The moment I heard them say Darren Shan, my eyes immediately darted to the Demonata series on my bookshelf. I always thought it was just a lesser known series that no one really cared about because I don't hear anyone talk about it. But it was the first series I ever read, and it was my gateway drug into reading and writing. A lot of my first stories mimicked Darren Shan's style (it's adapted and changed a lot now that I've read so many other books and series). But that series holds such a special place in my heart; it felt amazing to hear two of my favourite artists mention it

Darren Shan books were a massive part of my middle school years especially The Demonata. It grew my love for that style of horror and I even draw inspiration from it a lot when writing my dnd setting. Artemis Fowl, The Edge Chronicles and Pendragon were also massive favorites of mine growing up

Ngl, i was actually impressed with how genuine Daniel sounded and than Rustage adresses it hahahaha Worldbuilding: Oda Prose: Mark Uwe Kling (not a fantasy author, but sooo hilarious. There even are english audiobook versions read by himself in his horrible german accent) Charachters: Bit of a stretch - Hidetaka Miyazaki Plot : Tatsuki Fujimoto My partners are: Prose: Enid Blyton Characters: Gerad Way Plot: Douglas Adams Worldbuilding: Tolkien These would be such an unhinged and hard to understand books, but i'd love them

You might be right right when you talked about how when we are younger we read quite a lot but eventually stopped, only to pick it back up later in adult life. I feel like I'm in that middle spot of having stopped reading but probably soon to pick it up again. I recently read a book in my class that was required for it's curriculum, and that kinda made me wanna pick up reading again with some good books. Such an interesting podcast!

The draft section was a lot of fun and got me wanting to try out my own. Plot: Yoshihiro Togashi (because I love Hunter x Hunter and I think the Chimera Ant and Succession War arcs are some of if not the best plotted stories in fiction), Characters: Wildbow (probably my favorite author and a large part of that is due to how well realized his characters are), Prose: Pat Rothfus (I usually don't care about prose but holy shit Kingkiller's use of language was sublime!), Worldbuilding: Q Hayashida (This one was the toughest because I love hard magic systems but I ultimately went with her because Rustage already got BrandoSando and because I think Dorohedoro's use of atmosphere and just overall vibe to its world is perfect). Funny thing is, with the exception of Rothfus (who's pretty locked in) you could shuffle the other three and still get a guaranteed banger

I feel like Rustage would like the fantasy book I'm writing (whenever I finish it) as I keep giving my characters really hard decisions as that's what I like in books myself but it's also got a lot of political intrigue. I kind of want to pick up a Joe Abercrombie book now but I'm scared it's going to be too gory for me

@zacharybosley1935
@zacharybosley1935 4 ай бұрын
I'm a big fan of the Dresden Files with a few notable exceptions to some of Jim's character decisions, a lot of them towards the end. Murphy was unironically fridged, Harry performed a textbook definition of a genocide with the wave of his hands, and I think giving Marcone magic power really dumpstered the idea of his character being able to survive and thrive as a normal mortal.

It felt really bad to hear that yall didn’t like Mistborn era 2 as I absolutely loved the setting and characters. Also been a lifelong Dresden fan from his just trying to survive misunderstandings, to stopping the world from ending. Can’t wait for 12 months and Mirror Mirror to bring us more of it. That said, I did just download book one of the first law because you guys talked it up so much. Sounds like it will be really good based on the way all three of you talked about it.

So i hate to be a Wax & Wayne apologist, but Mistborn era two gets significantly better as Sanderson writes it. Bands of Mourning is a fun Indiana jones'esque adventure and Shadows of Self is a fantastic murder mystery with a tragic ending. Now i know release says those should be flipped , but Sanderson finished Shadows of Self after Bands of Mourning. The last metal is the best of the four
