What Makes This Singer Great? Adam Lambert - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
From his distinctive high range to his unique vocal riffs and runs, Adam Lambert is truly an exceptional singer and today I’ll take a deeper look into what I think makes him great.
Having gotten his start on American Idol, Adam gained notoriety with his distinct sound which ultimately led to the opportunity to take on the insurmountable task of filling the shoes of Freddie Mercury.
As the frontman for the collaboration of Queen + Adam Lambert, he has shown he is up for the task with his range, power and flamboyance.
Having often been asked my opinion of comparisons to Freddie, I’ll break down what I think contrasts Adam’s music from Freddie’s greatness.
As I share what stands out about Adam for me I’d love to hear what you have to say about him too so please be sure to share in the comments!

I also like the softer side of Adam's voice. I was a fan the first time he sang on Idol, but what sealed the deal even more was his performance of, I believe, it was "Tracks of My Tears." He has the ability to interpret a song, and also make it his own. He respects himself and his craft, and he is joyful and genuine.

I saw Queen with Adan Lambert a couple of years ago in Cleveland and it was a wonderful . The constant comparison between Lambert and Mercury is so prevalent (and wrong headed) that Lambert addresses in the show. It was comical and charming. He said something like “I hear the talk; “he”s no Freddie Mercury”. NO SHIT!” The place exploded. Freddie Mercury was a singular talent. Adam Lambert is a great talent as well and I appreciate both for who they are and their particular skill set, which is phenomenal in both cases. As an aside; I was probably most impressed with Roger Taylor. His drumming and vocal chops don’t seem to have deteriorated at all.

I love Freddie Mercury absolutely and miss him. However that does not take away from the fact that Adam Lambert does an amazing job fronting Queen, and he does it HIS way. He really is an underrated talent. I know there are a lot of purest who think Queen should have never gone on without Freddie, and I can respect that to a degree. Before Adam I thought the same. But seeing the joy in performing with Adam that Roger Taylor and Brian May have is really wonderful. They are out there in their 60/70s still rocking sold out arenas/stadiums and having fun doing it, and so are the crowds that see them. Funny to think it but there are now Queen songs Adam performs that I like better than the originals. There are just some that he completely slays on. I think part of it is that Freddie (and others) opened doors that Adam was able to strut through to be completely himself in all his glorious flamboyance. Between his vocal abilities and amazing showmanship he is keeping this music alive for multiple generations of music lovers.

I first noticed Adam in a video performing Killer Queen on a chaise lounge with his fluttering fan, and loved his sense of humor and the fact that he didn't try to take himself too seriously. As the song went on, I thought "Holy smokes, this dude can really sing!" And hey, he's kinda nice looking, even with all the makeup. 😁 I find his confidence and fearless performances inspiring, and think he is one of the most gifted singers and performers of this era.

I loved Adam on American Idol. I still wish he had won his season, but he ABSOLUTELY got the last laugh when Queen asked him to join them on tour. I saw them together in 2019 and they were PHENOMINAL together! He's not Freddie and he knows it. He's a Queen fan just like all of us, he just gets the bonus of touring with them.

I've seen him + Queen live twice. I was very sceptical the first time, because I've been a huge Queen fan since i was 2 yo, but I really wanted to see Brian May and Roger Taylor (and his son) live. I liked Adam a lot, but it wasn't my kind of music. Well.... I cried a lot at the concerts. Adam was THAT good. Not Freddy good. Adam good. It was new, fresh. It sounded like Queen, but in a new Adam way. He never tried to imitate Freddie, and that's what is so good about Queen + AL live. And it was NOTHING compared to KZbin videos I watched before I ordered the tickets. Now I know that it's not possible to judge based on YT. I don't really care what people say about Adam. May and Taylor chose him. They would have never chosen someone average on Freddie's place. Isn't that the biggest prove that Adam is a good singer? He has to be, he's on the stage with Queen. Duh.

