This (and the one on Max Martin) are among the most helpful/relevant to songwriters hoping to be successful among modern music. Abhisek, I'm not thrilled about that trend either but some electronic music is very sophisticated and some is just terrible. Just like any genre - it takes talent to do it well. I don't think rock will come back like it did BUT INSTRUMENTS WILL. People like the energy/unpredictability that synths make possible, but eventually they'll get their fill of it and they'll miss the authenticity and sounds instruments bring. For now though BE SMART ABOUT IT - I think that tying in instruments with modern beats is a great opportunity to be unique/expressive AND appealing.

Why do many people find it hard to understand that the complexity of your chords or techniques does not make a great song? Seriously, I have heard a number of complex tunes that are awful and lead to nowhere for me and simple, 4-chord songs that either move me to tears or make me want to groove along and have fun with my friends - and I love The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin and The Beach Boys as much as the likes of Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth and Bruno Mars. Besides, all art is subjective anyway - just because The Chainsmokers is not my cup of tea does not make it a bad song in the least bit. The song that Rick analyzed in this video is a good tune for its style or genre, and the fact that many people love it shows that those guys are doing something right. Great video Rick! They sound like singers who could well do without the auto-tuning, but auto-tune has become a processing sound that (young) people have become used to, so they use it anyway. It's what's associated with contemporary popmusic. One can argue that a natural sounding human voice would in fact sound out of place in combination with the fully electronic instrumental part. Popmusic reflects the time we live in, so there you have it.

Hey I don't love this song, but I appreciate you presenting the great sounds from tons of different creative people. That's why I love your work! To the haters: go ask your favorite artists about what popular music they listen to, a LOT of metal musicians draw influence equally from other heavy music as they do country, hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. The point of it all (in my opinion) is learning empathy and altruism. I try to think about what techniques(production, instrumentation, pacing, key signatures, etc.) they use to tell their stories effectively. It is okay to not like this music, but maybe you can learn to understand what makes this song great to other people. EDIT: while watching this video for example, I came up with my own little(non-metal) riff on my baritone guitar tuned to F#. Very fun!

Rick constantly has his hand on the pulse and for that he can see past his own prejudices and personal preferences to appreciate the nuance and cleverness behind modern pop hits. Music is constantly evolving and there is something to appreciate and gain from being open to everything that’s happening. I’m a guitar player and found myself in a rut with approaching the instrument traditionally after many years working in conventional formats yet since delving into the new school of hip hop, rnb and pop driven by soul/gospel and novel approaches to production and value, I’ve been able to overcome that plateau and bring something fresh to my playing. It’s worth it to step outside you comfort zone. Great vid !

Love your enthusiasm , Rick. It's contagious! On another note, I think this "might" be the first time seeing 6-7-1 progression used outside of gospel music realms where it's typically used as a device or a "turn around" to resolve to tonic. Anyone have any other contemporary examples? I don't listen to much pop music ( listen to everything else) so I have no idea if the usage of this progression is prevalent in this genre of music.

Rick, I've got a theory that songs like this are actually in their relative Major, despite the fact that they don't ever play the I chord. I'm talking about songs like Justin Bieber's "Sorry", "Tik Tok", "Teenage Dream" (despite its deceptive opening), "Treasure", "Last Friday Night" etc. By intentionally leaving the I chord out, the song sounds like it has a perpetual groove, like it will never end (and neither will the party!) because the tension is never resolved to the I chord. Most pop songs in minor (or more commonly, Dorian) will still have a V (or Vm) - I cadence somewhere (Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Careless Whisper), which tells our ears exactly which chord is the I chord. The above songs don't have this, and ending on the "vi" chord never makes the song sound finished, at least to my ears. When performing these songs live without the luxury of a studio fade out, I often play the missing I chord and the song finally sounds finished. I think the composers are at least subconsciously aware of this trick they're pulling off. Thoughts?
@Roikat6 жыл бұрын
I agree that this chord progression gives a "perpetual groove" effect, and have also speculated similarly regarding the lack of resolution to an implied major chord. The subject of simple chord progressions that psychologically suggest they should be on perpetual repeat is fascinating.

