a lot of the issue with dogs socializing with other dogs is that a lot of owners are too nervous or scared of what may happen if their dog meets another dog.

disagree, had a dog perfectly socialized with dogs and humans but became dog aggressive at age three with no traumatic experience, blamed ourselves for quite awhile but eventually you figure out it is the dog..

@@sashaashby just like how we dont like everyone we meet our dogs wont like everyone they meet either. my dog was attacked by a few street dogs that i had to fight off. he still likes other dogs but now hates big fluffy ones. oddly enough he doesnt mind giant pitbulls and he is a shih tsu, besenji, yorkie, and a poodle.

@@sashaashbyI agree!! This way put entire onus on dog owner and it’s devestating when you’re compassionate and doing everything right. Poeple just like to judge. Until they be in the situation to which they’ll make every excuse why it’s ‘your’ fault still; it’s a vicious cycle. I hope you’re doing well and I hope you still have dog(s) and that you ended up with the right fit. :)

@@melphillips1608 100% agree, we lived a very different life with the dog who had aggression issues, he lived a good life and died at a good age, this time around we got some very mild mannered doodles and are appreciating every second : ) i do enjoy watching beckmans dog training videos - have learned so much how to handle the misbehaviors…

Brilliant and useful video Mark. I would scale my dog at between a number 2 and 3. He is not redirecting on me, and he is not confident that is for sure It is difficult to know what to do for the best and look forward to your future videos on the different stages you have mentioned. My dog and myself and completely calm before we go out, I practise the Trust Technique so that we are both relaxed at the front door before going out (no obedience involved). However I must be missing something because there is still a certain amount of reactivity. Difficult to gauge whether to give any leash pressure. My instinct at the moment is not to correct.

Thank you. Categorizing the types of reactivity is very helpful in understanding where my dog is at (was level 3, more often level 2). Understanding that I can't expect anything from them without showing them what I'm looking for (calmness) and how to communicate that makes so much sense. Watching your videos, focusing on my relationship with my dog, and not asking for obedience like sits and stays has really improved my dog and my life together. I also really appreciate you saying that this is not an overnight thing, and it's important to take it one step at a time. So many big KZbin dog trainers make it seem like it only takes five minutes to fix any and every dog, where for the majority of us, that will never be the case. Patience, calm, understanding, and respect. So much more valuable to us regular folk.

my dog seems to only react to certian dogs of certian personalities. he doesnt like dogs who try to stare him down or try to flex their stuff on him. unless the dog is trying some dominance stuff he pretty much just wants to play with other dogs. it also doesnt help that he is a medium sized dog who was attacked by off leash large dogs that i had to fight off. here in peru people allow their unsocialized dogs to just wonder freely in the city where they get in to fights with other dogs and scare people. i think with some dogs its a ¨get them before they get me¨. its usually with large dogs that look like huskies, malamutes, or german shepherds. today at the park he and another dog were both trying to butt sniff eachother but neither side wanted to give in. also didnt help that an aussie shepherd was trying to herd him and he turned and corrected it (not too bad) we left because of the high risk situation and this dog didnt just try to herd him it also tried to herd a pit who did the same thing.

You simply are amazing! This is the truth and also the solution to the problem a huge majority of dog owners are struggling with. I handle it exactly like you do. All my dogs have been able to pass other dogs off leash, no matter how the other dogs reacted. We have a lot of aggressive dogs around here. They can literally scream murder into my Akia's ear and she just doesn't care, does not spend them even a look. I'm calm and she trusts me that I'd handle the situation if needed. A tiny dog once got loose and bit my Akita in the leg. She could've killed it in a second but just looked at it firmly and the tiny one left, never barked at her again. As you say, other dogs feel that. Barely any dog even reacts to my Akita though they hate my young Shepherd. He got bitten from behind whoch made him a little insecure. He passes other dogs but can't help himself staring at them. I'm building up his confidence and trust until he's qhere he was before the attack. Almost there

Sometimes it’s also a health condition. I had my dog professionally trained and he was thoroughly socialized but that all changed after he hit 16 months. He became people and dog aggressive pretty much overnight. After more training and health testing it turned out that he had a thyroid issue. It gave him anxiety and irritability. He’s now on meds which eliminated people aggression (he’s fine w ppl just doesn’t want to be pet) but he still has dog aggression. Makes me sad because he used to be so friendly w other dogs. I’m fine with him not wanting to socialize anymore, I just need him not to react to other dogs now. It’s def a process…

I wouldn’t stress over your dog being social with lots of dogs. That puts most dogs under a lot of stress even when they don’t have a medical issue going on. Lots of times we don’t see the stress and then one day they blow up and takes forever to bring them back down because they feel they where never heard for years. Just because a dog looks happy to us humans does not mean the dog is happy. They will do what they think makes us happy even if it puts their own self in danger. And then a dog grows up and is no longer wanting to please because they grow into their own independence. Slow and steady and keep him away from dogs and you’ll watch he stops caring about the dogs.