One of the things I love about Adam is he performs exactly the same whether its 50 people or 50,000. I've seen him with Queen and solo - he fills the room with his presence and that incredible voice. His song interpretation is so interesting - and he changes it up, you never quite know whats he gonna do. You can tell he loves music and it makes you appreciate music more... For anyone to sing a whole rock show of Queen songs night after night on tour and give us his all every time is just unbelievable. Saw your post you were doing Adam but I was disappointed you didnt give him the time you have done with so many others. Freddie is Freddie & Adam is Adam...IMO totally different styles so no point comparing. Both great in their own ways. The clip you chose is ok but his voice has matured so much since then, New video out now, off the live album of " QAL Live Around the World" coming out Oct.2nd, doing The Show Must Go On that is amazing. I recall seeing Adam for the very first time on American Idol. He stood out immediately because of how he would take songs and present a unique, original spin on the song… like Mad World. He did that with all the songs. You couldn’t wait to see which song he would choose and how he would interpret it to make it his own. In fact, Chris, the winner of that season’s American Idol, credits Adam for helping him throughout the competition. Then, of course, Adam had the chops and the entertainment factors!

What i love about Adam's voice is his ability to do a cover and make it his own. he can take a fast song and strip it down into a ballad. Example: 'believe' "if i cant have you' 'tracks of my tears'. Cause anyone that knows Adams singing knows when he sings a ballad hes gonna knock it out of the park. His vocal range is out of this world. I have seen him live with Queen and when he sang 'who wants to live forever' i literally got goosebumps. Theres no comparing Freddy and Adam. Their vocal ranges are completely different. Honestly tired of people comparing them. lol. but you should check out his song 'closer to you (live sessions)", which is from his newest EP "Velvet"

I think you just scratched the surface. There is so much time spent addressing the whole is Adam replacing Freddie debate in the fandom. They are both great. I am old enough to have watched Queen at Live Aid on TV and now seen Adam perform live with Queen. I love Adam and I agree that his finding himself as an artist is his biggest challenge. I do believe that his new music Velvet does that. His tour got canceled due to the pandemic. Do listen to the live sessions of Velvet. He is cowriter on all the songs

I have to say, that while you are right in Freddie’s song writing ability, and he also played the piano, when it comes to his vocals Brian and Roger have stated that Adam can do everything Freddie could do, and he can do things Freddie could not do. They’ve all but said in So many words, that Adam is a Better singer than Freddie. His range is a little different. Freddie it seems was most likely more of a baritone. Adam is a high tenor, and sometimes moves into a soprano range. And he’s on record as saying he rarely uses his falsetto - he doesn’t need to. So if you want to really compare Freddie’s voice and Adams voice, ( which I really hate doing) listen to Adams version of who wants to live forever from the QAL Isle of Wight concert. Then listen to ANY version of Freddie singing that same song. You will have your answer clearly. This is the song Brian and Roger say - no one can sing this song like Adam. No one.

I absolutely agree! SMGO is another very difficult song to sing. Adam sings it brilliantly. He is phenomenal LIVE! Incomparable. B&R needed the singer with the right vocal range, charisma. They found everything in Adam. Spectacular, wild frontman with impressive, powerful vocal range. To front Queen you need more than vocal range. Listen what Robbie saidkzbin.info/www/bejne/qHeuoqh4jLaHrK8. I am glad that Adam accepted this challenge and we can enjoy Live Queen songs at the Highest Level. They have achieved tremendous success! Again! Adam's solo acoustic/acapella performances are amazing too!!

Sure but tone wise, Freddie did it better, the man sang his heart out, it was more sincere than Adam's performance IMO. Sure Adam is phenomenal, but Freddie was Freddie. Notes don't matter when he still put more heart into it than Adam, these were his songs after all I guess.

