Tbh, I do think David was one of the greatest singers in rock music, and not just because he had a great tone and carried himself well. I don't think his best vocal performances are in hits. He put more depth and effort into the deep cuts because he never saw himself as a hit singles artist. He considered himself an album guy and didn't want people to perceive him as someone who just went for hits, in spite of having so many singles. I'd like to list 5 songs that I consider completely incredible, top tier vocal performances where he genuinely sang in a way that most people should recognize and give credit: Lady Grinning Soul Across the Universe Wild is the Wind The Drowned Girl When the Wind Blows They're night and day compared to a stylistic song like Heroes where he was originally just trying to sing loud enough to open a noise gate. He actually made the attempt to put in pristine, expressive vocals and they paid off.

I've come to really appreciate singers that honestly aren't that technically great at singing, but their performance and essence as an artist is just beyond compare. Nick Cave is another great example, he's famous for being out of tune most of the time but his performances and recordings are just incredible and captivating. I think David Bowie was a rare breed in popular music. He brought in concepts taken from high-art and the avant-garde and mixed them with folk, rock and R n’ B. One of his big influences was the late Scott Walker, a contemporary of his from the US who began in the Walker Brothers and became an increasingly avant-garde recording artist. Scott’s singing style was also influenced by ‘crooners’ and he wrote very idiosyncratic lyrics. Check out The Walker Brothers ‘The Electrician’ for instance. Cheers

@@kentamplin Thank you for your fine videos, which I enjoy immensely. The Neumann mic piece was excellent. I think Bowie's best song for me would be something like a width of a circle and of course Life On Mars .. honestly there are so many. I'm in the process of trying to learn to sing myself, I guess I will do a Bowie tune soon and put it up here on my channel :)

A great singer and enterrainer for sure. His creativity was incredible. Personally. The man who sold the world is my favourite. Probably not his most popular but, still great. Then when Cobain covered it. It was two completely opposite sounds yet together magic

I've been a Bowie admirer since 1972. And you do mention his vocal style as being of a crooner style. And you are dead right. His first solo efforts were Anthony Newley inspired, almost Vaudeville style songs - which I adore - so that kind of dictated his delivery at the time. And you were also astute in your estimation that singing in character brought forth an ability to change his vocal delivery when he sang in character, i.e. Ziggy, Alladin and The Thin White Duke. But he was an adequate Rock singer. His forte was definitely in the Crooner tradition. Very similar to the great Scott Walker. And as he got older, you felt more comfortable with his vocal delivery cos he wrote songs that he wanted to be listened to and understood. As a live performer he was very clever with the way he projected his voice and the setlists he chose. I saw him live 11 times and even I could hit the 'high' notes in my static baritone voice. But he was, without doubt, an all encompassing artist. And I listen to at least, one of his albums daily. Scary Monsters is my favourite Bowie album. The 80s trilogy are awful!!! Now. After all that, I would love if you would attempt to dissect my best mate, Liam McKahey's vocal ability. He was the lead singer with a band called Cousteau. If you would like me to choose a song for you, just ask. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you so much for your effort.

I always enjoyed Bowie but never thought of what he was doing and your analysis is brilliant. I enjoyed this breakdown more than any of the others you've done. Gives hope to lesser vocal talents that they can still make an unforgettable impact in the world of music.

Always like reinventing himself, variety is the spice of life, he wanted to be the best and he was , his lyrics and sound so unique , much like Jagger there's only one Bowie and Jagger, but 100's of similar sounding Pavorotti's although good, not unique and sing to a set formula ...true singers have a soul, a unique sound people like and above all have longevity ...Bowie for me and many millions is the ultimate of all singer song writers...some have it, some just copy on a technical level, but yawn, not music , no passion 👍

I think of greatness. If you never heard of David Bowie your not very into music. I dont think he have the greatest voice, but the songwriting, energy and passion made up for it. Stage present is amazing! He is also kind of "a freak" but it makes him HIM

Really interesting choice to analyze what he's doing in Reality tour, his last tour, so kind of definitionally his peak maturity as a vocalist (though -- also a concert where he created a unifying sound that flattened out some of the diversity in sound across the albums, obviously a valid artistic choice). Also, Bowie himself has said he wasn't a great singer. It's hard to agree with that given some of his recorded performances especially Berlin era and beyond. He really masters his vocal range on so many levels, and it's hard to name many other singers with his range and command of color, tone, vowels, delivery. He even plays around with his own accent a ton. He could pull exquisitely beautiful sounds, but had the lack of self-consciousness to make all sorts of other sounds when it suited him. He never let "singing pretty" get in the way of what he wanted to make happen sonically. Theatrical is most certainly correct. Blackstar is an especially interesting vocal performance, you can hear him even making use of an aging voice in some places to add a sense of instability or wavering, but in a song like "I can't Give Everything Away" deliver pure and beautiful notes.

Valoro que David sea un innovador para cantar en vivo, pero más me gustan las versiones de los discos...un gran cantante,lástima que se fue tan joven.
