FYI, "the springs of the great deep" could be quite literal in this case. There's water below the earth's crust held back in rock called 'ringwoodite', and the water stored inside that mantle rock is in a sponge-like state, a previously unknown 4th state of water. It is estimated that the amount of water trapped in that rock is 3x the amount of water we currently see in the oceans.

Correct. Huge 'Ocean' Discovered Inside Earth By Ker Than, published February 28, 2007 The finding, made by Michael Wysession, a seismologist at Washington University in St. Louis, and his former graduate student Jesse Lawrence, now at the University of California, San Diego, will be detailed in a forthcoming monograph to be published by the American Geophysical Union. And they did. They go further 28th November 2016: "Scientists have made an incredible discovery: Earth has an underground ocean - deep underground, in the planet’s lower mantle far beneath the crust. The underground ocean consists of water trapped within minerals, and it may be the size of all of the Earth’s oceans put together. Those are the findings of two parallel studies conducted by researchers at Florida State University, the University of Edinburgh, and Northwestern University. The first study, carried out by Florida State and Edinburgh, found that water can exist far deeper in the Earth’s mantle than previously thought. They focused on how the water could exist so deep within the planet, and found that a mineral called brucite stores it. Their initial studies should that the water stored in the Earth’s mantle could account for as much as 1.5 percent of the Earth’s weight. The second study at Northwestern sought to determine how deep the water-storing brucite could go. A Brazilian diamond from a volcanic eruption 90 million years ago offered some clues. The diamond contained an imperfection caused by minerals that were trapped within the gem as it formed. The imperfection suggested that the diamond formed in the Earth’s lower mantle, a third of the way to the planet’s core. But it contained hydroxyl ions, which come from water. The researchers believe this indicates that brucite containing water can be found in the lower mantle as well. The information gathered by the studies shows that water may be an important part of the volcanic process, including “convection” that circulates the molten rock in the Earth’s mantle." At first (2007) they thought they'd found something as large as the Arctic Ocean. Now the global observations are in they now know its bigger than all the world's oceans combined, ranging from 160 to 610 miles. The zipper is the Mid-atlantic ridge.

Don't be mistaken. When Ham "saw the nakedness of his father", the Bible means exactly what it says. The problem is that Ham then dashed outside and told his brothers in an attempt to mock their father instead of being modest about it and covering him himself and not saying anything. Because what's the next thing the Bible says after Ham saw the nakedness of his father? It says he told his two brothers outside.
@ilcucchiaio8175 Жыл бұрын
I was taught the “assault” interpretation of the passage, and I can’t deny that it seems a compelling reading. But I no longer hold to it. We can turn to Leviticus 18 to get a possible meaning for “seeing his nakedness”, but there’s actually a much closer explanation right in the story itself: the actions of Ham’s brothers. Look at what they do: they go into the tent BACKWARDS, and cover their father up, and do not see his nakedness. If the phrase is purely euphemistic, why is it relevant that the brothers went in backwards? This really lends itself to the much more straightforward literal reading. I think something darker is at work here: our dire misunderstanding of the serious nature of sin. We look at the passage and say, “but surely that small act doesn’t deserve such a serious curse!” Welcome to the horrific nature of sin. Yes, it IS that bad, and it DOES deserve such a punishment, and worse. Ham dishonoured his father. That’s breaking the fifth commandment, given even before the commandment not to murder. This is serious, dire, horrendous sin. And yet we look at it and think “no, there must be a more serious sin that Ham did.” I’m not fully convinced of either reading, but I don’t accept teaching that the “assault” interpretation is undeniable fact.
@jamiebraswell5520 Жыл бұрын
@@ilcucchiaio8175Good response. I do not feel that the assault angle is correct either. It completely ignores the surrounding verses in order to make sense. Your explanation of the grievousness of sin is far more palpable. It just shows how far we have fallen as a society that Ham's act of seeing his father's nakedness does not shock or surprise us.

@@jamiebraswell5520and yet there is clear evidence that the flood story was copied by much older texts... "Noah has often been compared to Deucalion, the son of Prometheus and Pronoia in Greek mythology. Like Noah, Deucalion is warned of the flood (by Zeus and Poseidon); he builds an ark and staffs it with creatures - and when he completes his voyage, gives thanks and takes advice from the gods on how to repopulate the Earth. Deucalion also sends a pigeon to find out about the situation of the world and the bird returns with an olive branch.[75][76] Deucalion, in some versions of the myth, also becomes the inventor of wine, like Noah. Philo and Justin equate Deucalion with Noah, and Josephus used the story of Deucalion as evidence that the flood actually occurred and that, therefore, Noah existed." Also note that Philo, Justin and Josephus were all pseudonyms or aliases for the bible authors. Philo and Flavius Josephus were the same man, Arrius Piso and Justin was an alias for his son. Even Revelation is written to 'reveal' who the true author was and l can show you verses!

