ICYMI: That wave in that slinky moves in speed of sound, too.

I'd like to add that, for the most part, current comercial jet planes are slower than those of the sixties. This started with Boeings 757 and 767. It was done intentionally to reduce fuel consumption, as a small decrease in speed resulted in significant fuel savings.
@jhug1112 жыл бұрын
Yep it’s due in large part to high bypass engines that basically use a big fan for a big portion of their thrust. They’re more efficient but work best at a slightly slower speed. We mention this is a KZbin short accompanying this series.

Love Aviation science, would definitely like more on this. My childhood obsessions were Dinosaurs and Space. I never really grew out of my obsession for both. Definitely more of a Space nerd now than a Dinosaur one.

I lived near NAS Miramar, where they had the "Top Gun" school in the 80s. Those guys used to BOOM us ALL. THE. TIME.! It never broke any windows... just rattled them. I'm totally nerding out! 🤓

Remember when I was a kid, the boom would make the Windows fall out of the house.

3:35 Interstellar is the exception (spoiler alert)... When the airlock dock explodes, everything just instantly goes from extremely dramatic music and sounds to complete silence as the debris explodes and scatters into the void. Amazing visuals. The most intense movie explosion I've felt. I jumped from my seat even the second time I saw the movie.

In the 50s, we built a wood cannon, filled it with firecrackers lit the fuse, and ran. 10 seconds later, there was a tremendous boom. We were astonished! We went back, and the fuse didn't work. Our first sonic boom. We did succeed in blowing up the cannon later. Boys will be boys

Very interesting video! can't wait for the next part. If the boom is continues do you keep hearing it ?
@buddyroe612 жыл бұрын
I don't hear it anymore and have not for years
@jsfbr2 жыл бұрын
You hear it only once (the two coupled booms) right after the airplane passes by your position. The faster the airplane goes, the larger the lag between it and the boom.
@TheRealMozes2 жыл бұрын
@@jsfbr I see. But is it only when you go past the speed of sound. Or do you hear it always when it is above and the sound wave passes your position.

Is the speed of sound also influenced by pressure? Where temperature is the vibration of atoms, pressure is like their proximity. The pressure at high altitudes is also much lower than at sea levels.
@jhug1112 жыл бұрын
Amazingly, no! This is apparently a question that trips up pilots all the time when they’re taking their license exams. Higher pressure may force molecules closer together, but it also increases density so the molecules take up less volume. The two effects cancel each other out completely.

Hey Julian I would like to know why a plane dive caused by a sonic boom is undercoverable and often kills the pilot

Confused, how exactly are the waves in an ocean different? Bc it seems to me that the only real difference is your perspective relative to the conducting fluid. A pebble in a pond creates waves outward under the water too doesn't it? Picturing an explosion under water the energy waves out in every direction. Someone explain please?

Don't need to be an Olympic athlete to a fighter pilot, and there are vision correction surgeries that could have qualified you for the Navy or Air Force (LASIK, PRK). I don't know how old you are, but those options have been around. All you needed was a competitive GPA, good test scores on ASTB (Navy) or AFOQT (Air Force), good recommendations, and good statement of purpose. STEM degrees are preferred but not necessary. Furthermore, fighter pilot slots are not guaranteed, needs of the Air Force/Navy and your performance while in training/school.

I hear like a UFO sound wooOOOOoooommmmm like slow woop or drop of water then there's a plane like instantly out of a worm hole then there's the plane's you hear falling from forever away like where they coming from and where they going and then there's the silent ones a million miles above like intercontinental I swear I saw something like a space X with a flip maneuver like jumping out and bouncing off the atmosphere
