Zylenox can make unplayable levels, he made golden shade. Anyway I thought this was a really interesting video and touches on the difference I noticed between the 2 a long time ago in a way more collected and thought through way. Easily 2 of my all time favorite creators in the game but for very different reasons. Zylenox made a bunch of atmospheric masterpieces with incredible music representation, jam-packed with early newgrounds nostalgia, and Devin makes unhinged acid trips.

your comment about devins levels being like a diary is a really good way to put that. he has no rules and just builds whatever the hell he wants, whether it fits or not. i think part of the reason his levels can feel unsettling at times is because of the fact that they are decorated so well, yet there are so many random things that are unpolished or just dont fit the level at all, yet they are still good. truly one of the most unique creators of this era of gd

"He doesn't want people to like his levels, he wants them to be disgusted by it." In a few ways (excluding having a massive ego), Devin is kind of the Lars von Trier of GD. He doesn't create for an audience, he creates for himself. He doesn't make levels to impress you, he makes them to repulse you. Some might see this as shock value and nothing more, and that definitely has some merit. However, experimenting with media by doing things like Devin or Trier also has some merit. At the end of the day, it's a free world, and people are gonna make what they want to make. If you don't like it, then just move on with your life. (btw if you don't mind gore and intense subjects, go watch The House that Jack Built. It was made by Lars von Trier and it's a fantastic horror movie imo. It's DEFINITELY not for everyone tho.)

Devin has inspired me so much, for his rebellious attitude towards the rating system. After over 7 years of not making a level, Devin and Mangut gave me the opportunity to make a part in a collab on his account called “Mangut Birthday” These two gave me the confidence I needed to start finally making a new level. I’ll try to make this like no other level in the game. Like how Man Man gave gd community utter disgusted feelings. I will try to give people the most Raw, Personal, and Emotional level I can hopefully invoke. Thank you Devin, DiamondDemon935, and Mangut for giving me the push I needed. 💗 Please look forward to the release of the level (in like about a year. lol)

2003Devins work reminds me of dadaism sometimes. It was an artistic movement after WW1, which had the purpose of confusing and unnerving observers with randomness and meaninglessness. It challenged what could be considered art. Devin has a simular approach, where he just makes whatever confusing shit he wants and lets you figure it out for yourself.

4:08 slight nitpick, what youre describing here is street art! graffiti is often done for the same kinds of reasons but particularly *has the artists name* attributed to it, either as a tag or as the only focus of the art piece. street art is simply an art piece, graffiti is "getting up" with your name. either way tho this is honestly a really good comparison

I think my favorite part about Devin's levels beyond the crude and bizarre decoration, is that they always (at least most of them) use songs that aren't on Newgrounds. He goes so far as to pick a song HE likes, even if it's not usable on GD, and use it anyways. Widder, for example, used a Jackal Queenston song-- someone whose music isn't on NG. One of my favorite levels from Devin is his level called Game Player. It’s completely different than any of his other levels because you start out with Mastergame style mechanics, but then have to use those to hit buttons to move around a 2nd cube which later on you have to use to move a 3rd cube. It’s Minigame ception & I love it. Plus it uses the most unique song for GD, Another one bites the dust by Queen. This was the 1st level I ever saw in GD to use a real song in a level that wasn’t a NONG song. Later on there was Only in Ohio Dawg by cw2003 gb which used the entirety of Free Bird but this level came 1st. I love the normal interesting gameplay Devin has in his other levels, but this is just the type of not too hard puzzle game style stuff I like to see.

The way Devin creates was honestly the thing that made me pick up the editor again. The only two 2.1 levels I’ve completed have had zero theming whatsoever, and that’s because I think it’s more fun that way. The creating process for my only rated level atm involved me randomly coming up with something and thinking, “that seems cool, lets put it in the level”.

He definitely brings a level of eclecticism to geometry dash levels with his style. Which i haven’t really seen anyone in this game execute as well as he does In a weird way he reminds me of Mike Patton with his bands like Mr Bungle and Fantomas. Its a weird comparison but it makes a lot of sense, an extremely talented musician who utilises his talent to make the weirdest, wildest stuff imagineable with absolutely no care as to how it should progress, its disgusting in places but thats the whole point of it all. You can listen to any of the music made by those two bands and see where i’m coming at with this analogy. Devins like an outsider to the modern landscape of creating and will go onto make whatever weird stuff he feels like and i hope he never stops.

Zylenox levels are like the story mode of an fps game. You walk into it and expect a good, high-quality, detailed story. Devin’s levels are like the online ffa pvp severs. It’s wild and unpredictable, unorthodox and sometimes completely madcap. You never know what you’re gonna get. At the end of the day, it’s all about which one you enjoy. A grounded, solid theme or a completely crazy unorthodox level that’s just as enjoyable as the other.

There's that whole saying of "Good artists borrow, great artists steal," from Picasso, and I feel like the former really applies to Devin in an intentional way. I feel like he's intentionally breaking all these rules so that other creators would be inspired enough to "steal" from him in the sense of breaking every established "rule" of how to make a GD level. Honestly inspires me with a level I'm making when I'm somewhat trying to play by the rulebook when really I should think about how I can push the envelope a little.