Thank you for clarifying the situation when Noah was drunk and Ham “saw his father naked”. I was so confused reading that passage and even wrote down in my notes why that instance would warrant a generational curse. He basically disrespected him.” But now I know, so thank you!!!!

The reason Ham did what he did was that he wanted to disgrace and replace his father as leader of the family. In the ancient world, this was a shameful and wicked thing. Every human on earth is descended from Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives. If Noah's wife was the beautiful Naamah of the line of Cain, and Noah was perfect in his generations, then we are ALL infected with fallen DNA to one degree or another. Why do you think God sent a Saviour with perfect DNA, Jesus of Nazareth? Genesis 9: 23 was skipped over to drive the narrative that Ham comitted a sexual act with his father or his father's wife: Genesis 9:23 (NIV) But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked. So the interpretation that this is an idiom for lying with your Father or his wife falls down here - If it is taken literally that a sexual act ocurred, the why would the brothers be so careful not to do what Ham did? "Let's cover up Dad so we don't commit a sexual act against him or his wife" doesn't make sense. The sin that Canaaan was cursed for - and oddly not Ham - was that Ham had seen his Father nakedness and wished to share that with his brothers and therefre not protecting his Father's honour. A bit heavy handed don't you think?

Once you read this chapter, you will understand the seriousness of the offense. You will realize that one of Noah's offspring had s*x with his mother( Noah's wife) thus Noah's nakedness. Remember, the Bible says that Noah walked with God however it doesn't tell us whether his sons also walked with God, therefore sin lurked in the loins of Noah's sons.

This is the kinda stuff we’re discussing in our Midrash (Bible Study) right now! I saw another video where someone shed light into the part about Noah & Ham. And most of this insight was over the odd wording in Genesis 9:22, mentioning “Ham, the father of Canaan…”, then how confusing it gets when it says in verse 24 about when Noah awoke & “knew what his youngest son had done to him” (& how Shem & Japheth covered him), but how Noah curses Canaan (without mentioning Ham) in verse 25-27 & blesses Shem & Japheth. I read that passage & was like, “Wait…I always thought the age-order of Noah’s sons were how they were introduced in Genesis 6:10 (Shem, Ham, & Japheth)?…! So Ham is the youngest? Or is he the middle child?” But in Genesis 10:6, we read that Canaan is Ham’s youngest son (with 3 older brothers mentioned by name, assuming that’s their age-order). There are also other “quirky wording situations” (depending on the translation or version used), such as Genesis 10:21 (Where some sound like Shem is Japheth’s older brother, but other translations make it sound like Japheth is Shem’s older brother-Wait, what?…! So who’s actually older?). Another quirky translation situation is in Genesis 11:2, where the people are traveling “to the east” in some translations, but “from the east” in other translations & versions. (So how disoriented are these people? Are they lost?) So another quirky wording could also be in Genesis 9:18-27, where Canaan seems randomly mentioned in verses 18 & 22. So maybe the story in this passage is actually about *Canaan* (Ham’s youngest son) taking advantage of Noah (instead of the victimization being performed by Ham himself, who is Noah’s middle son-go figure…). This would explain why Noah curses Canaan rather than Ham. It gave me a lot of food for thought, as your insights do! Thank you, Brother Brandon!

@gtw4546 Жыл бұрын
There is another possibility. Intercourse with “your father’s wife" is “uncovering your father’s nakedness” in Leviticus 18 in the more literal translations. If Ham raped Noah’s wife and she conceived Canaan as a result, that would certainly be worthy of a curse. Scripture never says how Noah found out what happened or how long after he awoke before he knew and pronounced the curse, but may explain “Cursed is Kena‛an, let him become a servant of servants to his BROTHERS” because they all share the same mother. It may also give insight into why all three of the sons of Noah were born before the flood but he had no more sons after.

The curse was to Cain... not the whole human race. But ... God would not again curse the ground; by bringing upon it a flood. He attached the two curses together... which they do not belong. They are separate events/issues.

Nice one! I like the clarity on the curse - this is taught so badly to kids and adults in most churches. I also think it is worth adding that this curse is no excuse for inflicting slavery, war, genocide, torture, abuse, or any such things on the descendants who fall under the curse. The law of love, because God is Love, still applies. Without the platform of love, we have no right to preach the gospel. This is why I distanced myself from many evangelical churches - because they do so much hating on, for example, homosexuals. BUT Jesus dies for them too, didn't He? So He loved them too, didn't He? So what right do we have to project hate on them? Our first regard should be to love and to check their needs (remember we are supposed to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, soothe the distressed, etcx). On the platform of love and care, they may now actually listen to the gospel. Same for the descendents under the curse.

