I remember playing this game through with my dad when I was a kid and it was mind blowing. It was hard to appreciate at the time just how ahead of the competition DK was but my goo-y child brain could still tell that there was something really special about the game where I enjoyed it more than Mario. Me and dad had to tap out at one point as it became too difficult for us but we still remember it really fondly, the multiplayer was amazing!

When I first played DKC in 1994 I was literally enchanted by the new graphics so full of details and the music that I still listen to today. The second was spectacular and I also liked the third even if it was a little less catchy, in 2010 I played DKC Returns on Wii and it did not disappoint me, in fact it bewitched me again! I hope to see the Kremlings again one day

I love how each level in Returns and Tropical Freeze feels like playing an entire cartoon short.

I remember seeing a commercial about this game a few days before its release back in 2010, with a guy in a gorilla suit shaking the wii remote. And then a few days later, I got it as a Christmas present! Returns is such a good game. It just about nails the charm that the original classics had! The level design is really creative from start to finish! Can't wait to replay it in HD next year! 🦧🌴🏝

I remember seeing the game in stores, dying to play it. But I was too young to have a lot of money, and I always bought other things that seemed more important. Then finally I played it at a friend's house, and I was genuinely blown away by it. Of course I then finally bought it. Great memories. Good to know I once spotted a good game by its packaging.

Amazing too is that Retro nailed the openness of the 3D Prime games AND the tight platforming of the 2D DK games! Two pairs of completely opposite play styles and both executed perfectly!

Great Retrospective. I really love this game. I have beaten this at least 5-6 times and I really love it. Easily the best Wii game and easily the best DKC Gane ever made, and I really hope the Switch version does well, so more people can enjoy this masterpiece ❤

No no, metroid prime does not play like a fps. You dont have to aim. Combat is literally only done through z-targeting like a zelda game.

IMO: Returns has better raw level design. Tropical Freeze has better bosses, music, and more creative level environments. So depends on if you value raw platforming more or the overall whole package more.

Also, I have 2 music answers: 1. David Wise left Rare in 2009, meaning it was super late in development when he joined Retro Studios. 2. The hidden gem is the rocket barrel theme

8:35 Donkey Kong might be just too deaf like Cranky or something. I took that deduction based on one of Cranky's idle animations in Tropical Freeze. 10:37 They replaced the "blow" mechanic with "pulling things from the ground" like Tropical Freeze were Super Mario Bros 2 (or Super Mario USA for the veterans). 16:22 There are some levels that do that exact same thing of killing you when you are at one move (or shot) to reach the victory, like "Precarious Plateu" (6-5) 8:59, you start the level moving a colossal spiky stone from your path and then it follows you through the background the entire level, then at the end it falls behind you while you're on a slope, if it hits you it's an insta kill, but if you survive you get to a barrel cannon that shoots you to the goal, but if you wait too long trying to calculate when to shoot and hit the goal when it turns into "DK", another colossal spiky ball will crush you and you'll have to restart from the last checkpoint. Also, in "Muncher Marathon" (5-8) 16:34 if you get to the final cannon, the spiders will stop chasing you, but if you wait too long again, the spiders will attack you and you'll have to repeat that section again. Same thing with the bosses, if you wait too long and let the tiki react from getting stunned it wil literally JUMPSCARE YOU (but at least it doesn't kill you and you complete the world). 19:12 I'll tell you a fun story: when I was less than 8 years old I was afraid from the minecart and rocket levels because every time you die appears that blue screen with the current tiki of the world and it looks like it jumpscares you 19:20 (sometimes I covered my eyes or hid under the bed to not see it), and the minecart and rocket levels just take one hit to kill both players. The point is that I let my sister beat the entire World 4 because of that, but I was so stupid that I used to press randomly the buttons of my controller causing many unnecessary deaths and Game Overs because It was boring wait for my sister to beat the level.

I dunno. It was nice to have a new DKC-styled platformer again after over a decade of nothing, but it didn't have the same atmosphere as the originals. A bit too cartoony, and all the original music was bland.