I've listened to every video of Freddie performing live that I could find on KZbin and without a doubt he was a mesmerizing tour de force on stage. He was also a classically trained pianist - which meant he could read music, which Adam, by his own admission does not. I'm guessing - and it's only a guess - that it's easier to compose songs if you play piano and can read music. Adam's entire focus is his voice - sort of like an opera or lieder singer - and we never expect them to write music - though Adam DOES now co-write every song. Having said all that, Adam is technically a better singer - he's had more training in voice and it shows. His has a larger vocal range than Freddie (3 octaves and a B2-B5 semitone, while Freddie was straining on the high notes by 1985) ), Adam effortlessly switched from chest voice to a beautiful falsetto - not a weak, wispy one like Sam Smith, but then sometimes Adam surprises by using a full voice in a very high range, Adam does more complex and frequent melismas than Freddie, and in many songs he his phrasing is better because he's a master at singing a gorgeous, long legato. Adam's voice has a different texture than Freddies' but in the high registers, it's not thinner when you hear him live. I adore Freddie, - his voice and personality on stage, but there are songs that Adam does better by any measure, and now, I prefer to listen to Adam's versions. Two examples are I Was Born to Love You - listen to Adam do it in 2014 at the Tokyo Supersonic Festival and then to Freddie in the 1985 concert (I think the only live version) and tell me who has a clearer sound and better phrasing? Same with The Show Must Go On (very difficult to sing though Adam always makes it look easy), and honestly, Adam's version of Who Wants To Live Forever at the Isle of Wight Festival is the equal of any live Freddie performance. In any case, Freddie would be 74 now and I highly doubt he could sing Queen's difficult catalog in the original keys - if at all, so Brian and Roger are lucky that they found this extraordinary singer who can carry on their legacy and can give audiences a chance to see these legends in real life putting on an amazing show.

I think that if we consider only technical ability in terms of range, timbre control, flexibility, and so on, Adam is one of the best singers of contemporary music alive, and in fact probably more technically able than many of the greats, which includes Freddie Mercury. I think that is to be expected though because it is similar to how athletes are always breaking records because of not only newer training techniques but a greater pool of talent who are exposed to better training methods and technologies from a young age. For example, consider how Freddie had to learn to sing... He certainly didn't have programs like yours, access to the collective wisdom of singers around the world via the internet, the ability to precisely stop, start and modify tracks to hear what is going on, and of course, the ability to record yourself with audio and video and really examine yourself in great detail. Of course Adam didn't have access to this as well, and I expect as time goes on there will be singers who exceed him too.

I wonder why you chose a video that is this old. I have seen Queen with Freddie several times, (Ya I am that old) and with Adam. Adam LIVE, night after night, does not drop out of high notes, does not let Brian and Roger take some parts of the songs. Freddie did. Adam preforms night after night without showing any signs of wear and tear. He is amazing that way. He is perhaps twice as good live as he is on record and he is pretty damn good on record. For me (no hate please) Adam is a more trained, better LIVE singer.

You asked what did you miss. Well, if we are just talking singing, Adam is constantly consistent. He does one thing at master level and he takes it seriously. He puts his all into it...Something Freddie did not always do. Each has their strengths...since they are two different people that's to be expected. The question we should ask in regards to a frontman for Queen...who is worthy to front Queen...not who is worthy to replace Freddie...because he can't be replaced..that would be stupid...Adam is a worthy fronman for Queen. If we were to ask who could replace Adam Lambert...the answer would be no one alive...his voice is unique. His attitude to life is probably only matched by Keanu Reeves. I think your take on this was frankly not worth the time i spent watching it you offered nothing of value...I will say your singing is very good. Adam's attitude to singing song's first put out by other people is to listen to the song as an musical entity and then interpret it his way...as it should be done.

Man, I really do not like to comparing singers. Our instruments are such a unique and individual gift and everyone brings something different to the party. From the bar room brawlish banter of Bon Scott. The theatrical dexterity of Geoff Tate. To the blues dominated stylings of Dave Coverdale. How can you compare? All great singers and performers (for that matter) in their own right but all with a different flavor and enjoyability to be appreciated. As far as Lambert. Dude is killer no doubt. Would love to posses his range. Came close about 2 decades ago. lol Comparing him to Freddie? I keep a wobblehead of Mr. Mercury right next to my monitor so, to say the least, I'm a huge fan. As eluded, I believe both are very talented. To compare musicianship to overall vocal dexterity/prowess is very different IMO. I know many incredible singers that couldnt write a lick to save their life and the opposite is true as well. Awesome writers/lyricist but execution wise, behind the mic...menza, menza at best. As said, we all have our gifts for the world to enjoy. God bless.