This song always reminded me of "Over My Head" by The Fray. It's the same chord progression and even that lead piano riff at the end of "Over my Head" is the lead synth riff in this song. Listen to both songs closely, you won't be able to un-hear it after.

I think we Rockists here need to either open our minds or expand our horizons a bit. I don't personally like Chainsmokers, but I can appreciate Rick's work. As fans and students of music, we all need to learn to appreciate good songwriting, good production, good melodies, good hooks or even good music marketing when it's present, and I think it's present here. Rick does a great job at pointing all of that out in this video and that's why he deserves the subs, the views and the likes. Don't just dislike 'cause you hate Chainsmokers; that's not the point btw! Great job, Rick!

I won't dislike the video because it's well analyzed, but by NO MEANS this song is "Great", it is just popular and a momentary hit; real GREAT songs persist through time. IMO, by listening a few times this song, I just don't want to hear to it again. Becomes really boring, repetitive, and specially shallow, even though I understand that it may be interesting to analyze, as they may have some good ideas on their melody, but again, that is not enough to make it a GREAT song.
@PatFlanigan6 жыл бұрын
Mati Macek I tend to agree, but I guess we’ll see how this song does over time. But should Rick then only do old classics that have been hits for decades? That would get « old » fast! Haha

Other than a love of listening to music, I have no abilities of dissecting or deconstructing a composition. I envy Rick's ability to deep dive into a piece and extract its deeper meaning and the level of effort an artist put into their creation.

I am not a fan of The Chainsmokers at all, but as somebody who has tried to write generic pop music to prove it isn't that hard, it is WAY harder than people give it credit for. There's a certain art to creating hooks that will stick in somebody's head for hours and making a simple four chord progression get a crowd dancing and singing along. I don't respect it from a technical musicianship standpoint but I do absolutely respect it from a songwriting standpoint. I don't think these are songs that will be played in 60 years but I do think they have a place in the music world and think some of the followers freaking out about you covering such a poppy artist have really misplaced anger.

Hey Rick, I'm thankful for you doing what you do. Though I'm a metal head and this isn't my style of music, I can appreciate the efforts you put into making these videos and exposing all of your viewers to something we may not ever seek out. Sadly, the more subscribers you have, the more negative feedback you're going to receive. I know you may not like when something negative is written, but you the creator just has to let it happen. And with that, I believe most of your followers are of the positive and supportive kind and they can answer back to those that are negative. It's just how social media works. 99.9% of these people would never say the things they say to someone's face, but put them behind a keyboard and they have balls of steel! There's so many content creators that put stuff out and let their followers do what they do. Sure, there's a handful of idiots within the bunch, but the majority of your followers are smarter than that and can spot them a mile away. They'll either engage with the banter or if they're like me, ignore them and move on to the more intelligent comments. Keep doing what you do and do it for you, and those of us who are here for the right reasons will keep coming back and supporting you, no matter what the content is. Thanks, Stephen C.

I'm tired of close-minded rockists/metalheads who think they've got the best taste in music, and despise everything in pop music. If you really want sophistication and complexity , why don't you go and listen to the aydin's videos that Rick has posted, learn to appreciate music that is really rich and complex ? In the meantime, you can also appreciate a well written pop tune, with a simple but efficient and catchy melody and good production.

Dude, your song choices continue to be on point. This is by far the best Chainsmokers song (kinda the only one I like by them tbh). As a straight up pop-punk kid for llfe, the influences on this song are clear and speak to my soul haha (cue Blink-182 ref). One thing though, in the first chorus vocal stack it doesn't really sound like Halsey doing the high octave, it sounds more like either a falsetto or straight up pitch-shifted Andrew Taggart, either way heavily tuned to give it that nasty but great electronic tone. Halsey's voice would sound way more natural up in that range, even if they tuned the bejesus out of it. You can tell because on the second chorus her voice is blended w/ Taggart's in that octave and it beefs up the second chorus nicely. Also, I like that you mention that they extend the instrumental interlude. It's the clear EDM influence of pop music today, where vocal chorus hooks have kind of been ditched for dance breaks. I like that this song has both, whereas a bunch of tunes today don't bother to write lyrical choruses anymore. (Also the lyrics of this tune are really good.) Anyway, keep up the great work, Rick!
