I just had my first fall ever so I got back on and jumped it again and almost fell off again… I’m scared to ride her! ( it was not her fault at allll )

I am everywhere apparently 😂 And to the other person, getting back on after a fall can be really hard! About a year ago I had the worst accident ever. My OTTB had a freak spook when we were cantering and I had been zoned out and didn’t react fast enough, so I went off his side (he’s 16.2) and slammed into the ground hard. I fractured some ribs, and screwed up my left shoulder really bad. Like nerve damage and cramped muscle stuff. I was too dizzy to get back on so I just walked him around and the next day I forced myself to ride even though I felt like hell. I almost fell off again when he spooked in the same area but I made it through without stirrups and then burst into tears. It took me months to get over that accident and it wasn’t even my scariest fall! However, I’m still suffering from the injuries a year later so that sucks. Just always remember to get back on, and even though you’re scared, you’re not alone. In a way, you have to hold your horse’s “hand” (hoof) to help them get the confidence too!

Also important to say that not only can bad falls be confidence breaking, they can cause trauma and you can suffer from ptsd related to the event. It's a whole other beast than just confidence and it's okay to cry and feel afraid as you battle that.

I completely agree, a little while ago I was trotting with my lesson horse, and she just started cantering out of the blue. (I’m fairly new to horseback riding.) It was my first time cantering and I wasn’t on a lunge line or anything- it was terrifying. Since then I’ve suffered a confidence loss and I’m even scared to trot with that specific lesson horse.

@@hellotheresmallchildHappened to me but with a fall. The lesson horse they give me is pretty difficult: I'm learning as a young adult and she is pretty good for me because she's an expert horse, but has a bad temper on her worst days. She threw me on the sand every lesson for 3 weeks, and I spent months being terrified of her. Then I learned new things and progressed since then (with her) but I' scared of winter

In late 2021 I had my first jumping lesson with a specific horse (I had jumped before and had been riding for about 6 years, just the first time jumping on this horse). He was quite green still (around 6 or 7 years old) and very eager to please. My instructor told me to give a bit more leg before the jump - he took it too enthusiastically and started galloping right before the jump, causing me to loose my balance. I fell and broke 2 vertebrae in my lower back. Luckily I didn’t end up paralyzed, but it was close. I’ve technically recovered fully, but I still have chronic pain. I haven’t ridden since, even though I keep telling myself I want to. There’s a block there. I don’t think enough people talk about PTSD in the equestrian world. It only sunk in for me at the end of 2023 - almost 2 years after the accident - how much trauma I still have from it, and now I’m working with my psychiatrist on finding a therapist. Every time I look up horse riding PTSD, I get articles about PTSD in horses or about using horse therapy for people with PTSD. Which is nice enough, but when the PTSD is caused by riding and the only things you can find are the positives of riding, it’s so very isolating

The trauma is not in the occasion, it is in the nervous system. I highly recommend trauma release by somatic Experiencing. Best to all of you!

Boy, do I FEEL you. It can be very tough. For me it helps to consciously remember that I started riding out of love for horses and nothing else, that me and my horse are PARTNERS and BOTH OF US are allowed to have bad days. One good day doesn't make you a good rider, but one bad day doesn't make you a bad rider either!

Meg, you are such an amazing rider and because of your fall it has turned your riding the wrong way round, but just because of that, doesnt mean you should give up, we all ride different horses at one time, when i was in a riding school i felt so cool cantering round that arena 😅 but now i have my own pony to ride, i can see how different these two horses were, plus bear, jam and all the other horses wouldn’t be where they are right now if you didn’t own them. So you should know that how ever many accidents you have, how ever many times you feel like giving up, we will always be there to give you support ❤

I have to say, I lost my confidence a while back. Still have to gain some of my confidence back, Meg, I’ve been watching you for a bit. We both still have some learning to do. I got bolted off with and shattered my right elbow. I ride western, the trauma I still have from it is still holding onto the horn in a canter. And I’m just now starting to take away from that habit in a trot. I love you Meg, keep it up.

I have just recently lost my confidence from falling off two bolting horses but the first time was quite bad because I blacked out and couldn’t remember much but I do remember that it hurt. I have just started late lessons on Monday to get my confidence back with just trotting poles and I will be cantering next week. I have gone through so many lessons of just crying and wanting to give up but my amazing trainer helped me get back into it after my wonderful 6 years of riding. You are an amazing rider so I know that if I can do it then you can xx.

