Thank you for a good intro video for GMRS. Exciting take on GMRS as an "entry drug" to Ham for family members.

Good Intro, but how many individuals take the time? I'm talking about individuals that not Licensed Amateurs or grew up in the CB radio craze from the 1960s through the late 1980s.

Nice video but no info on range in the Mtns, this is one of the reasons I got my HAM license. Anyone have hard numbers on a 5W handheld GMRS can transmit with or without a repeater? Thanks.

Just like with Ham Radio, it's a big "It Depends". Can be far if you're going from the top of a mountain down to folks in a valley, but in a forest, it might worse due to the leaves, for instance.

UHF is line of sight. If you are on mountain tops in North GA you can find a repeater. I'm 30 plus miles from my base station primary repeater and full quieting. Mobile radio, dual band (also a ham) and same success.

So many variables… radio, antenna, atmosphere, terrain, etc. I can usually hit the local repeater 20 miles away depending on where I stand on my property with a GMRS antenna on my HT. Essentially line of sight. But if it is snowing, nope. Not even close.

My Radioddity GM-30 HT is hitting a repeater roughly 25 miles away from a 2nd floor room inside my house using a Nagoya 771G antenna. When weather isn't clear, I get reports of low audio/high noise.

If you have your ham license, you already know the answer to your question.

does the licensee need to be in control of the GMRS radio while the family member uses a radio as with hAM?
@HamRadioPrep Жыл бұрын
Not of the radio itself if they are an immediate family member, since the immediate family member is covered under the license.

They should let you use your HAM callsign if you have both licenses...
@FriendBears9 ай бұрын
@Karma, respectfully, using a ham call on a GMRS repeater just to contact family who maybe other disaster recovery volunteers in my view is inappropriate bc it isn’t about life saving radio traffic. That is better to use ham license on ham frequencies & GMRS license on GMRS frequencies. 73 ~ Be Safe

One license per family - does that include children who are no longer minors?
@HamRadioPrep Жыл бұрын
Per the letter of the law, it is "the licensee's spouse, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws". It doesn't say anything about if they are an adult or minor.

Please, turn off the background music! It is beyond me why KZbin content creators think playing background music over the presenter's voice is somehow enhancing their videos. We came to hear you; we are not here to fight background music to hear you. The background music quickly becomes extremely annoying, distracting, and intrusive. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your dialog we must also concentrate on tuning out the music; it is very frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.

Depending on where you are in AL, and your elevation, you can hit a variety of repeaters in GA. We have had people in Talladega National Forest hit our Flagship repeater on a HT from high elevation.
