There's a tendency in a lot of electronic music scenes to make music to a template, usually to encourage DJs in that scene to play the records. It's usually artists that make music for its own sake, rather than as part of a scene, or who are influenced by the scene rather than adhering it, that stand the test of time.

While this is technically a compilation, I want to throw in Future Unknown, issued by Vivarium Recordings. Putting aside that I’m on here … it is two and a half hours of music that covers a lot of electronic ground, especially the 2010s underground varieties (vaporwave and the like). What’s impressive about it was you had about 45 or so different artists contributing to a general idea that simultaneously goes into a million different directions yet is able to create a natural and cohesive flow. You can also think of it as six or more different sci-fi films merged into one … and it works =]

Flume is the best! He has such a unique sound that's all his own which might be his biggest strength and maybe weakness imo. He pushes soooo hard to be different and forward thinking that at times I get lost as a listener. Just want a normal drum beat sometimes haha. But without a doubt, he is one of the best in electronic music so nothing but respect for Father Flume!

Blackboard Jungle Dub from 1973 IMO the most timeless album. The Dub pioneers also pioneered all electronic music and modern pop music with the producer as an artist and not only engineer.

I was going to say Portishead's Dummy, which really is timeless but also re-defined trip hop down to a formula that a lot of bands bit, BUT, in the same way you mentioned genre defining, I would argue that Discovery is both timeless and genre defining. The way it introduced their style of sampling and of course influence on house in general is crazy. Without Discovery you don't get records like Cross. It's the rougher more electro version of Discovery, and also two French dudes. Also Daft Punk caused folks like Deadmay5 and others to use crazy helmets in the dance genre.

Massive Attack’s Protection and Mezzanine are levels of timelessness above the mentioned in the video. Orbital’s In Sides, Prodigy’s Experience and Music for the Jilted Generation, Snap’s The Power and so on are the albums of real timeless electronic music…

Nice video, and agree with all the picks. However, I would contest that your genre defining album list at the end is definitely missing Selected Ambient Works 85-92 / Richard D. James Album by Aphex Twin because of the sheer amount of influence and groundbreaking elements Twin managed to impart through his discography. I feel like any "all time" list of electronic music that makes no reference to Aphex Twin is lacking. I would also suggest that Burial's Untrue is a truly timeless classic for all of the items that you mentioned (except Range perhaps, because the vibe is pretty consistent throughout), maybe a 4/5 on your scale but it holds up amazingly being the purest distillation of walking around a busy metropolis at night, a bit of rain, traffic, catching snippets of people's conversation. The crackly, lo-fi aesthetics make it really stand-out from the sounds at the time and the introspective take on dubstep and UKG was really fresh and still stands as a pinnacle of what that genre of electronic music can really achieve. I'm hugely into Drum and Bass but I feel like that genre has diverged and evolved so quickly and rapidly with trends coming and going that it's hard to really nail down some timeless contributions because part of the excitement of the music is seeing where people can still innovate, which contrasts with the other aspect of the genre which is where producers try to find mainstream crossover. There are timeless singles, but no timeless albums in DnB in my opinion.

Great points! I hear you on Burial and Aphex Twin having massive influence...especially Burial. To me, both of these artists fit into more of an influential category than timeless IMO. Aphex Twin's sound palette is so experimental and 90s so it's hard for me to hear past those qualities for a timeless label. He is definitely groundbreaking though and I'm sure so many artists wouldn't be doing electronic music if Aphex Twin didn't exist. I just relistened to Burial's Untrue, and you're right about his sounds and aesthetic still feeling fresh...I'm with ya there. I guess since we're going deeper I'll be a lil nitpicky and say that I only hear one overall mood on that album and hear only a few recurring drum sounds and ambient pads. Wish he expanded things a bit more. Still tho...it's a great example of a nearly 20-year-old record that still sounds like it could come out today and turn heads. Timeless art is always subjective tho...even with a goofy checklist haha. But I wanted to try and see if I could make it a little less biased. I was hoping to chat with some devout electronic fans and see how close I was to making a concise list so seriously thanks for the feedback!

It's good but, timeless? I don't know... The drums sound very 1990 and those KorgM1's presets (especially that flute) sound pretty cheesy today, in my opinion.

​@@kazoku_rec The drums sound fine to me. Not overproduced, not overprocessed, and no cheesy auto-tuning to be found on the entire album. If anything's cheesy, it's today's overuse of auto-tuning. There's nothing wrong with some good presets either. I sometimes do this myself as well. Some people just want to make music, without having to create everything from scratch. The latter falls under sound design and is not a necessity to make good music.

@ I've experienced this myself as well. What i was trying to say is, there's lot's of timeless music out there, but all music is tied to the equipment used at that time. Even contemporary music is tied to the equipment used today. Some music has better production qualities than others, not everyone has access to the best studios or equipment. All this overuse of auto-tuning and extreme limiting these days. The latter is to achieve more loudness, even though there's a volume knob on pretty much every playback device, but hey, someone's mixdown is louder and so tends to stand out more. I could go on about waveforms etc. Anyway, i do think that Engima album still sounds as good as back then.

Discovery has almost no skips imo. A lot more depth across the track-listing. It feels like they honed in their skills on Discovery and made their sound more palatable. Homework is a bit too wonky and quirky at times for my taste. I wanted more memorable / hooky moments...just my take on it. Da Funk and All Around The World are def classics though!

Timeless album is an oxymoron and in the same breath all albums are electronic. Nothing on this list is over 50 years old intimating that early electronic musicians like Kraftwek or Morton Subotink weren’t timeless. Albums have existed for a little over 100 years and are on their way out. This whole exploration seems flawed at the onset.
