Do we even need to ask this question? Apparently so. Being Jewish has always been an ethnicity, ever since Abraham, but over time "Judaism" has turned into a theology as conflicting sects of the Jewish people have argued the question of what it really means to be Jewish.
Check out this fascinating interview with Dr. Golan Broshi where we discuss what is a Jew, who is a Jew and why we even need to ask?
Golan Broshi was born and raised in Kibbutz Malkia in Israel. He has a bachelor's degree in Education, Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Haifa and a master's degree in Jewish Education at the University of Jerusalem. He completed his doctoral degree in Biblical Studies and Theology at Dallas Theological Seminary and is currently a professor at Israel College of the Bible - One for Israel.

I've been studying the history of early Christians and tbh, I'm completely stumped at why Christians aren't considered religiously Jewish. Well, Hebrew anyways. If the idea is that there's this new offshoot of Judaism, full of believing jews in Judea, and their concept of conversion is that you get absorbed into the nation of Israel when you believe in and accept their God, religion, laws and customs, then why aren't all of those who believe jesus is thr messiah just called nazarene Hebrews or something like that? Aren't they all now the same tribe?

That was a good explanation. I was born into a mostly secular Jewish home (Conservative - Ashkenazic), went to Hebrew school on Long Island and then had my Bar Mitzvah. I soon became an atheist (in the Freudian mold) but then got into the New Age as the supernatural seemed too real to deny. Still later, I became a lay Buddhist (Tibetan, and then Zen). Further along in my 30s, I got into New Age seminar trainings but slowly got into Hindu practices - puja, fire ceremonies, and chanting. I even followed A Course in Miracles (a gnostic Jesus) for a while. Nowhere did I feel afraid of not being considered a Jew - until I started to take the real Jesus seriously. Something about the real Jesus brought fear into me- if I followed Him, I would no longer be Jewish and cut off. This video reminds me of my Comp Religion training at University of WA (MA) where an orthodox Jewish professor talked about the debate on whether Judaism is a religion or a people.

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. Please answer, Sir: how many times did you read the Bible? My opinion is: never from cover to cover! I hope to be wrong! You’re having a religion, you’re reading 📖 prayers from a manmade book, you’re kissing icons/ practicing IDOLATRY, you must confess your sins to a priest to be forgiven , etc etc etc , BUT I’m having a relationship with Jesus Christ of the Bible, I’m talking to God in Jesus name, as to a friend, totally different things! We’re all broken sinners on our way to hell, before the Lord Jesus is finding us and we put our SAVING faith into Christ Jesus as BornAgain Believers! Immediately you’re feeling hungry and thirsty for God’s Words/ the Bible, to read it as much as you can and praying as much as you can! Listen, Sir, I’m not better than you in any way shape or form, but I KNOW my soul is SavedByGrace = Unmerited Gift 🎁 and I’m BornAgain spiritually and I’m certainly going to spend my eternity with my precious Lord and Saviour, bc that’s what the Bible says in 1 John 5:13 KJB! Pleaseeee, do not go to hell! Only Jesus Saves! Only Jesus is the way, the truth and the life eternal! Search for Him now and He shall make himself found by you! ((( Brain Cancer was the reason I came to the saving faith in Christ, only 10 years ago! Next year I’m turning 50 earthly years 😆/ or half a century 😆!!!

If you are a believer in Yeshua then you must convert and become a part of Israel, just like Ruth the Moabitess. Yeshua said there would be one Shepherd and one fold. How do you convert? By embracing the Torah and entering into Covenant with God. This means you inherit the commandments and all the promises given to Abraham.