Totally agree that owner must learn how to read his dog and learn what will work with the specific dog. What works for one owner and one dog, may not work with the personality of the next dog. SAME WITH PARENTING CHILDREN.

Thank you. This would be fantastic re (5 stages), making videos explaining different stages of reactivity. My GSD 13-month is confident, but when a dog barks at her, she reacts. When she does this, I let her bark until she looks at me, and then I can her her attention . Not sure what else to do?

The other 15% I bet you would have success if you put a little more time in. If I can get a dog to stop reacting in a week with the dog doing that for three years I take that as a win. Not always do the dogs stop in 15 minutes. That’s nice but sometimes a little time away from the owners you can see the real dog and why they do what they do.

@@markdubose1986 I think it's a bit different if a dog experienced trauma. An example is a dog from a rescue that was near killed by another dog, now fairly reactive, a balanced trainer worked with him to no avail. It took me a few days before he would even work with me. We are getting somewhere, it just takes longer, like you said.

@@markdubose1986 when a dog is away from the owners he becomes my dog pretty quickly, quite a few dogs don't want to leave, they love the routines here. It makes a huge difference being away from the owner because the dog mirrors their human, who knows the dog might react and is usually anxious. If you follow your mother, carefully, quietly entering a doorway because she feels something isn't right, you would also be on high alert. And that's not going to help anyone.

People are too soft handed with their dogs and don't work with them. They get a dog, put it in a crate 9 h day, go to work, do 2 terrible stressful walks and ignore the problems. Today in the park a lady had a dog on a harness. the dog was jumping and biting her jacket - she was shouting like a moron. The dog needed a well fit collar and a strong clear physical correction. As a dog leader of 3 dogs - I am very soft handed and love handed with them. But day in and day out it is a military at home. We play and hike and do sports and are happy, but if you mess up and break my trust - a clear punishment will follow. By punishment I mean clear solid correction, or even taking a position of dominance and show this dog - this is completely not allowed. Two of my dogs as puppies were sneaky eating poo. Each of them I caught at the moment, grabbed by the skin of the neck, put into submissive position with belly up. just standing over them, giving 2-3 verbal angry corrections and done - never took a poo in their mouth or any other trash. Sure looks bad, but all the dog felt was a grab by the skin and an angry dude's angry voice. Yes, it caused them a lot of stress, but this stress helped them learn. I know people whose dogs just run around eating crap, getting sick, vomiting. One guy's Weimaraner was jumping in trash bins head first eating leftovers like a lunatic. Which is better ? A dog learning they can get away with things and eating shit or 3 minutes of just showing the dog who's boss. My new 4 month puppy is 95% off leash with perfect obedience, have met over 500 people and dogs and is looking up to me for direction. Treats are just 10% of it all. It is all relationship building. Praising and correcting every single thing that brings value.

Good old puppy socialization , people reject this so much, It comes with the mindstate of “don’t want to put in the work” and “don’t want to socialize my dog “ it creates so many problems when you don’t socialize as a puppy. When I grew up in the hood I learned this lesson by seeing the people who left their dogs chained up in the yard and never doing anything with them

people like that usually think it will make the dog a good guard dog if they dont socialize it. a lot of people are also afraid to socialize their dogs for fear of fights.

El is so true and very good guy have a question I have a border collie that has OCD he’s overstimulated and would work 24 seven if I let him I have a question if he’s outside and he sees like an animal on the other side of the fence And he runs back-and-forth back-and-forth and he gets really really hyped up and then I know the animals gone but my dog is still hyped up running back-and-forth back-and-forth. If I go to get him or tell him, let’s go we’re going in the house he circles me and circles me more, so I can’t walk like a strong hurting instinct if I tell him no and start walking, he will jump up at me and I don’t know what to do about it. What would you suggest?

Overthinking everything is what I’ll definitely say. Do stuff with your dogs and you’ll have a great dog. Get out and explore the world. Take them with you as many places as you can. Hang out with them. Do stuff and you’ll have an amazing dog.

You know what… my dogs are not in any of the 5 stages. My puppy 4 months old GSD may be a lil Barky but not that bad…my border collie is a very confident dog who does not care even if the other dog is reactive. Anyways thank you for a great video. I hope you can do a step by step video on how to have the dog back down on the chickens

What about the type of dog it is. Does that matter? My puppy is a schnauzer and he barks at other dogs and people sometimes. One day we went on a long walk and he didn't bark at any dog or person. What is going on. I walk him everyday 3 times a day. Morning , noon and early evening. or I let him out in the yard that is fence in so he can play w me or along and I don't know what to do. He is 5 months old.
