It's true, I remember listening to the radio in the 1980s and a new song came on. You knew it was from Peter Cetera from that voice. Same thing happened last year, I was listening to a new song on the radio, it was a Christmas song, I didn't recognize the vocals but when I heard the horns playing, I knew it was from Chicago. The Chicago horn section has their unique sound, too.

Peter has written most of his songs, but when he was in Chicago in the early yrs, James Pankow wrote some of the songs Peter sang when he was in Chicago. Later in the 80s, Peter cowrote with David Foster and those songs were huge hits for Chicago.

Hey Ken. When i think of Peter Cetera or hear the wonderful songs he sang i think of Chicago in Chicago. I was born and raised on the northwest side. Great city! The concerts by Chicago in Chicago were always special. One of my favorite concerts that made it to a dvd was a sold out show at the Charter One Pavilion. Chicago in Chicago featuring The Doobie Brothers. To end the night, the hometown headliners are joined onstage by the Doobies for an unbelievable encore of 25 or 6 to 4 and Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? Phenomenal show! Sweet home CHICAGO!!!

I saw Chicago play live twice between 1973 and 1975 in Eugene, OR. I love his distinctive voice. Within the first two words you know it is Peter Cetera. He has a clean and sharp sound. Beautifully controlled vibrato and perfectly in tune. He makes it sound so easy and smooth. Even on a rock out song like 24 or 6 to 4 he is completely in control. When he sings a solo his stage presence draws everyone’s attention to him. He still sounds magnificent in the video you played and that is because he took care of his voice when he was younger. I am very lucky to have seen Chicago when they were at the top of their game. I suggest listening to CHICAGO - “Happy Man” (1979) I think it is one of his best.

His awareness of chord tones and key modulations. The way he builds a melody to resolve into the next phrase. There’s a sophistication to his compositions that, forgive me, I’m having trouble imagining a bass guitarist coming up with ha ha (joking) it just feels otherworldly when you hear it. It’s like, that was so simple…Why didn’t I think of that? But the timbre of his voice is so unique and instantly recognizable. Truly timeless sound. And that’s coming from a metalhead like me.

I'm a long time superfan of Peter Cetera. Even as a child during his '80s heyday I couldn't help be exceptionally impressed with his talents. One of my most treasured possessions is a DVD copy of his performance on the PBS program Soundstage along with special guest Amy Grant who I also enjoy a lot. The amazing thing about Peter is that he started singing in his trademark fashion as a result of a broken jaw suffered in a fight during a baseball game due to several Marines objecting to his long hair. As much as I enjoy Peter on his signature songs, another track that is dear to my heart is "One Clear Voice" the title tune on his first post-Warner Bros. album. Even if he never performs again, having retired 4 years ago, I will be eternally grateful for the chance to enjoy his unique, special voice.

Peter Cetera is one of very few guys who can hit those killer high notes effortlessly. Cetera has a very unique enunciation. He sharply "clips" the end of words off, accenting the end of the note. In live performances, one can see him rapidly pulling the microphone away from his mouth or turning his head away from the microphone. It's rather unusual, and I think part of what gives him his sound signature. On studio recorded performance, Cetera uses a lot of reverb (too much sometimes, some might say), and his voice is sometimes double or triple tracked (sometimes with harmonies) giving the characteristic sound one associates with Cetera and Chicago.

