I’ve owned a Honda CB 750-4 and a Honda Magna 750-4. I burned my legs so many times on the pipes of the CB 750 I started to hate it. Loved the narrower Magna. Performance was comparable after jetting the carbs on the Magna. It was a smaller bike but I liked it better.

To sum up: take V4 if you want to ride mainly on track, take Inline 4 if you want to use it daily on road
@Fearless154
@Fearless154 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all. If you want to ride a superbike on the street, the v4 engine is better because it kicks in sooner, has more grunt, and doesn't make you want to rev the hell out of it. The V4 produces power very violently, making it difficult for the average rider to get confidence and lap faster, whereas the I4 is much smoother and more stable, making it much easier to control and predict how the engine and the bike will behave. I used to own a 2017 ZX10RR, and this thing is a nightmare on the street, with power that kicks in way too high in rpm and is overall torture to ride, but on the track it's perfect, very foolproof and so complimenting. Now I own an RSV4 1100 and I prefer it on the street, so overall I am having more fun riding it. The engine is more flexible, but it's harder to ride on the track, and my lap times were 1-2 seconds faster on the ZX10RR.

@Fearless154
@Fearless154 2 жыл бұрын
@@KeithFlint350 You clearly don't understand what I'm saying. There is a big difference between trying to do your best lap and casually riding on the street. Everyone can ride a superbike on the street if you are not an idiot, but it's a different story trying to do your best lap time. I guess you know what you're up against when you get a superbike for the street. So mat as well, it'll be torquey and not require you to rev the heck out of it. Just like Mt10 is much more violent than R1 at lower revs, that's why it's more fun as a street bike, because you don't need to rev to 10k to get enough power. When you're at your absolute limit on the track, excessive power delivery causes you to skid and slide, causing you to lose confidence and ride slower. The best and fastest track bikes are those that are easy to ride, not those with the most power.

Everything on the ZX10R is significantly worse, from build quality to suspension, brakes, electronics, engine, weight, and aerodynamics. The Zx10r is at the bottom of a tier list in stock form compared to other bikes, let alone can rival top tier bikes in class like the Panigale.

Great topic! I have owned many inline fours from 400cc to 1000cc. Reliability and ease of maintenance are a plus. Power on my Z1000, R1 and Honda CB1000R were great and then I bought a Aprilia V4. Oh my god the torque was insane, and the sound was like a moto gp bike. I did have issues withe valves and maintenance, but the absolute power was worth it. The Italian V4, in my opinion will never run as many miles as a Japanese in line four. I put over 80,000 miles on my Honda inline 400 and then sold it. 40,000 on my Honda CB1000R then sold it and it ran like a top. On and on about in line fours I have owned. After 35 years and 15 motorcycles i now ride an Aprilia 660. To me for the street it is the perfect balance of power and handling. My crew all ride 600-1000cc inlines and on the canyons this is all I need. Finally it is an Italian bike and when the warranty is up I will trade it in for a new one because I love it so much, but I don't trust it passed 12,000 miles (at least the way I ride it).

Even within inline 4 category, a flat-plane screamer and cross-plane are totally different, either in their distinctive tune during high revs or their traction approach caused by firing-sequence. The Yamaha R1's firing order is identical to a 180° crank V4, such as a Honda VFR800. If you listen to the two bikes, you can hear they actually sound very similar. It's all trade-offs, though. You gain the benefits of ease of service and cost from a L4 as well as the odd firing order of a V4. You give up the narrow body of a V4 and add complexity to the design of an L4 to balance the unevenness of a cross-plane crank and the additional stress from an uneven firing order. It's certainly a good compromise to get many of the advantages of a V4 in a more affordable package, but I believe a proper V4 is better if cost is no object.

I love the comparison between the two engines. I would love to have both if I could afford it but I'd have to stick with the inline 4. Ever since I was a little kid, the inline 4 has been my favorite. The high ass RPM makes the bike seem faster imo. It also reminds me of the good old days of Formula 1 when they had high revving V10s and V8s.

among the 4 japanese superbike's inline 4 engines the only one that does feature something that actually gives aid to smoothness of delivery and power/torque is the gsxr with the continious cam variable technology, as sold to the public crossplane engines, in the R1 and mt10 do not offer anything in that regard that a straight, run of the mill equivalent engine in the honda and kawi does not. Oh, and I do not have a horse in this "fight", I always though suzuki do not merit any word of consideration apart from "good deal for the money, but ugly AF". How it sounds? yeah maybe, that's subjective, always thought that the mt 07 sounded like a can of bees stuck in a box, hunky and unpleasent, and everyone and their dog seem to like it, delivery of power was better than the equivalent 650 from kawasaki though.

