I listen to very little pop music, but Billie's music, to me, is such a delightfully different style. Most music we are used to starts with everything mezzo and goes bigger and louder, while mezzo is where Billie usually tops out. It's her subtlety and nuance that I enjoy so much, with more space around the notes than any artists I can think of. Her singing, along with Finneas' production invite you in. I can listen to her songs and enjoy them for the emotive content, or I can listen many time and admire the shear brilliance of the production and arrangements. I love big and massive productions as much as anyone (Nightwish!), but Billie's minimalist style is very welcome. I doubt than there will be many trying to copy her style, because it is actually more challenging to pull off than just adding more volume. It falls upon Billie as a performer to be more vulnerable and honest than many are comfortable with, especially at such a young age.

Excellent episode! I'm so glad that Billie is now generally considered a serious and innovative artist (remember all the "industry plant" accusations ... oh, and everybody's favorite jibe, "she just whispers"?!?!? LOL). Too many people confuse talent with taste. You don't have to like Billie's music, but you cannot deny her talent, her commitment, her creativity and her inspiration as a human being with a giant heart. Thanks for translating this in both technical and emotional currencies!

The BEST analysis that has ever been done on Billie Eilish, thank you so much ❤️ as a vocal coach and music teacher, I always keep up to date with new singers, and for me Billie Eilish has something special that has never been seen before… FINALLY A TRUE ARTIST 🙏🏻 For me she was able to vocally put music and poetry together, she is both a singer and a poet, the emotional intelligence and power she has in her voice is incredible. Her intimacy, the messages she gives to the world through her music? Amazing. After 20 years of vulgarity and only fake pop and garbage shows, a true artist has finally arrived who makes her real art and for every work she puts her unmistakable signature. So young, but with so much potential and with so much clear ideas about who she wants to be as an artist and as a person. An artistic and creative maturity that I didn't see from MJ. Thanks for this perfect analysis, really beautiful… 🙏🏻 But I would have added a parenthesis also on her Jazz vocality by showing when she sings the 2 songs of Peggy Lee (one together with the legend Debbie Harry), Julie london , “santa song" on SNL dressed like Marylin Monroe (her vocal wow.. brought me back to the shows that were held in the 30/40s in the clubs ) and also "Sally'song" of Nightmare before Christmas because it’s there that you notice the skill of Billie. She has been able to modernize by adapting a jazzy vocalism of the 20-50s to any musical genre, incredible ... there is so much to discover about Billie's vocality that for this reason makes us understand how revolutionary she is and as a vocal coach ... many fail to understand how she sings, if she sings (😂🤦🏻‍♀️) the absurd thing there are also those who say "who cannot sing" Etc and it’s there, in not knowing how to define it both vocally, but also in composition (bc she doesn’t have a musical genre, she uses everything, anti pop artist and anti genres artist) .. which is the revolution of this artist. I can't wait to see her grow as a vocalist and artist. She has a HUGE potential. as you said there is no one in history to have THAT specific voice, that's why in my opinion for me it will be the Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse of the present and future because although they don't have a huge vocal range (many don't know it but Whitney houston doesn't have a huge range), but vocally they always will be special…. the greatests of all time bc you don't have to have a huge vocal range or “scream” (belt) all the time to be an amazing singer and Billie voice is timeless, she has no age ... she knows how to take you back to the 20-50s and then even today if she wanted to ... as you said obviously she can, if she can sing so well closing the notes in her mouth so much, controlling the sound that comes out so well and squeezing so much on each note, imagine if she didn't ... but I like this about Billie, I don't want her to become like all the other singers because unfortunately people always want photocopies, then in the meantime when they are all the same , it becomes boring not to see theirs uniqueness anymore…. once upon a time people liked only the different artists, the true creativity, the uniqueness of an artist and seeing an artist as young as billie have so much success after 20 years of pop industry with the same producers, the same composition, rhythmic and vocal / autotune that have made everyone uniform to be photocopies ... it's revolutionary for me… the beauty of Billie is that she is DIFFERENT IN EVERYTHING she creates. Voice, composition and even in her music videos. This is MINIMALIST ART, little, but of quality so beautiful 👏🏻. I have always loved the simplicity of true art and she and her brother represent it. Btw thanks for this beautiful analysis, it will be very useful to me with my students ❤️Never stop talking about Billie because she has something that other artists today don’t have: the real creativity, she is completely connected with her art (HER music that she creates by HERSELF). They are rare artists like this and we (music expert) must fight so that the generations of future artists can always pursue their passion and inner art without NEVER being destroyed by anyone. The inner creativity that each of us has inside is UNIQUE… it’s a RARE GEM 💎 … and must be protected and music, arts in general exists for this: to translate that gem/creativity into something that can be seen or heard by others and it’s there that we can admire the true beauty of art ❤️

Hi Beth, been looking forward to this and am not disappointed. What a great, thorough analysis. You hit on two key points: the meticulous effort Billie and Finneas put into their productions, and how Billie's focus is always on how best to encompass the emotions of a song. You asked about her concerts, and frankly, from what I can tell, no hate, but her vocals often seem to get lost in the incredible energy of her crowds, making them more sing-alongs than concerts. Again, to be clear, no hate, I'd love to go to a Billie Eilish sing-along!