I had quite a bad fall in February, the horse spooked at a dog and took off jumping over a fence, i fell, and couldn’t breath, i had to sit there for a few minutes breathing and taking in what and just happened, My confidence has just finally started re-building and i’m starting to try get to where i was before the fall,I’m not the best with confidence and after something knocks it down it takes a while to get back up, now i know what to do if she spooked and hopefully i’ll keep it in mind. ❤ now i’ve even jumped bigger than i ever had before, and i hope you can improve like me and get your confidence back, and just know, even if it takes longer to get back on after the fall, you NEEd go get on or your confidence is never going to change. ❤❤❤ i hope this helped people who have recently fallen off and are trying to find more confidence in themselves meg you truly inspire me to ride ❤

I remember when I watched my confidence start to shatter around horses. My first big horse starting bucking in the paddock without warning, without ever having done it before. Threw me clean off. I’ve never been so scared getting back on a horse in my life, and when he did it again after slowly building my confidence back at a pony club event, I broke down in tears. Felt like an idiot but I couldn’t help it. I found out the cause what a broken component in my saddle, pinching him quite badly, but I was still afraid. And it sucked. But people like you, pushing on through bad falls, showing me that it’s okay to be afraid and that it shouldn’t stop me, helped me figure it out. So one day I got back on, and I just started riding again. You are an incredible rider. Please don’t let any terrible fall, any scary encounter, tell you differently. You got this!

I used to always get told I had great confidence, but recently at my last barn my confidence was either great or downright terrible. We did leave that barn for several reasons and somehow I was more confident riding a trail riding horse a month after that than I have been on horses I've known for years. Thank you for posting this and showing people one of the many realities of actual horse riding. Confidence can make or break it, and I stand by that completely.

I know it.s hard, it can get really shitty, i know, been there, loosing my confidence so quickly (in general) ... but good days are coming and you get your confidence back🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰 you just have to relax on your own horses and start new, with small steps, until you gain your confidence ridding your own horses. It seems that is the issue at this point. They do feel you and your heart rate and they can be anxious if you are 😢 don.t let things bubble up (in general), it does you no damn good. You CAN ride and YOU can do ANYTHING you set your mind to !!! Good luck and hopefully we.ll see good news from you soon 🤗🥰Never forget: you are not alone 🤗🥰 hugs and take care.

My dad always used to say that i couldn't ride and that i was to scared to ride (he doesn't ride, has no experience riding horses) cause my horse could get really scared and i could suddenly take off in a sprint, so i had a hard time trusting her and daring to ride her alone. I've trained with her and she gained so much confidence which build a really strong bond of trust. Sadly that horse has passed away in 2020, i got a new horse in 2021 but i've been struggling, i do not have the same trust (yet) as i had with my old horse, i can get really nervous and scared when i feel him tense up even a little bit which ofc is a declining proces.. I've broken down multiple times infront of my mom saying i can't ride that i am to scared, saying everything my dad had made me believe. I never saw this doubt by my mom or other riders around me. Seeing your experience made me really emotional, cause i know exactly what you're going through. It's nice to know that i am not the only one, thank you so much for sharing this. I too am working on my confidence, you're not on this journey alone, we're here too.

I suffered 2 acute strokes song my left arm wing leg are extremely weak, I got back on my horse for the first time this week while my trainer had heron a lead rope, I Broke down from being so anyways, even though I trust my mare completely., having a bar fall had also knocked my confidence in the past & it took me months of hard work but I got there don't I have no doubt that a talented rider as you will get there too, stay strong and trust your muscle memory and don't hold it in letting the emotion out like you do in this video is so hard but I believe it's really important to getting your confidence! ❤

Thank you very much for sharing this. I'm going through something similar now. I had a fall off a spicy little pony I'd bee riding confidently all winter, and now I'm almost in tears at the thought of getting on her. It wasn't even a bad fall. I know I'll get over it, though. One day at a time.

The problem is that this can turn into a spiral. You as a rider loose your confidence and get nervous, which in turn makes your horse nervous. I've been through that and it took a long time to find balance again

I hated loosing my confidence. Took me 3 months to ride again. Luckily I had a lesson already booked and wasn't able to cancel. So I was kinda thrown into ridng even though I was petrified I'd have the same horrible fall again. I know it's hard Meg but we all go through this, it's normal you WILL got your confidence back ❤

It’s ok❤ I used to get really excited to jump but back in July I had a really bad fall after my pony spooked when we landed the jump and the stirrup slammed into the back of my neck underneath the helmet, and my ankle got caught in the other stirrup then over time I got less nervous. But after another fall in January when my pony refused a jump and went flying and completely totaled my arm I lost it again. Just know things take time and will get better

I go through this too. One minute I'm jumping a horse I've never seen before, and the second I can't even get the stride righ on my own horse…

I have fallen of the same horse four times and I thought I would have fear getting back on the horse. But I learned that you take baby steps do some ground work and do some grooming. And ride slowly and when you feel comfortable. And what help me is that a close friend or your riding coach can help too.

The fear eats at you and it’s hard to gain it back. Just find a horse that you can trust to build it back again. Your doing great

I recently had a bad fall about a month ago now I fell and the horse ran over me and stepped on my ribs. I was so lucky to come out with just some bruises but the experience was so traumatizing I couldn't breathe and I actually thought I was going to die that day. I went and rode a week later on a different horse and he took off in a full gallop out of nowhere, I managed to stay on but had a full blown panic attack while still on the horse with no one around. I went back the same day and just arriving at the barn I had a panic attack just looking at the place. I'm starting to get my confidence back thank God but I still have moments of just fear thinking back to the fall. You should be so proud of yourself just getting back on, that's all it takes just getting back on is good enough, one step at a time. 💜
