As a beginning investor, well trader to be more exact, I'm pretty confused why in general people are so freaked about by the risk in stock market. I mean if you keep an eye on your stocks, and have done proper research, it shouldn't be hard to buy with care and sell when things are going bad. Losing 10 % is not a big deal, if you know you can outweight it by just buying more the same stock. The again, usually I think it's best to just take the hit and put same money on something inexpensive you expect to rise. It doesn't matter how big losses or how big wins you gain. As long as you're right over 50 % of your investments, you're going to come out winning, and that's not hard to do with proper research.
@nachannachle27065 жыл бұрын
Good balanced work on this topic, Richard. My view is that *pragmatic* investors go back and forth between focusing on quantitative (numerical) metrics (P/E ratio, ROE, etc) and qualitative (executive) metrics (i.e business model, marketing strategy, etc). Investors who lock themselves on one end or the other of this spectrum often end up disconnected from the reality of an entreprise/company. In other words, you can't just go by the books because the books can be cooked, and you can't just believe the announcements because they can fuel the hype.

@James Sanchez beyond good quality. I haven't had any probably with it but I've only put 10k miles on it. If you have a flat tire or fender bender they'll take care of it for you and even come to you. Loving it so far especially the autopilot feature. My advice is to get one as a loaner or lease. Test driving doesn't tell you enough. If u have a house you'll love not having to go to the gas station and for longer trips, the supercharging network is best in class. I did a 12hr roadtrip to LA and it was easy to just drive 85 and quickly charge for about 15mins at each one, autopilot also did 90% of the driving so it was very relaxing. Obviously, eyes should always be on the road tho and you should always be ready to take over.

pierrot SS where are you from?tesla business needs more expansion and if the expansion is done wrong causes for risk owning the car for a year or so doesn’t help you understand the risk or the cons of the vehicle/product. plus with a series of other cars competing for its space soon giving different options to people with different styles and pros can cause a lot of uncertainty. it’s cool you own a tesla but it’s not a car it’s more fancy technology than a car which is why millennials jump on board. not to say i wouldn’t buy one but with robinhood and other apps now helping flood the market with kids jumping on board a trend jump to gain profits

Interesting. But I think what makes you are a value investor or speculator is not what company you buy, but how much you know about the company you invest in (fundamentals, economic moats, insights, and etc). As myself, self value investor in South Korea , EV battery industry is huge industry (LG CHEMICAL is NO 2 in battery manufacturer atm and many other vendors along with it) and growing super fast quarterly. I don’t invest in EV industry because I have lack of knowledge of this industry, too much capital expenditure (bad cash flow) and uncertainty about winning the competition against CATL or Panasonic. That s why I decided not to speculate but invest in others :) ( but if you know well about this industry, I think it s really a good time to invest in the EV industry)

I liked your particular definition of 'speculative' and was a new concept for me, thank you for the insight. However, (disclaimer: am TSLA holder) I do not believe the comparison of bagel shops is the appropriate analogy. Given the fundamental differences in pretty much every way when comparing electric cars to Internal Combustion (IC) cars, it is like comparing a buggy whip manufacturer to a transmission manufacturer (or, Blockbuster to Netflix). Unfortunately, the competing car companies are suffering from the classic 'Innovators Dilemma' (you could probably make a whole video covering that) and none, up until maybe 2 years have substantially invested in the new wave of electric vehicles. The reality is, a company can not just move their core capabilities to electirc overnight, as it represents a new core capability (much of the cost of an EV are the batteries, battery management system, and electric drive train - all of which are non-existant in IC cars) which must be built FROM SCRATCH. Tesla's lead over the competitors has only grown, and so far it appears the only two companies that have a chance at this are VW and Toyota (VW is still quite behind - but are going all in, where Toyota is too obsessed about Hybrids and Hydrogen). Mark my words, lots of blood to be spilled in Autos this decade!

Speculation: you dont get paid anything by providing your own currency/money. Investment: you get paid by providing the same money. Do Tesla pay you to speculate in owning it? No. You speculate solely on the next buyer paying more for the same ownership stake. Does Apple? Yes. They pay you dividends, no matter what the next person wants to pay for ownership in the company. @Sonymnms 52 They made a non-GAAP profit and and had strong solid positive cash flow. Only GAAP profit was negative. The main reason for the difference is that GAAP forces them to defer far more revenue to the future on their leasing business when it is money that they are making now and where the probability of the deferred revenue becoming a problem is extremely low. Since their average doubling time for production is 18 months, deferring revenue makes the situation look far worse than it actually is which makes GAAP earnings far less useful than FCF and non-GAAP.