I love there use of found sounds, they give a fresh detail in her songs. Billie recorded the drill from her dentist and used it in Bury A Friend. They also recorded the sound of a Sydney Australia crosswalk and use it as the “high hat” in Bad Guy.

Thank you, this was a very good talk! I will probably not get into this type of music, but it was interesting to hear your view and learn about the technical side of Billie's style. She seems to be in a position similar to the Beatles or the Stones in the 60s. It's music that is free from the received wisdom of the older generation. I get a vibe similar to the music I grew up with, Russian rock and postpunk music, that started as bare-bones teenage protest songs and grew to become a huge voice.

Beth hits the nail on the head when she points to all the facets of songwriting, voice, breath and production that elevate the intimacy in her and Finneas' work. I haven't been mesmerized by an artist like this since I first heard the Carpenters. Thank you so much for your very generous and appreciative review of Billie and FINNEAS's music. I am a 67 yr. old fanboy - and following her apparel shift (bg. with the June Vogue cover and now in 'Lost Cause'), I saw that so many vocal coaches who had followed Billie didn't react now - perhaps not knowing what to say or disappointed or saying nothing (since they might have nothing good to say) - and then I saw this evaluation of yours. No judgement, just graciousness. Sometimes I've wondered "why didn't Billie sing that louder" e.g. on the last verse of the Radio 1 cover of Rob Dickinson's "The End of the World" - she builds up (and I love her cover) but why didn't she give it a little more intensity (volume). As far as the "L's" as in "pool" in "idontwannabeyouanymore", I think they can be hard to enunciate clearly. I don't hardly think that you could have been more fair and complimentary than you were - I came away impressed with you as a perceptive and a "willing to risk a little" vocal coach and instructor, who is also willing to give Billie some latitude.

Thank you so much for this EXCELLENT analysis! I'm a big fan of Billie & Finneas and I think you truly captured all the things that make Billie great and I love that you explained just how much it shows her true talent - despite what her critics say. I personally find her soft style to be a breath of fresh air in this world of singers who ONLY seem to know how to "belt" it out and do all kinds of flashy vocal runs and flourishes. For them, it seems to be less about SINGING a song, telling a story, expressing the emotion of the song, than it is about showcasing their supposed voal talent. Billie's intimate, emotive style singing songs that have something to say is so much more beautiful to me.

Billie and Finneas have a perfect symbiosis. Between Billie's delivery, Finneas' production, and their co-songwriting, they've managed to craft something that stands out from the generic pop music of their peers. On another note, I don't know if you mentioned how much sibilance there is in her recordings. You can hear even hear the spit sometimes. I'm sure Finneas could have used a de-esser or volume automation to edit that out. Or Billie could have changed her technique a bit. But they left it in, which I really appreciate. Along with the breathiness, it gives the impression that she's singing right in your ear.

what draws me to her is their style of song writing not the voice. they wrote the songs in very poetic, personal, and realistic way. And they tell a story that isn't as common as a typical love or break up story. they make it either very tragic or interesting. The song Wish You Were Gay alone is a lyrical genius. They know how to make the audience listen to what they are about to tell and immerse ourselves into the world they are trying to make.

" saying things like this could have something to do with it? To lump an entire sex of a species into one category and define them as weak, based on a very particular example, sounds almost.. Sexist? I have heavily studied other art forms than singing, and I have come to understand that doing something incorrectly on purpose, but having it still be artful is one of the ultimate expressions of mastery. Her ability to maintain control and expression without breath support fascinates me for this reason. She sings like someone who does not know how to sing better than any other singer. Think of Jackie Chan fight scenes where he is "accidentally" taking out opponents. Or magicians Penn & Teller who simultaneously show you how other magicians perform a trick, but somehow you still do not know how they performed the trick. Or any of the masters of abstract paintings. World champion rodeo clowns are crazy skilled at what they do. Doing it wrong on purpose and it still being beautiful takes an amazing level of skill.