My dad was raised in and partly educated by an ostensibly Christian organization. In the 1920s, he decided he didn’t agree with the doctrine that laity need clergy to tell them what to believe and what to do. When I was a boy in the 1940s and ‘50s, Dad repeatedly advised me, “Read for yourself, study for yourself and think for yourself.” The following is an alternative to some of the ways of thinking expressed in this video but there may be other ways of thinking about this subject that would make even more sense to some people. Because I plan to use the word, “religion”, I need to offer my definition of that word: Religion is the sum of those beliefs, practices and prohibitions that pertain to a person’s concept of the highest powers of the universe. Is Judaism an ethnicity? I use the word, “Hebrew” to refer to the physical descendents of Abraham through Isaac and Israel (Jacob). I consider “Hebrew” to be their ethnicity. I realize that, for a long time, the words, Israelite”, and, later, “Jew” were widely considered to be references to the ethnic group I prefer to call, “Hebrews”. However, I agree with John the baptist that God can raise up children of Abraham from the very rocks (not merely from the physical descendents of Israel). I agree with Jesus that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But (some of) the children of the kingdom (I consider this to be a reference to Hebrews) shall be cast out into outer darkness. I agree with Paul that he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Romans 2:28 & 29 Which is why I prefer to use the words, “Israelites”, and “Jews” to refer to people who have the faith of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. I consider the faith of Jesus to be the true continuation of the faith of Abraham. What is conversion? I prefer to not use the word, “conversion”, as a reference to a person abandoning one set of religious traditions for another. I prefer to use the word, “conversion”, to refer to the miracle whereby a person’s trust is transferred from what he thought he could do to save himself from sin or its consequences to what the Lord does to save (justify, sanctify and glorify) us. We don’t have a record of Jesus condemning all of the traditions of Judaism but he did condemn some of them and, it seems to me, he tried to encourage a religion based on the Hebrew Bible (the Tanakh). Conversely, I think of Judaism - ancient or modern - as being based mostly on traditions. I’ve had enough conversations with Christians whose appeal is primarily to traditions rather than to the Bible to be satisfied that most people in the English-speaking world think of Christianity as based primarily on traditions. I suspect Jesus would have a similar attitude toward traditionalist “Christianity” as he had toward Judaism. Maybe that is what was intended, in this video, by the distinction between Messianic Judaism and Rabbinic Judaism. ? The gentlemen in the video probably are aware of this - most English-speaking people are not - the reason the word “church” doesn’t appear in most English translations of the Hebrew Bible is that our English word, “church”, in English translation of the Greek additions to Bible is a translation of the Greek word, ekklisia (Εκκλησία). When translating Hebrew words that refer to believers, English translators have generally used the words, “assembly”, or “congregation”. It is my understanding that, as used in the Bible, the phrase “the church” is a reference to people who have the faith of Abraham - either all such people anywhere in the world or to believers in a specific location. So I consider it consistent with this principle for Stephen to have used the phrase, “the church”, to refer to the believers who were camped at Sinai (Acts 7:38). Traditions are not evil per se but one tradition in particular seems to me to disqualify rabbinnic Judaism from being called a church - the tradition of denying that Jesus of Nazareth is the true Messiah. Failure to affirm that Jesus is the Messiah wouldn’t be as much of a problem. The other side of that coin is that nominal Christians were just as wrong to condemn all Hebrews - even those who were not yet born when Jesus was crucified - as guilty of deicide (killing God) or to condemn all observant Hebrews - even those who didn’t pretend to know whether Jesus was the Messiah - as being “of the synagogue of Satan”. I'm delighted that hatred of Hebrews by professed Christians isn’t ubiquitous as it once was but I disagree with the branch of eschatology that represents Hebrews as being saved by an entirely different method than that offered to non-Hebrews.

Wrong. Judaizers( converted Pharisees) were a biblical problem. Read Galatians. It’s clear that they were trying to make gentile Christians conform to Judaism and they were trying to make a distinction between Jewish and Gentile Christians. Peter fell into this and even refused to eat with Gentiles according to the Old Testament law, but was rebuked by Paul to the face. This was a serious sin because Peter had already had a vision from Jesus saying that Gentiles are not unclean anymore.(“what I have cleansed call thou not common”) Paul explains this all throughout Romans 9-11 and Ephesians 2 and Galatians. It’s all over the New Testament. The church, or the elect, are the true Israel of God according to Paul. Israel of the flesh is likened to Ishmael and the church is likened to Isaac, the sin of the promise. Ephesians says that Jesus took down the wall of separation making of the two, one new man. To put that partition back up is anti gospel and anti christ.