I can state with certainty I am a contender for the biggest Peter Cetera fan!! While all my friends were into New Kids on the Block, I was obsessed with Cetera. I have researched quite a bit of history pertaining to him. Something as a vocal coach you might appreciate about him is why when he sings he is closed mouthed, and does not move his jaw. The reason for this is between Chicago touring for the first and second albums, Cetera went to a baseball game of the white Sox vs the red sox. He ended up sitting by a bunch of red sox fans. He got in a fight with several Marine red sox fans, and as a result his jaw was broken. For the upcoming tour, his jaw was wired shut. I believe this is a major reason his sound became one of a kind. He was originally in a band called The Exceptions when he heard Chicago play the first time. He liked the horn section and Chicago did not have a bass player at the time (Robert Lamm was playing the petals on his B3 organ for the part) and they needed a tenor since Terry and Robert were baritones. Cetera's first full solo song with Chicago (it was on either their first or second album) called 'where do we go from here' was written after he watched the John Armstrong and Buzz Aldren walk on the moon. You mentioned how he played bass and was the lead singer (headliner for the Foster years) I always found this fascinating because he was playing the bass line and singing as a counter tenor. Paul McCartney is his idol and he learned to play bass left handed like Paul did. And on occasion, he would play the string bass. He almost left Chicago after Terry Kath died, but Danny Seriphane talked him out of it. I like how you made the point of how he was a great song writer and during his solo career, he was known for his love songs, often times where he is the one who ends up broken hearted. One can tell where he is at relationship by the order of his solo albums. His first solo album was actually released while he was still in Chicago as a sort of test album. It is self titled and when listening to it one can tell he is trying out different styles in technical singing than what he had been singing with Chicago (my all time favorite duet is off this album, I wasn't the one who said goodbye with Agatha Falkstong from ABBA). By his second album he was married (his then wife co wrote Glory of Love with him and Foster), so the album is happy, joyful songs. His third album was written after his first daughter was born with songs like One More Story, but he was at the beginning of his divorce with Holding out and One Good Woman. His forth album was post divorce called World Falling Down...I don't think I need to explain the meaning behind this one! What comes to mind when I hear his name is the Early Cetera (60's & 70's) and the Foster years Cetera is as follows: The Early years I think of his epic bass playing (25 or 6 to 4, do I need to say more?? Lol!), his song writing based on the times (against our troops being in Vietnam and the hippie culture), ie, question 67 & 68, poem 58, etc., his partnership and friendship with Kath, and writing and singing Wishing you were here with the Beach Boys. The foster years I think of him and Bill Champlin making such a wonderfully, perfect vocal pair on killer love songs he wrote the majority of, his many duets ( I can think of six off the top of my head in a 10 year period), and his acting. He was in a mini series with Jane Seymour and actually dated her. My senior year book quote, in 1995, was from a Chicago song in the late 70's he wrote called Loser with a Broken Heart: It's a hard and bitter world when you face reality, and it's hard to be who you want to be. I would give almost anything to have seen Kath and Cetera play live when they were both in Chicago together. I finally saw Cetera solo in 2005 in concert with a full orchestra. He did not disappoint. He is incredibly charming and charismatic in performance with a great sense of humor! He was 61 when he played this show I saw, and he has not lost his tenor, which is very impressive in my opinion, for whatever it is worth) at this age! He went from a counter tenor to more of a lyric tenor over time, but still has that one in a million dollar voice you know is distinctly his everytime you hear it! Sorry you asked for answers to your questions now, huh??!! Believe it or not there is still a great deal I know about him than the novel I have just written here! I love and appreciate your videos so much. I am a classically trained singer (opera, sacred, and art songs) but cannot sing rock (as much as I want to) so I appreciate your feedback and perspective from being mostly a rock singer orientation!

Heather Salisbury - lovely, brief bio of a world class performing artist and vocalist, who, I think blew his old bandmates out of the water once he unleashed all that talent out. He surpassed them all, held his own, despite the bad vibes. They just didn't know how to handle it.

Cetera was the man, " hard habit to break" was one of my favorites. Love the cello section.

His beautiful vocal on Street Player really reminds me of Glenn Hughes

The real secret to why his voice sounds original is because he’s the first POPULAR vocal singer to use a voice harmonizer where it doubles his vocal to where it’s so close to an echo sound that’s what it really was. Why? Because when he sings live you can tell what’s really missing which is that echo sound he trademark first

Peter didn't sing that one, that was sung by Bill Champlin.

That was after Peter and none of Chicago wrote it. Diane Warren sold it to them, It is a great song but shows how they dried up and had to look elsewhere for hits.