I listened to your instructive review of Billie's art/gifts again; I commented 2 years ago. I wondered if you heard Billie sing "Sally's Song" [either Lucid channel, Oct. 30, 2021 or VENOM channel, Nov 1, 2021] Live from "Nightmare before Christmas" or her covering Peggy Lee's "Fever" at the Hollywood Bowl [on SoCalLiveitLive, July 27, 2022] with Christian McBride on Upright Bass [and Count Basie Orchestra] - Billie has - I believe - great stage presence. Or Billie with Labrinth at Coachella on "Never Felt So Alone" [ Labrinth channel "Labrinth 'Never Felt So Alone' (with Billie Eilish) - Live from Coachella, 2023; also on the Coachella channel] I am a 69 yr old fan of Billie's - she's my favorite. But I have wondered if she has an active coach, and not only one she can call on if she wants to - I hope so. At the Grammys 2020, when she sang "When the Party's Over " and didn't hit the high note - I think it wasn't a choice, perhaps she started out to soft, but I have heard occasions where she did hit it. I wonder if Billie will ever surprise with not a SONG like the 2nd Half of "Happier Than Ever" but with VOCALS kind of like that or what she does with Labrinth; I heard Billie yell at times (not singing) and she has a strong voice - I like the aspirate, subdued songs and ballads - she puts her all into it. and in a way, I asking for more - it's probably not fair to Billie! Personally, I love "BAD GUY" and if Billie did a beat like that but with a [you know the terminology - I don't] but with intensity, strength, projectioin and force - I think it would be great and well received.

With that said, I think her voice is generally small and not for me. Microdynamics is cool but her voice is very niche. Respectfully I enjoy greater dynamics as a listener such as Haley Reinhart and Angelina Jordan who epitomize on the low end and Dimash and Amon on the high end. It's good to understand what makes a singer what they are and for that I enjoy your research.

I wonder if her parents named her after Billie Holiday? It seems that as she's gotten older she's adapted a cleaner, more personal version of Holiday. Am I the only one who thinks this?

Bear with me a minute. I'm doggin' on myself here, not Billie... I never cared for Billie Eilish and have always wondered what all the fuss is over her. I wrote her off as a sub par singer hiding behind quiet lines and slurred lyrics, among other things. When I saw you had a "What Makes X Great" session on B.E., I figured, maybe its time to listen with more of an open mind. You've helped to show me how much of what she does isn't hiding anything but just her stylistic choice. Just because its more subtle than what I expect from a singer doesn't mean that the talent isn't there. I guess I've been doing to her what many do to harsh metal vocals when they write it off as 'just screaming'. Its still not a style that I particularly gravitate towards. And that's ok. We all have our own preferences. But at least I won't be accusing her of being sub-par any longer. Thank you for this Beth!!! Keep up the good work!! ::rar::

@@BethRoars I'm paying attention to the comments some people do about Billie's talent (or lack of) and I came to the conclution that the hate is based on plain and simple misogyny. Most of it is from guys who think her fame or talent is mainly work of her brother. (just because he's a guy, they put him over her)

As with a lot of the music I listen to and enjoy I don't know why I do. Most of the music I've been introduced to has been by the ladies I been in a relationship. Ms. Eilish was dropped on me as a comparison, counterpoint to Jazmine Sullivan. As to why I like both I don't know. So if you can explain why I like one I'll be on the way to understand why I like all the rest.

I think it is a mistake to choose the breathy quality. It suits a few songs but it is very hard to sound distinctive and fresh as you create new material. I found this with the truly incredible Sarah Maclachlan during a "breathy phase".... another Canadian singer Dan Hill had the breathy hit "and sometimes when we touch" but could not climb out of the stereo type he created. I have been an Ellish fan since day one and have become jaded by her taking the breathy route....blah!

Apart of her not being anything special that makes her stand out from the likes of PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks when it comes to singing, her music says nothing new. I remember how she butchered that Beatles song in some awards show. O boy. She whispers, as you pointed out, but does not sings, and Suzanne Vega (a true legend with a frail and soft voice could teach her a thing or two about how to take advantage of her vocal limitations, and to compose songs, and write great, meaningful, and poetic lyrics), her public persona is atrocious, sexist, and toxic, hence why she's receiving a lot of promotion lately from many music oriented channels. But that's my guess. Damage control. Many like her came and went before without fanfare, and many more will. That's the important subject: how to create talent with staying power and relevance? Instead of promoting and shoving subpar talent to our throats?

“Her music says nothing new”. Kind of a lazy criticism in my opinion. Singers have been singing about the same thing for years. Personally I think she puts a unique spin on them. Especially in the songs All the Good Girls Go To Hell, Ilomilo, and I Love You

I dont see the sense here! She seems like a suicidal abused and unhappy teen that wish she was dead! Kids listening to this are getting weird messages, and a lot of kids with her shirts on are self destructive and selfharming as a complication of her own negative life hating music at a new level that was not presented before her arrival in the industry. She transfers her own grief and unhappiness to her fans and that is in my mind a tragic way to make a lot of her fans(Mostly young girls) even more unhappy and therefore even more Suicidal. I think she now has a lot of young lifes taken on her conscience . But I wonder if she has one! Self hating suicidal tendencies kinds of music should not be the music that todays kids are growing up to hear . Kids today are programmed enough, or even too much in school.
