KOTOR was a big deal because it broke a Star Wars Taboo. It told an original story, completely not connected to the original trilogy. And it was glorious for it!
@Galiant20105 жыл бұрын
@Justin Last Yes, they tied in to some already established lore, but any other game that was Star Wars was tied in with PT or OT stuff, or maybe right after with stuff like the Dark Forces games where Luke is Grand Jedi Master. KotOR was the first game to have it's setting not be so directly tied in with movie era stuff. Yeah, we have lore characters in both sets like Marka Ragnos in Jedi Academy and then exploring their tomb and getting other references in the KotOR games. But KotOR has nothing to do with the characters or politics of the Original or Prequel Trilogies which is what TheNinjaDC was referring to.

Wilfred Willy KOTOR I is a great game but yeah it’s basically like ANH. KOTOR II is the only SW material that I’ve ever played that seems to critique the universe. KOTOR II is original and it’s a shame most people seem to just know the first game and not the second one.
@huntergraham7025 жыл бұрын
The team was told they could either make a game that tied into the prequels ((Attack of the Clones specifically IIRC)) or a game set long before the movies and went with that specifically to make their own story, free from the movies.

But to be fair SWTOR kind of does that... Obviously different gameplay style but for storytelling it's basically the successor since it takes place 300 years after KotOR. Of the 8 class stories I thoroughly enjoyed 4 of them, a couple were just decent and I only really disliked one or two of them. But the Jedi Knight class is basically considered to be KotOR III as far as story.

@Galiant20105 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminreinicke6993 Yeah the expansions haven't been great... I thought the KotFE/ET expansions were actually pretty good as far as the story. It's just the way it was implemented that sucks. With any other content you can feel pretty free to just stop wherever and take a break but the chapter system in those makes you feel like you have to finish it and can reduce the fun of playing. Also just how you can't go around and skip enemies even as a stealth class. The game forces you to fight endless mob after mob. Those are the only real downsides to those expansions because I thought the story was good. But Jedi Under Siege seems to be bringing things back towards the vanilla storytelling, so we will see where things go from here.
@benjaminreinicke69935 жыл бұрын
Galiant2010 I won’t anymore too disappointed by the story to predictable and same abilities and stories for all classes was very lazy in my opinion. They took so much time for that but the result wasn’t my think at all. That’s why almost everyone of my guild stopped playing and the funny thing is we had all content covered me myself was a raider story fanatic. But to get back to the topic I always thought kotor 1 was groundbreaking I’m still addicted to it today. The second part was to rushed, but still good you have to play it with the unlocked content and all the mods. Then I dare to say it even better than the first one. And I thought the development of the 3rd part was canned? And PS let the Skywalkers be, their time is over make movies about the old republic( Revan, exar kun, naga sadow & ludo kressh, Marka Ragnos, tulak hord) or after the skywalkers that would be nice

How about that Rakatan guy trapped for thousands of years? What's up with the Star Forge? The Jedi Temple having ancient secrets? And it completely neglected to answer any questions from the first movie. If it was a whole new movie set on it's own and maybe didn't contain a number, then it might have gone over better and not become the most reviled Star Wars movie ever of all time. But using TLJ as a 'well they did it, and you still hated it' rational is not a good one. Ruin Johnson just wanted to subvert fan expectation, so he made a terrible movie trying to do that, what a shock.

Padawan Tina yes, and it’s also on Steam. Which is superior because ez mods! But that doesn’t change the facts that the game is kind of short, and thus the only real replay value is challenging the harder difficulties, since the multiplayer is somewhat dead (and not all that different from the classic Battlefront 2 anyway, which is also on Steam AND has dedicated servers up for it, which means the multiplayer is busy as heck). Plus the cliffhanger of WHAT HAPPENED TO SEV is still as painful as ever, and the fact that we will NEVER get an answer to it with the current state of Star Wars is just heartbreaking. There is SO much potential for an Imperial Commando game, and the tie-in books by Karen Traviss had a LOT of ideas, information, and characters just BEGGING for use in such a game. The only problem is that it doesn’t fit with Disney’s stupid new canon.

I'm surprised this video didn't really touch on how this game basically made morality systems in games into a big thing. Just like with Resident Evil 4's quick time events, yes it'd been done before, but the success of it in this game is the direct reason that a good/evil meter showed up in practically every major RPG (and even several non-RPGs) for the next several years. While KOTOR certainly has had a role in shaping RPGs as we know them today, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was definitely the first true cinematic RPG that you described, coming out two years before KOTOR. Morrowind also had as much of (if not more than) an influence on today's RPGs than KOTOR ever did. Though one could argue that Bethesda and BioWare make different types of RPGs that are geared to different tastes, a topic that I think should be explored in another video.

Knights of the Old Republic was also on PC, which is where I played it. The fact that it was on PC made it so easily modded. Granted, the modding was primitive, but what was possible at the time made it a blank canvas for modding. Just as with today's games, mods are what make a game worth playing more than once. If you get bored of the game, delete all your mods, and download different mods. And then, you have Knights of the Old Republic 2. That was rushed for release, so most of it was never finished, and the other half was entirely cut, so what we got was only half a game. BUT, the fact that it was only half a game actually made it even more of a blank canvas for modding. I spent years on those game. To be exact, I was still playing them all the way until 2012, and it was all because of mods. My whole-hearted thanks goes to FileFront, the best location to find mods. That place was amazing.

I came to the conclusion that KOTOR is by far the best Star Wars product in existence. The original movie trilogy was good 30 years ago but it didn't age well at all, while all the subsequent movies became gradually worse and worse, until the unwatchable abominations we have nowadays. KOTOR is still amazing and I plan to re-re-play sooner or later. Certainly the graphics is a little outdated and I already know the storyline, but the core of the game is still as awesome as it was at release. Oh and Darth Revan is by far the coolest Jedi/Sith ever. Period.

