My favorite feature was probably the damage/accuracy reduction from the elevation difference. At some point you actually needed siege weapons when a castle had enough archers on the walls. In later games, SC2 especially, towers were almost a liability for how fragile they were and there was almost no point having ranged units on walls given how much stronger the war wagon was.

The way elevation and accuracy are in Stronghold and Crusader really does work well for siege warfare. And Firefly definitely need to bring back the strength of walls from the first games in the series, I would love to cover this is another video. Great points and thanks for sharing 👍

Somehow, the later Strongholds never recaptured the magic of the original and Crusader. Glad to see someone articulate why.

Very true! Although Firefly's latest entry Warlords did come close. Glad you enjoyed the video 🙂

Why enginers cant move most the siege and why they are important ? I call it " paper wall " theory. Wall in Age of Empire are very good, but in Age of Empire II they are easy to be broken and useless in most matches. The idea in Stronghold wall was focus in the walls as primary structures for defence making the wall very solid ! The idea was making walls hard to be broken and also explore more options to pass the defenses. I fell sory about last strongholds, just because they are less strong at all. Let me talk about the arrows. They are used for feedback ( the effects ). They can tell us if your units are effective or not ! Its the same about wall ( where is broken ). They are not realistic, but for the quality of life. The Age of Empire focus in micro for anything ( wook, mines, buildings, etc. ) and Stronghold focus in quality of life.

Yeah I never use walls when playing age of empires 2, only ever in ages of empires 1 and 3. Walls are also buggy and rubbish in Age of Empires 4, in my opinion, although at least you can put units on them lol. The fact Stronghold does walls so well, is something I love about the series. This is something I would love to cover in another video so watch this space 🧐 Walls and missiles do seem just right in Stronghold 1 and Crusader, later games just never felt the same. Thanks for sharing, great points 👍

Walls can be pretty good in AoE2, but it is certainly very different from Strongold since the whole relation with the map is really different.
