few years, you'll see that Karaoke Revolution (Harmonix partnered with Konami to bring this) was the *first* part of the whole thing, and Guitar Hero was just to introduce and iterate with the Guitar Controllers. Rock Band was *always* the end product goal - and this is where I think the Harmonix/Activision split began. I think the "high note" really happened when Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour launched. GH had their own kitchy band-centric games, Aerosmith, Metallica, and Van Halen (and honestly, I think they pulled the better of the set with these last two). Three things really led to the decline of the game: 1. MUSIC CELEBS PUSHING LAWSUITS. The two that come to mind is GnR suing over the inclusion of Slash in GH3, and Gwen Stefani having the impression she would only appear in the game to play *her* songs, and not "any song the player felt like playing." This led the companies involved to consider this kind of thing in the risks of creating more titles. 2. CHRISTMAS OF 2008. DJ Hero 2 dropped, along with GH 5, GH Smash Hits, GH Van Halen, *and* Band Hero. FIVE FUCKING GAMES INSIDE OF ONE MONTH!! If this wasn't blatant cashgrab sink-the-ship failure, I don't know what is. It's like they missed the entire countercultural point of rock music, just like Woodstock '99 did. 3. SYSTEM SHOCK. PS3 to PS4 and X360 to XBox One was *not* a smooth transition on any side of the fences, and the kind of data migration that came with it TOOK FOREVER - like literally rebuilding both setlists worth of content all over again - and with GH Live, even THAT didn't work because they changed the entire control scheme. I don't know of ANYONE that prefers the 6-button Black/White Fret System over the 5-button classic. Plus, at the time both games were shipped, the consoles *weren't* the $399 you see them for today, they were still *SIX HUNDRED FREAKING DOLLARS.* And that was BEFORE the +$200 for the game/guitar controller; because none of the HARDWARE remained compatible EITHER. Honestly, I still play my PS3 setup to this day; the only concern being the controllers. Those were always the gatekeepers to the game (and nearly 25 years of DDR is a testament to this issue) - and this was why Harmonix's first approach was gradual. Start with the base system in Frequency, add netplay support with Amplitude, then introduce the controllers one at a time so they aren't prepping the whole kit at once for a bulky lump sum. I probably enjoyed RB3 the most and wish more tracks had keyboard support (or at least the ability to flip-play Keyboard/Guitar Parts on the opposite controller)... but think that the series as a whole probably still peaked with RB2 and GHWT. After these, there was a noticable emphasis on making songs "more hard to play" than "more fun to play" and a good amount of chart direction/flow supports that.

My son LOVED it from day one. even at 15yrs old in 2022, he STILL plays Rock Band 4 for the PS4 to this day (Actually, he now plays it on the PS5) & I enjoy watching him play it. especially since he loves the classic songs from the 70s and 80s; Rush, Yes, Van Halen, etc. . We have purchased probably well over 400 additional DLC songs. And just last week, he wound up buying 5 songs from Megadeath. His interest in it comes and goes & there have been months where he doesn't touch it, but eventually he goes back. We even got the cymbals expansion set. He has enjoyed it so much that we even wound up getting some guitar Hero games (& equipment) off ebay for the Xbox360 around Jan 2022. The only issue I run into is the wear & tear of the equipment. We are on our 2nd drum set and 3 kick pedal. Its cheap plastic & replacement parts are INSANELY expensive on ebay these days. I am in the process of trying to repair a kick pedal instead of replacing. If the drums and/or cymbals go, not sure I would replace as they are well over $200 on ebay. I have looked into real electronic drum kits as a possible replacement, but we will see.

I bought GH Live for Xbone, and I was extremely underwhelmed with it. The frets kept sticking, the detour from the standard 5 fret layout made it difficult to get into the swing of things (since it was essentially learning a whole new control scheme, and not having the multicoloured notes to help accelerate identifying which fret to press). I remember sinking in hours upon hours of Warriors Of Rock, and even my dad got involved. But no such luck with GH Live... The equipment argument is annoying too, of course. Matt Wolf osu! is pretty big, not sure about the other rhythm games. Also, I don’t think you can consider Piano Tiles a rhythm game. You can play songs as fast or slow as you want and as long as things stay on screen, the game doesn’t care.

I think the reason they died was because people forgot that instruments were a thing and started talking really fast or going whoooooaaaa instead of singing and playing instruments. If you don’t know what I’m saying, I’m saying this: instruments are dead because new music is garbage and doesn’t use them.

It's sad that these games died but luckily clone hero is bringing them back!

My best friend and I are still playing rock band 4 pretty consistently. The devs keep releasing more songs, and it's a great game to just pass the time with. Especially considering I exclusively play the guitar, and my best friend plays the drums.

we'd need more than a miracle for these games to return, especially since music licenses are so hard to get now