I've actually held this opinion for a long time. (Though I give KOTOR 2 the number 1 spot, closely followed by number 2) I will never understand why Bioware decided to stop making these games. (And no, STWOR doesn't count.) With such a huge following it financially just made sense to make more of these games decades ago. Even today, with the taint of EA, most gamers I know would kill to see another KOTOR game.

If you consider the fact that Kotor had a whole companion you could miss based on your characters gender (in vanilla without mods) it is to this day still one of the best stories in gaming (that I know of). Even in Dragon Age Origins your story was more on rails than in Kotor oder Kotor 2. Your choices had a real impact on how your story progressed. While there were certainly on two endings, the way how you could get there was vastly different. If I remember correctly you can kill companions in this game that you could also romance if you went into a different direction.

Thank you for this video. Kotor 1 & 2 are among the best game experiences I have ever had. Its quite important for me because the old republic era that was introduced took my heart by storm and i must admit that there was a time when i became so addicted to it that i would literally just assimilate everything i could get on wookipedia and jedipedia about the old republic. Kotor was also responsible for sparking my joy for the millennium prior to the movies in general. From the rakatan empire with the killiks and kwa with the arks all the way to darth tenebrous which was before disney happened. Technically there are defined eras after the movies too with the sith changing their rule of two to the rule of one etc but those stories never struck me personally. Kotor and kotor 2 in particular are vary important because they did two things ( in my opinion). Kotor 1 introduced a galaxy that was bigger then just the movies and the cartoons which were all based around a specific era of the galactic republic. It also gave the opposing sides more character as it wasnt just pure evel vs pure good any longer. Kotor 2 gave us an insight into the philosophies and beliefs in star wars. It addressed and dealt with concepts like purpose and free will in a world that is intrinsically governed by the force. It also talked about the sith and the jedi as force users and what their respective beliefs really are about and what fault they had imbedded intrinsically in their core. Kotor 2 basically tells us how star wars works. I could talk about so much more but there is only so much that can fit in a comment like this. Anyway thanks for this video. This kinda videos always get an instant like from me :]

Not to rain on the parade but there's a big factual inaccuracy in this video. There were tons of RPGs with non-isometric 3D graphics prior to 2003 Dues Ex and VtMB: Redemption were already out by then, System Shock and Ultima Underworld were both on their second installments, and the Elder Scrolls was already on its 3rd. Bioware was actually pretty late to the 3D graphics party, not to mention the bulk of those games were also utilizing real time combat while KOTOR was still using turn based.

The twist in the middle of the game was so good. How can you poopoo all over how good the story was. It literally broke the exclusive independence of sith and jedi. By the end of that game the entire moral philosophy surrounding the light and dark side were thrown into question. Before that game it was impossible for an established Sith to become a Jedi. We had only seen it one way before. Jedi fall and they become Sith. KOTOR didn't do that. KOTOR gave you the freedom to be as good or as bad as you want. Your actions reflected in your alignment score. Doing bad things increased your dark side alignment. Doing good things increased light side alignment. It was a virtual moral and ethical lesson.
@Armataan5 жыл бұрын
You have to ignore the entire extended universe besides that game to think that is true.

KotOR was great because it allowed you to choose your path and for the plot twist. But, according to Lucas, his movies were ultimately about the raise, fall from grace and redemption of Anakin. And also according to the man, the proto order was grey or “at balance”. Ashla (the lightside) and Bogan (the darkside) were held as abstract concepts. The light side puristic Jedi Order formed after the 1st Schism some 1,000 generations bby.

So many inaccuracies in this video. 1. There's already been 3D RPGs before KotOR, both isometric, 1st and 3rd person. For example, Gothic was 3rd person. Hell, even Bioware's own Neverwinter Nights was 3D although isometric and developed on the same engine as KotOR. 2. Morrowind was also 3D, and it actually came out one year before KotOR, not after like you claim. 3. KotOR wasn't exclusive for Xbox, it also came out for PC and is still sold on Steam. 4. So you're saying, that it wasn't writing, that made KotOR's story stand out from other RPGs, but then a second later you're saying it had exceptionally well-written characters. First of all, its characters aren't any more exceptional than in any other well-written RPG of the time. And secondly, character-development is also writing. 5. Why do you show screenshots of SW: The Old Republic, when talking about KotOR? And besides all that, you really fail to explain, why KotOR was a big deal. You're just fanboying over it, instead of professionally explaining features unique to this game, and why these features were superior to those of its contemporaries.

Kotor 1 was a love letter to everything great about the Star Wars franchise. It managed to hit so many tropes of the films but still feel very original. The writers of the current movies should really go back and play Kotor for some pointers on how to make a good Star Wars story.
@michaelschwartz98705 жыл бұрын
My explanation, very similar to yours, is thus: it's a story that really stays true to star wars, and has a twist that rivals "I'm your father" without outright copying it. It was a full and coherent story. Also, like you said, it was one of the first games of it's kind, with the freedom to choose and fully explore that kind of world (s). But, for me mostly, it was the fact that it came out in the golden age of video games... I dont play many games these days, so I could be way off... but with the introduction and acceptance of massive dlc dumps we have ended up in a time when games are just glorified beta-level demos on release... then they sell you a "dlc" which in truth is just a chunk you should've gotten on release. Dont get me wrong, I appreciate a constant contenuation of a game, but no game I've played in the last decade has been as satisfying as games that were 100% on release in the late 90s.
