What Lies Beneath 3 Kilometers Of Ice Antarctica?

2 жыл бұрын

53 million years ago, it was so warm here that the shores were filled with palm trees, and the air temperature rose above 20 degrees Celsius. And just recently, the temperature dropped to minus 89.2 degrees Celsius in this place. It is the fifth largest continent in the world. 99% of the mainland is covered with ice which is on average 3 km thick. It stores about 80% of all freshwater reserves on the planet. And you are not allowed to be here if you haven't removed your wisdom teeth or appendix.
This is Antarctica!
The surface of its mainland is well-studied. But, as always, the most interesting stuff is hidden deep inside. Well, it's time to find out what lies under those thick layers of ice. Is there life there and does it resemble ours?

The part about how Lake Vostok was discovered and confirmed is totally off. Russian pilots first noted the flat area, and the existence of a lake and basic thickness of the ice above the lake was not known until seismic surveys were done by the Russians. Satellite data later showed the flat area on the surface, and the full map of ice thickness (graphics you show at 2:27) was obtained from an airplane-based radar survey in 2000/01 (I was part of that team). That graphic at 4:16 is completely bogus.

If you’re move a living bacteria from it environment it will die. We hope that should be true. Otherwise it has a head start on humanity at what ever effect it will have on modern DNA ability to cope with it. Since scientists are always ready to get it into the lab and try out its effect of animals, or humans. Money being the driving impeller of all greed for knowledge. We also have the seemingly big business of getting profit from ships taking the unsuspecting tourists in for a run around the surface in marathons. Must mankind be destroyer of himself to feed his ego of, “I was in Antarctica and ran around the South Pole “ So, what are the dangers of what is there. Reading some time ago a dozen or so Scientists and assistants, taken from there, due to a mystery illness. Flown to NZ fast. ( Before Covid) ? Not saying ,just thinking as you would. We don’t have mystery for long till its too late to do much about it.