@@christinemiller1946 I promote love because God is love. The evangelical/fundamentalist eternally torturing god who takes pleasure in the conscious torment of burning... hey, that god is in the bible. Note that I a careful to use the lower case 'g' about this - because that god is Molech. Ask the homosexuals if they feel any love from Christians. Go on - I dare you! For the overwhelming vast majority of them, it is not a "lifestyle choice" and they do not wish their lives on anyone else. Ask them - I have had and still have several friends of LGBTQ+ - and they do not feel love from Christians. They consider me "different" because I give them the time of day, because I treat them like human beings, because they have seen love from me to them. And what do my fundamentalist friends say to me as a result? That I must be gay! How absolutely thoughtless and awful! No - I am not gay. I am a standard heterosexual european ancestry white male who is also a Christian believer. And what you have do to the least of these - just as you quoted - is very much in my mind when dealing with other people (although it can get overwhelming sometimes as I live in a 3rd world country). Explaining to people that they are sinning, I am told by fundamentalists, is showing them love.. No it isn't. Not according to the teaching of Jesus. Our Lord tells us to make sure that they are not hungry, or naked, or homeless; that we can offer help when they are sick, or in peril, or visit them when in prison. That's what makes the difference between sheep and goats! (Remember that parable??) The problem is that I see evangelicals being sheep to the people they approve of and being goats to all others. There's another way to describe that behaviour: wolves in sheeps clothing. And, like wolves, they devour the weak and the vulnerable. That is exactly the position for most in the LGBTQ+ categories. Unless a platform of genuine love has been built first, these folks will see the sin preaching as just another way to kick the victim already lying bleeding on the ground. You could try to change their perspective. Some change their lives around by a long way just by knowing they are appreciated and love - because change is the work of the Holy Spirit, not sanctimonious rhetoric!

@@RUAChristian agreed. BUT it depends how you do it. If it’s not done on a platform of love your words are meaningless and a clanging cymbal, to quote the apostle. When people ask me where that much water came from, and where it went after, I tell them to look up oceans under the Earth's crust because secular sources will admit to their existence. And there's a lot more room down there for enough water to cover the Earth if it came up. So, God designs the Earth's crust to crack open during Noah's time and the water reaches the surface and covers it. Then, another geological event takes place for the water to go back down. When you find out that every ancient civilization has their own version of specifically a great flood, and you learn about the underground oceans, all of this seems possible. All civilizations came from descendants of Noah's family, so it'd be a story everyone would tell as they spread out over the world, after the fall of Babylon. I'll add that my bible describes the pairs of animals as "kinds", which is a biological term for a group of animals that are related. This word is considered high on the taxonomic level, such as genus or maybe family. All animals today that seem similar, but are different, are adaptations from the original of that kind. This means Noah didn't need to have literally 2 of everything to have every kind. The story of Noah's arc is very plausible when you research it with the intention to understand it.
@robertraab Жыл бұрын
Show me one secular source that "admits" to "oceans under the Earth's crust" that could cause Noah's flood. Ancient civilizations were often built next to water sources. Water sources which flood... Your horrible reasoning only adds validity to Utnapishtim's story. "Kinds" is not a biological term. When you attempt to apply "kind" anywhere on the taxonomic scale, it falls apart completely. The story of Noah's ark is beyond utter bullshit when you educate yourself without bias. Literally one of the most bullshit stories in that whole book.

Outstanding video, sir! You're one of the first people I've heard on youtube discuss the fountains of the Great Deep and the opening of the windows of the firmament producing the Great Flood, and discussing that when Ham saw Noah's nakedness, it meant he impregnated his father's wife (his stepmother? his own mother?), who gave birth to Canaan as a result. This is why Noah curses Canaan and tells him he will forever be the servant of his brothers, Shem and Japheth.
@jamiebraswell5520 Жыл бұрын
So if seeing their father's nakedness is not literally the problem, then why do the brothers enter the room backwards carrying a blanket so that they can cover Noah without seeing his nakedness? An interpretation needs to utilize the entire context, not just the one line of scripture. An assault on Noah's wife is not even hinted at, and it certainly has no bearing on the two brothers covering their father up. How does the reaction of the two brothers factor in to an assault????

Two other things that often get overlooked, one you somewhat mentioned. First, the animals are said to come in two pairs of unclean and seven pairs of clean. In other words, there were four of every unclean animal, two males and two females, and 14 of every clean animal, seven males and seven females. Second, we tend to focus on the dove bringing in an olive branch that we forget Noah sent a raven first. The ark landed on land and Noah waited for the waters to go down further. First he sent a raven to see how dry the ground was. Once the raven never returned, they knew the ground was dry enough to walk on. Next he sent a dove to see how the vegetation was doing. Once the dove didn't return they knew the trees were big enough for the bird to live. But they didn't leave until God opened the door of the ark, just as he closed it before the flood.