It’s just as rational as, you may feel you’re the opposite sex but the reality is that your DNA tells you what you are-x and Y chromosomes. The truth is still the truth no matter what you believe! @astimpy7
@astimpy7 Жыл бұрын
I think there’s a profound misunderstanding that rejection doesn’t happen among Gentiles as well. It is not just the Jews who are told that they are no longer a part of a culture or ethnicity for belief in Yeshua. Faith plays into many cultures over this world. And coming out of what is traditional to one’s people, country, ethnicity -comes at a cost. Faith in Jesus costs each one of us on the earth -not just the Jews. For many in Christ have suffered rejection by their own, even to the point of death. And yes, some are told that their belief in Jesus makes them no longer a part of their people ethically & culturally because it is seen as a betrayal. They are rejected for Christ. This is something our Messiah told us to expect in this life. He didn’t say that to be true just for the Jews. He said that for all who truly believe in Him. Yes, Jesus was a Jew -but not just a Jew. He was the Word of God made flesh -and God is God overall all of mankind. God created Israel and God gave His only begotten Son as atonement not just for Israel -but all of mankind. The Jews didn’t just have a problem in the OT -all of mankind did. And if we understand Paul’s words in Romans 9-11, Gentiles don’t replace Jews and Jews don’t own or have superiority in Messiah or the faith. For there is no longer Jew or Gentile -but all are equal in Christ. And Abraham was to be the father of many nations, God would make nations of him...not just one nation. The question is not whether a Jewish believer in Jesus as Messiah is still a Jew -the question should be, who is a Jew according to the scriptures. And the answer is anyone who puts their faith in the work of Jesus Christ and lives according to the faith of Abraham. This is through the ingrafting of the wild and natural branches into one root -that is Christ. Yes, there are Jews ethnically according to the flesh. But the true Jew, as Golan mentioned around minute 4:00 -is the one who follows Christ and believes he is the Messiah -sent to redeem and reconcile all of mankind back to God. The Christian church did a huge mistake very early on by selling out to Rome and divorcing Jew and Gentile (replacement theology which goes against the mystery of God, revealed through Christ). But praise God in these last days, God’s truth is being revealed throughout the world, including to the Jews in Israel. But let us not then make a mistake to keep the division going. There is no division or class separation in Christ. The Gospel came through the Jews first, and they spilled their blood for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the first few centuries. Then they were wrongfully rejected and kicked out of the new Romanized church. But God always has His people to spread His word. And through faith and much blood spilled for their dedication to Christ, Gentile Christians continued to carry and proclaim the Gospel through the dark ages and into the Great Awakening -where the word of God was made available to commoners. And since then, there have been many missionary efforts to reach the world -Jews especially, with the Good News! It’s been the heart & desire of many Gentiles to take the Gospel back to where it started, and praise God we are seeing the fruit of that today. The Great Commission was given to both Jew & Gentile and obeyed now by both Jew & Gentile. So in these last days let us make effort to no longer one-up each other, but in the Spirit of our LORD may we all unite as equal in Messiah. Because in Christ, who we are in the flesh makes no difference. Whether Jew, Greek, Chinese, European, African -it doesn’t matter. We have a new identity in Christ. The people of our culture and of this world, will reject us -so be it. But now we live as born-again spirit-filled creation in the image of our common Saviour. We are a people who live not for this world, but for the resurrection and world to come -to be forever in the presence of our King. For every tribe, nation, and tongue, this is the hope that unites. Let the Word of our LORD be praised forever & ever. Amen

I love your videos!!! Greetings from South Africa. From my Christian perspective, I think that the Rabbi's tend to focus too much on worldly issues and that they have burdened themselves with so many of their own man made laws that they fail even in their dedication to Yahweh, let alone have the time or inclination to investigate for themselves the true existence of Christ. I pray that many more Jews will move away from tradition, remove the blinkers and come to Jesus.

You guys are fantastic, and you are doing a great job! As a Catholic, it has been obvious to me for some time, that the true Jews in flesh and spirit are Jews who believe in Christ. Since the whole of the Old Testament in its prophecies announces Christ, its center is the figure of the Messiah, and they are true Jews in spirit who follow this tradition that points to the Messiah who came to save us over 2000 years ago. On the other hand, those who betrayed the Holy Scripture, they departed from the true tradition, which was initiated by Abraham, perfected by Moses, which led until the time of Christ, and if we were to accept their point of view on Jewishness, they should explain whether they are really Jews Greetings from Poland!

It's amazing how patient God is that he listens to these arguments that the world brings up to those that believe in Jesus, regardless of where we're born. God created humankind, which means the country of our origins doesn't matter in the end. We're either His saved children, or not.

On a related note about following different religions for a Jew to return to their land. The word Atheist during the Roman Empire did not exactly mean the same thing it does today. At that time it was not about someone believing there is no God, it meant someone who did not believe in the officially recognized gods of the Roman empire. The more things change in this present age the more they remain the same.

I like how clear you are about the differences and the similarities. And that you have your intuition in place what you are here for, and came here to do. I think it’s an amazing place to heal people from the wrongdoings of others, with a twist of the truth and turning to the right way, which is in all of us the same amen God bless.

It's similar to my situation but not entirely. For a Hispanic with a deep-rooted culture and with Catholic grow-up. Catholics and the church don't keep and go by the word of God at heart and practice. The Catholic church made up certain beliefs that don't correlate to the truth in the Holy Bible (The belief of the purgatory, the worship of angels and saints, parts of the sacraments, and added scriptures by false prohets) and those who are Catholics don’t live the way Jesus Christ has asked us to live through the true apostles. To live by the truth in the Bible and to turn from sin as believers of Christ in the new covenant or the new testament. If I were to say this to Catholics or my Catholic family, I would be frowned upon and shunned because I turn from both my culture and cultural religion. So, Christianity is the true religion we believers of God the Father, the Holy Son: Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit should turn to. Along with dropping the cultural sins that keep us truly away from Jesus Christ and God.