Hi there, I may do a video on those topics but I'll also address your questions here. To be honest, I'm not sure where you would get live analyst updates; there are some sites (i.e. Globe and Mail) that highlight a few analyst ratings for different stocks, and you can get ratings directly from the companies typically through their brokerages services, but I'm not aware of any site or service that aggregates that research live. As for the second point, we typically first see a company's results through a document known as the 8K (in the U.S.) and this is filed BEFORE the earnings call. You would need to subscribe to some notification service to be updated when an 8K is filed, but there are plenty out there (the one I use is through my work and is a paid service). Hope this helps!

@@abigheyl25 We could argue that technically, with the covid-19 pandemic, we have experienced a recession. It is clear however that, given the very specific circumstances and the fact that it was an exogenous shock, it was very different from a "normal" recession. For a start, there has been a general financial optimism. The stock market recovered from its 2020 crash in literally 3 weeks, and has skyrocketed since then. During this period savings rate have generally grown, and governments have been able to get enormous financial resources trough debt. You can take for a comparison the recession that started in 2007. In the following 2 years the US stock market continued to go down and in 2009 it had lost 50% of its value. Saving rates collapsed and so did many financial institution and the housing market. With saving rates going down, housing loosing their value and a bear market, for years the general experienced a severe decline in wealth. Governments were unable to do much as even in advanced economies (especially Europe) they were at risk of default. Tesla has not faced such a crisis. What Tesla is facing is an extremely optimistic bull market, and extremely generous stimulus from government and central banks. In such a favorable situation, it is kinda obvious that Tesla is going well in the stock market. But during an endogenous and severe economic and financial crisis (2007-like) I honestly think that a company with the risk exposure of Tesla would have simply collapsed.

Tesla is only speculative if you have insufficient information and insufficient insight (thinking inside the 20th century box). A horse drawn carriage company had a tried a true business for many years at the turn of the previous century, by your incorrect definition it would be an "investment" (and secure though they go bankrupt in a few years) while Ford with a new production line to make cars would be "speculative". My definition of Speculation is to bet money for the PURPOSE of making money, and an Investment is placing money for the PURPOSE of helping to fund innovation, new projects new technology, and improve society. Also a company is not necessarily inherently risky, its perceived as risky if you have insuficent information, but it can be perceived as not risky for someone with relevant information. Tesla and Virgin Galactic can be seen as risky for someone with limited information, while someone else could estimate that there is little risk(good or bad) since Tesla could be evaluated as extremely likely to succeed and Virgin Galactic could be evaluated as almost certain to go bankrupt within a few years.

I'm kind of getting tired of people saying things are OverValued. If the market ends the day on a high note than that's the market determining its value. Your personal emotions and feelings be damned! The market doesn't care what you THINK a stock should be the market will always be the final verdict on value at the end of a day.

That or people are so desperate to invest in anything its value disconnects from what it is worth. In know way should tesla be worth more than Toyota, but it is. Tesla is a great company, but in know way does it deserve to worth almost 100 billion more than Toyota.

@@austinblackburn8095 for now, yes you are right.. but look 5-10 years, it is too under-valued now, but yes i won't buy tesla during these days, i would wait for it to deep more
@austinblackburn80954 жыл бұрын
@@mal_wa_a3mal Well 5 to 10 years is a long time to price in to the stock and im not sure a 300 billion dollar evaluation is fair then. Competition in electric is increasing. Right now Tesla is the Apple of electric cars, but can they realistically keep that as other car companies add more and more electric cars to their luxury car divisions? Also Tesla is looking to release cheaper and cheaper cars which might help their market share, but could make their brand name overall less desirable especially over seas where people tend to see cars even more so than America as a status symbol. I think Tesla will around for a while I just don't see it even comming close to jusifying its current 280 billion dollar value.

As much as I agree with you on this, missing out on becoming a millionaire because I followed logical investing strategies with Tesla has ruined me. If the market doesn't care about fundamentals and companies announcing negative EPS can shoot up while those with solid EPS decline then I might as well speculate and hope to cash out before the bubble bursts. We're living through the ultimate clown bull market.

I dont think Tesla's todays price is justified by any fundamentals. Investing is relatively easy, if any given company makes profits, the stock will convert itself into a savings account and its much more likely that the investment will grow with time. Although Tesla's products are good for the environment and are the future of vehicles, this story is completely different compared to investing in Tesla. Simply, Tesla is way overvalued.

A SWOT analysis will help you understand how the business will do, but the stock price is something else ON TOP of that. Amazon is a highly valuable company, but is it worth $1T? $10T? $100T? It’s an extreme example, but just because something is valuable doesn’t mean it’s stock price isn’t too high
