The theme of the 2024 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago, May 3-6, is “What Matters”, a phrase intended to simultaneously represent a question, a statement, and a challenge. This topic is of exceptional relevance at a time of great societal change and technological disruption; a time when all of us need to reconsider our appropriate roles and responsibilities in the broader fabric of modern civilization.
Societal advancement in our information economy is highly dependent on the brain and general neurological health of its citizens, and society in turn- particularly one that is creating technological innovation at breathtaking speed- exerts profound effects back on human neurophysiology.
Given the above, it’s manifest that we, as neuroscientists, and as thoughtful, caring professionals who have dedicated ourselves to the art and science of medicine, have as much and likely far greater potential to improve, and preserve, the health and well-being of individuals, and of society, as any of its citizens. It’s therefore never been more important for this community, possessing a unique position from which to influence the trajectory of society, to contemplate, at this moment in history, what matters.
Please join us in this global dialogue around "What Matters" to you, the neurosurgical community, society as a whole, and the generation of new perspectives and knowledge.
