A true testament to Singapore's docile population that they have forgotten how to make a place by themselves, unless the authority gives the green light first. Also it reflects on the land-use policies that make people have no enduring sense of ownership over their homes.

hey tehsiewtai, just enjoyed another of your videos about space and place. You have made a distinction between the two words. I see a novel mix of the two to read SPLACE. This site on terra firma is our human claim to something Special, Psychic and Psychological, Likekable and Lovable, Accessable and Alluring, Comfortable and Charming, and (finally) Emotionally Special. This was really interesting and well done 😃 I came "off the street" (or algorithm) if you will, without any knowledge of your channel so it took me a long time into the video to confirm what city/country you were talking about, but it was still very thought provoking. If you want a bigger international audience, though, it might help to give a liiiittle bit more context and not assume we know what you mean when you mention the name of a street or place. The visuals help of course but a short description of some of them would also be helpful :) I will look out for newer ones.

Do you think America and Australia (and western countries in general) are filled with non-places? I feel that the streets there are too straight and too grid-like...
@mirkoIncertiFornaciari2 жыл бұрын
I'm from Italy and I can say here (and in Europe in general) there's lot of diversity between cities' infrastructure designs. Barcelona is a good example of a grid city that is very livable and walkable

lucky you got a 'strayan here. I'm from Sydney which is blessed by it's abundance of rail based suburbs, with a town centre by many stations, in theory, a mass produced amount of places. Can I walk to my nearest place: yes... barely (most houses are 10-20 mins walk from a place) Am I interested in my nearest place: there's food... but nothing much. So no... apart from the station Do I bump into friends at my nearest place: Yep... though not many. Gladly I now live near one rather closer mate. So... it's closer to a non-place as it mainly facilitates needs rather than wants or resultant events. As for the rest of Sydney... actually it's weird. Some areas like the city and inner suburbs are full of places... the major unis are close to spaces. then we got the railway suburbs like where I'm from, they got some places, but they aren't that great worst are the outer suburbs... idk where their places are. So in summary... we are kinda mixed in quality, mainly on the lower end of the stick. I'll end with a single term from Killing Sydney (a book), to describe great places: "pokability"
@yokelengleng Жыл бұрын
@@yukko_parra thanks! Actually I went to Melbourne and I feel there are not many "places", more "spaces". Another example I can think of is the Asian shopping mall vs Western shopping mall. Asian shopping malls are well designed and you can spend the whole day there, therefore it's a place. In Western malls, however, the design isn't very intricate and the vibe is just like "just shop and get out of here". Basically more like a "space", in my opinion as an Asian.

Hi I have a question. Do bike lanes affect the walkability of places?
@ST-yb1rf2 жыл бұрын
But the shops at toa payoh are great walkability but subjected to weather conditions:/// for me , shops being accessible comfortably even in bad weather is important. Wide shelters or shops being in a big building is good for me

Something like Japan's covered shopping streets in famous districts in Osaka and Tokyo There's at least 1 local place with such a design - Clarke Quay. Change Alley? But they are not in our neighbourhoods.

Great video! I'm looking for research and resources about attractive places. Local officials in my town will build a new place, a kind of food court but using unmoving train cars so people can dine inside the trains. I'm skeptical and think it's ridiculous and inefficient use of space. Also provides unnecessary liability for the place to maintain. So, I collect as many resources as possible to view my local officials objectively.

I feel like the lack of bureaucracy is not the death of places, but rather the uptight attidude from these organisations! If there was a way to regulate the creation and upkeep of these places, and overall a bigger community involvement in getting our voices heard, we can find a nice balance.

Great, interesting video! I would be curious of people's thoughts about my Special Administrative District. Do you think it adheres to the points in the video? Clues to its location: You pass by on the MRT You pass by via bus Your school arranged a learning journey to it It is near the CBD. Certain segments were featured in this video. There is more gold here than Fort Knox.
