Decoys are an essential part of any successful turkey hunt, but toms can respond to setups differently throughout the season. Jordan and slade share some knowledge on how to set up your decoys in the early and mid season!

Going for my first turkey this year. Watching all the Primos videos to get ready for the season. I have the ability to hunt two different states, NC and SC, so April is going to be about as sleep deprived as duck season...and I can't wait!

Ok so here's a question. I hunt a area where the hen to tom ratio is way too much. The hens out number the toms about 7-1. We normally only see about 3-4 good toms a year and a few Jakes. What would you recommend we use? I've tried a Jake decoy and have had toms look at it and just walk away. I tried a single Jake and a Jake with a hen and the toms don't even care. Any ideas?

Here are a few options: You could try a strutting decoy, as it can really make a dominant gobbler mad. You could also forego decoys, and simply pattern the hens to get in the path of the longbeard. If possible, probably the best option is to wait until later in the season when the hens leave the gobblers to go sit on nests during mid morning-afternoon. At this point, the gobblers are cruising to find hens that haven't been bred, thus taking out a lot of your competition.

Primos Hunting thanks so much for getting back to me. I'll definitely be trying this.

Call the boss hen or in the later season hunt them around 11 to 1 when the hens go to nest.

The other thing you can do is roost the turkeys then setup between the gobbler and the hens an hour or two before the sun comes up. Let the hens call him off the roost.

Be careful using that strutting Tom with a real tail fan, it sure looks real to other hunters!

Especially if it's being held right up to your face. (49 seconds)

It is a disgraceful way to hunt a turkey. It says a lot about a person's character in how they harvest an animal. Don't you think?