Like your comments and reactions to Adam. Just want to point out being a "great" songwriter or being able to play the piano or any other instrument does not make one a great singer. There are lots of great songwriters who are mediocre singers. Personally, I think Adam Lambert is a great songwriter and when I hear and see him perform I forget about everyone else. NO disrespect to Adam. but he's not really a songwriter at all. and yes, that has nothing to do with singing. Sinatra wrote one song ( a good one) but still. Adams solo material is just todays pop disposable trickery. He's better than that. and maybe he could if given the chance. his biggest solo "hit" was written by pink! Freddie wrote all those classics BY HIMSELF. no committee, no 15 producers etc. this is the problem with today artists on the charts. Freddie wrote songs, he played them and he sang them. Show me one great adam song he wrote by himself. I like him, but hes more a vocal olympiad than an "artist" Ken as always, spot on.

I think Adam's performance of Who Wants to Live Forever is the best example of who he is as an artist and what's great about him as a singer. Apparently Freddie could not perform that song live - or maybe that was 'show must go on'. Bri and Rog also claim Freddie would have been envious of Adam's vocals :) The clip you used is fun but doesnt show half of what he;s capable of. I love the improvised duet he does with Brians guitar - started as helping Bri tune his guitar & evolved into a regular intro to I want It All. Hard to tell where Adam's voice stops & guitar takes over. He often directs the audio on the fly from the stage. I love watching for his many hand signals telling audio who to boost, who to reduce, what kind of sound he wants etc. I love that he is a master at musical arrangement. I love his stage-craft moving deftly between camp & butch so even the toughest dudes start to wonder about their own sexual preferences. I love his ability to convey emotions but not be pretentious & never take himself too seriously :& how he conserves his vocals (without losing power) for extended tours, how he varies songs so they never sound quite the same twice and his determination to punch through despite how he might be feeling. (note how few times he's had to cancel during the most gruelling tours). His brief illness in Europe is worth checking for how he managed his vocals before & after the cancelled date.

Never heard George Michael sing a hard rock song. People think he could fill in after singing one song? George lowered the key and said it was the hardest song he ever sung. Adam sings it in the original key in his sleep, in a two hour show, night after night. Think he could sing Stone Cold Crazy? Or Tie Your Mother Down? Or Who Wants to Live Forever in the original Key like Adam did at Isle of Wight? Even Freddie couldn't do that.

I super agree with you that as a whole, as far as songwriting artistry, presence, all the other stuff that makes someone a good singer, Freddie is leaps and bounds over him and anyone else. But as far as singing, Freddy's vocal range in the 70s was different in the 80s I think as he got older and continue to smoke cigs etc, his voice got warmer and lower . Adam could hit a lot more notes and have greater vocal range in a live performance than Freddie- even Brian May will say that. so if we're talking about vocals, I actually think Adam has the upper hand and 1970s Freddie can compare, but not late 80s Freddie. Vocally im saying. And Freddie was a great singer. And the great thing about Adam is he doesn't try to be Freddie.

AAAAAAA!!! U touched on something that always occurs to me and I don’t think a lot of people consider.... And that’s that the ORIGINAL artists being covered not only performed at an extraordinary skill and talent level- but the ORIGINAL artist also paved the way with their lyrics, melodies, style, hard work- blood sweat tears.... I see SO MANY ‘cover’ bands/ artists getting so much love- mostly from people who don’t know the ORIGINAL. What I learned myself in high school when I was really immersed in constantly learning and playing and singing..... I was able to practice to the point I could sound pretty impressive just thru hard work. I still remember sitting on the piano bench while my cousin, Candy, belted out Elton John ‘Don’t Let the Sun...’. When she was done I said OMG Candy! You are SO talented. Her response I’ll never forget. She said ‘honey it’s not talent , THATS training. I was five. Lol

Very much enjoyed your review - particularly about politics in music (please, just no) - as far as voice is concerned, I do think Lambert has the "better" voice - perhaps due to his training and his remarkable stamina in performance. To tell the truth, I "liked" FM, but was not a passionate fan - found his stage performances off-putting with his physical movements. However. big fan of his interviews - so funny - sometimes outrageous - just great - and, as May and Taylor have mentioned, Lambert has similar qualities, which make their collab such a gift. As I've also mentioned elsewhere, I even liked Paul Rodgers' performances in certain songs - and that is probably true for me with Lambert and Mercury, as well. (I might recommend Lambert's live performance of Cher's "Believe" at Kennedy Center Honors - unforgettable.)
