Rick's level of excitement while doing this video is amazing. You can tell he is "Ride or Die" for Weezer. I pretty much tuned out listening to music in the 90's after a long decade of playing guitar in a band. I tuned out of music in general, so I missed Weezer and a lot of other bands. So, when I started watching their videos a few months ago, I got excited by the level of songwriting craft as well as musicianship going on.

Well, its played very loose and casual, but steps into a hard driving chorus. The lyrics aren't a typical hard rock subject. The guitar opens by plodingly playing around 4 notes in somewhat varying sequence. It is to the beat but loosely so. Then you have background chatter in the opening and after the 1st chorus, which is directly making fun of he "Rockin' Party Dude" set. Many times a Smart Nerd can make the average guy look stupid without his target perceiving it. Methinks Rivers Cuomo has that in spades. Metaphorically, it doesn't have common tropes to tell its story...boiled down its, "here, take this, now leave, it doesn't please me, but leave." Still, his indecision contributes to a stereotypical "nerd" narrative. just some thoughts. be well, -trout

As far as I know it started with making commercials louder in radio - if you are skipping radio stations, your ear and brain pay more attention on louder sounds, that's why radio or tv commercials seem so much louder than music or movies (in terms of sound dynamics). Some found out that if it worked with commercials, it could work with songs and then it all started. Of course loudness is attractive for our ear only for a couple of moments, then it begins to tire you but who would care besides some twisted musicians and fans of music like us?

@@sacredgeometry As we all know, it got ridunculous. Some poorly produced LPs suffered at the hands of the overzealous. The next day after I watched the music video for the first time in MTV, I went into the music room at school that had a guitar and out of intuition I started figuring out the notes of the main riff (just the root notes, had no idea about power chords). I would have preferred a song off Pinkerton (one of the best albums of the 90's and my favorite from Weezer) BUT, I appreciate this song much more now and actually learned something. Totally unrelated, but I was just thinking to myself "it's been a while since we had a WMTSG" and 20 minutes later, POOF he appears.

Hey Rick, I really like that edit at 11:55. That was cool. Along with the song, of course. When I watch your “What makes this song great “ videos, you bring out points that I hadn’t considered when teaching my students a song.

I would really love to see some XTC analysis at some point. They're too good to pass by.

Michael Lisinski +1. Me too. Would love to see any xtc song given the wmtssg analysis. What a band! And Rick is a great educator.

I noticed on the pre-chorus, when mentioning the crash compression (@ 7:40) and soloing just drums, it sounds as though he is pretty well behind the beat. Listening to the whole band, he is behind and the groove just lays back so fat. Never noticed it until watching this video. Very cool. Rick, this is honestly the greatest channel on KZbin! Love every video. WMTSG is, "All Killer...No Filler!"

Airdrums is the testament of a great song. No more analyzing needed. The talking was interesting too though.

Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly" starts off on the highest note as well. Great video, as always! Thanks, Rick!

The amazng thing about Weezer is how they can take a perfectly great Toto track and turn it into a wedding band song. They also sound great when loaded into a octrack and remixed with Venetian Snares.

Just an unnecessary and lazy cover of the song. Feels like an absolute cash grab.

your video sent me on a steely dan crazy that lasted for months, had never really dived into them before. Now I feel the same coming on for Weezer. Such a great band!

I always felt this song doesn't get enough appreciation. It's definitely my favorite Weezer song. Glad to see it being discussed in the series.

Not my favorite Weezer track but it's in the top five. (Edit) should add, well done as per usual.

Okay, Rick. I binged this series on the weekend and bought one of my favorite Yes albums after watching the "Roundabout" episode. I'm even listening to music smarter because of you educating everyone on the layers of sound and tricks. Thank you much, sir. Subscribed. Your content is too good not to.

Really was hoping the song would be "My name is Jonas" by Weezer but Hash pipe is pretty good too

Myke Kelli Don't know how he gets the stems, but My Name is Jonas was on either Guitar Hero or Rock Band, so there exists a multitrack of it in the public.

Speaking of 2001, you have to cover a strokes song one of these days