Yes they do. Crossplane engines offer fewer power pulses per rotation of the rear tire. This allows more grip when on your exit. Dirt bikes (single cylinder) have only 1 power pulse for a reason You could argue that the general public will never use the full potential of the R1 to even receive the benefit of the crossplane, and that I agree with you on. The Crossplane is dying though. Yamaha is the only crossplane engine in MotoGP, and they haven't won a single MotoGP race in over a year. There was only one crossplane engine in the Isle of Man's top 20 racers, and now that rider has switched to Honda. I think the only reason the Yamaha still uses the crossplane in competition is because if they stopped, the engine would lose it's magic, and consumers wouldn't want to buy one anymore. They've dug themselves a hole now. @@VittorioSergi

@@MisterShifterYT Yamaha going to the great expense of making a V4 for MotoGP racing is not going to sell one more scooter. Or sell one more beginner motorbike, or cruiser, or adventure bike, or touring bike, or dirt bike, or farm bike, or ATV, or generator, or outboard, or any of the many other products they make in much larger quantities than 1,000cc crotch rockets. Your outboard motor or farm bike customer has never heard of MotoGP, let alone be persuaded by its advertising. All he/she knows is that her neighbour or friend has a Yamaha, and it's been superb. Besides, Yamaha has nothing to prove anymore by racing. Everybody knows they make excellent products. They sell by word of mouth. The best and cheapest advertising there is. Yamaha is a household recognized name - like Rolls Royce or Rolex. They don't need to advertise. And sports bike customers are brand loyal. No Honda fanatic is going to switch over to a Yamaha V4 M1- because it's a V4. Just as no loyal Suzuki rider is going to switch over to a Ducati. And even if they do, the market is so small - who cares. Your average Yamaha dealer probably sells six R1's per year if he is lucky - and makes no money on those sales. And that market segment is doomed and dying anyway - unless you are Ducati with older big bucks customers. What 25-year-old is going to be able to afford, let alone insure, a 1,000cc, 180mph superbike? As for marketing. How are you going to be able to sell R1's when you make a V4 for racing, but don't have a matching production V4 superbike to sell? It's a non-starter. Kawasaki and Suzuki know that the ROI (Return on Investment) in MotoGP is negative. And their sales and their Company profitably will not be affected one iota by dropping out of MotoGP. And nowadays a new road bike engine can be developed far more cheaply in the laboratory with computers. Racing is an extremely expensive and inefficient test bed for road bike engine R&D. This fan would not be surprised if Honda and Yamaha follow Suzuki and throw in the towel on MotoGP in the next few years.

With it's mild state of tune and just 88 horsepower, it pulls strong from idle. The VFR has slight vibration near idle that quickly goes away beyond 3,000 RPM. The front two cylinders are the outboard cylinders on the crank, making the bike narrower where the riders legs are to the rear. There's definitely something special about the roar of a v4 engine, while it certainly combines power and smoothness, and as much as I admire the v4. I have to admit that my favorite is still the inline 4, nothing can match the thrill of a screaming inline 4 revving to its limit. That always will get my heart. 😁❤

I have both a 4 inline (Yamaha FZS 600 2002) and a V4 (Honda VFR800 VTEC). Yes, the V4 has more torque at low revs, but the 600cc inline 4 has nothing to envy to the V4 at higher revs. Moreover, at low revs (2000RPM) the V4 is very choppy and coughs under load, while the FZS600 is perfect. Anyway, the key point is that the sound of the inline 4 is a symphony, compared to the brutality of the V4. But ii is really a matter of tastes..

Have you guys ever heard the sound of an inline 4 with a gear driven shaft instead of a timing chain? Good examples are Honda CB250f (Hornet) and the CBR 250 MC22. Those gears create a high pitch wine and sounds insanely good. Here's a good example : kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ2weHWsqLx7itk

I'm not really a crotch rocket kind of guy but I love raw horsepower and the sound of v4 engines so the perfect bike for me is my 2nd gen Vmax 1700. I'd love to throw a leg over a Diavel V4 someday too.

Only 90° Vs. Other configurations will sound different.
@JohnSmith12931
@JohnSmith12931 2 жыл бұрын
OK, at 6:00 you say that 90° V engine has better primary balances than an inline four. Though I’m pretty sure a flat plane I4 is inherently the most balanced engine configuration period because you have 2 reciprocating pair of pistons that cancel each others forces and it’s only on one plane. Pretty sure a V anything needs counter weights on crankshaft to achieve any balance, which is the opposite of what you said. Care to correct me?
@233kosta
@233kosta 2 жыл бұрын
Your n=2 mode is off on flatplanes. Mine gets buzzy around 6000 rpm. Of course the argument is I shouldn't be revving that low in the first place 😉 The best natural balance is found in i6/V12 engines. I believe Honda made an i6 bike once. With equal length headers. Howls like an old F1 car! But yeh, those engines you can rev into oblivion without worrying that they'll shake themselves to bits. The only real limitations come from valvetrain etc.

@@233kosta sure, but would you at least agree that the V2 and V4 are not magically more balanced than a flat plane I4

The reason why the company is not switching to v4 because of the production cost and aditional extra parts the v4 is better in terms of performance because narrower crankshaft less stress in friction, and ducati v4 and yamaha i4 crossplane sounds similar because the firing interval and the combustion is the 90,180,270,360, degree of the crankshaft spin position, and the aprilia v4 is same in the i4 flatplane 180,360 degree of the crankshaft spin position. If your have intel in mechanism it’s easy to understand. The thing that i want in every production superbikes is counter rotating crankshaft it will add extra production cost also because of the extra gearshaft, but it’s a must because it will give you extra control in agile and anti wheelie without reducing engine torque via electronics. Well ducati v4 and 800cc mv Augusta did it but those bikes are not on my wishlist because lacking of fuel gauge and cruise control.

I think the Ducati Panigale V4R is the fastest production bike on the market, it's 230 HP while the Kawi H2 was 200 HP. The H2R with its 320 hp doesn't count since it's not a road legal bike ...

Both engines are more suited for the track. A V-twin, parallel twin, thumpers, and triples make better street engines because of their torque Honda’s cb/cbr650 is a street tuned I4 so their is one option It would be interesting to see a small-mid displacement v4 tuned for the street
