Most traumatic event for me "with a happy ending" was whilst going through 20 hours or so of labour with my first baby & being told his heartbeat had stopped 😮😮! My husband & I were SOOOO frightened & emotional. I was raced into the surgical ward but the Dr said no time for a ceaser so he'd had to do a "full" episiotomy & use the god-awful silver forceps to deliver! My son came into the world blue & unresponsive BUT the amazing nurses & Dr worked on him & he is now this huge, tall, bearded, tattoo'd, gorgeous, sensitive, 28 year old young man... And we the luckiest to have him ❤️ PS: love your Mum

I worked in a children psychiatric hospital for a few years. I had one day walked into a terrible situation where two staff were caught in a laundry room doing inappropriate things to each other and my supervisor had caught them and was in a screaming match with them. Fifteen minutes later after the kids were left alone my supervisor finally came and told me to go to that unit until she could figure everything out and finish kicking the employees off the property. I proceeded to go to the unit, and was immediately stabbed in the head several times and all over my back. The screaming match woke up most all the children on the unit, and one was placed there because he had tried to kill his own mother. When they left the unit the laundry room was not shut, and he grabbed a broom, broke it in half, and waited for me to come on the unit. He then crept up behind me and tried to kill me. It took me many years before I could return to mental health, and do what I love which is helping people. I still suffer from flashbacks anytime I feel someone behind me, but nothing else in the whole world satisfies me as much as taking care of other people and letting them know there is still good in this world. The pay sucks, but I am alive, healthy, and making a difference no matter how small it may be.

Laura you truly are an amazing person, I love watching and listening to you. My trauma story (told in a disorganized way lol) when I was 13 or 14 I lived in a house with my mom and 2 brothers, behind our elementary school. My parents are separated and my mom had a boyfriend who was over a lot. One day my 2 brothers were with my dad (I think he had them for the night). I imagine at this point you can perhaps tell I don’t have the best relationship with my dad. So I was home with my mom and her boyfriend and I remember expecting my brothers home that day. I was in the living room and my mom and her boyfriend were out back. I see my dads vehicle pull up kind of fast and aggressive into our front yard, I watch him jump out of his vehicle and run around to our backyard with a shot gun. I’m obviously frozen with fear, but all I can think of is my brothers so I run out to get them but their not there. As I run back in I can see and hear out back that my mom gets up screams for her boyfriend to run. My dad shoots the shot gun towards his direction (I think 2 shots) but misses, turns around and runs back to his vehicle & drives away fast. My mom calls the cops and eventually my dad got arrested (I was told her threw the shot gun out the vehicle that was found later). I don’t remember exactly the details but my brothers were safe and mom got them home. That’s my story and thanks for reading.

My mother was an addict/ mental health patient. One day, my mother and father engaged into a fight. My mom grabs a knife and my dad grabs is (3 girls) and barricades is in a bedroom. You can hear my mother screaming and stabbing the walls.. she eventually stand through the door and through my dads hand. He took us with him to the emergency room. I remember watching the doctor stitch his hand together. That’s just one story of a life full of hurt. My childhood sucked so bad. And I wonder why I’m depressed and have anxiety. Never talked about this anywhere with anyone.

Once I was reading some ghost stories, so I was already spooked. I had my leg hanging off the bed. Never a good thing in these kinds of stories. I really had to pee, so I get off the bed, and as my feet hit the carpet, something pulls me under my bed. I’m fighting for my life to get free, kicking and screaming. I finally break free and start to get away when I get pulled under again. As I prepare for the fight of my life, I hear laughter. Turns out it was my older brother messing with me the whole time!

Once when I was about 8 or 9, I was swimming in the back yard. I was weaving in and out of the spaces between the ladder steps under water. I was a pro, or so I thought. I went to go through again, and my head got stuck. I’m frantically trying to get my head out of the step once, twice, three times. I’m still stuck. I take a quick second to make a decision. I’ll take a second to calm down (quickly), then try once more, and if I can’t get my head out this last time, then I will just have to die. I was preparing to just let myself die. Well if you can’t tell it worked because I’m still here.

First off, I LOVE that you did this with your mom. Okay here is my crazy story (I don’t usually write comments, but here I go!) I took a road trip with my mom from AZ to NC when I was 14. We stayed in a hotel in downtown Memphis, but didn’t arrive until about 10pm. We were starving and asked the hotel receptionist to point us to the nearest open restaurant. She gave us a map of a parking garage to park in, and the restaurant was only a short walk from there. We followed the map and the parking garage was open, but 100% empty! I’ve never seen an empty parking garage before. It gave us the creeps but we knew the restaurant was close by, so we parked on the 2nd floor near the stairs. Turns out those stairs lead us right to an ally. There was no safe way around it and at this point it was close to midnight. Nobody was in the ally so my mom instructed that we just walk fast to the restaurant and call a taxi back to our car. In the middle of walking in a very dark ally, a group of 8 men start circling us. They came from who knows where! My mom immediately grabs my arm and locks it with hers. She told me to grab my phone and call 911 because these men were approaching us quickly. All of them were talking over each other telling us to stay calm and follow them. We were trapped. At this point I’m panicked and digging for my phone in my purse. My mom starts saying “please leave us alone, I’ll give you my sunglasses! I’ll give you my wedding ring!” We had no cash on us. At this point, I was convinced something terrible was going to happen. Right when I get to my phone (I’ll never own a large purse again), a man down the ally way screams “GET AWAY FROM THEM!!” He shoves his way through the circled men around us and grabbed us. He said, “I’m helping you get out of here!” He rushed us to the Main Street and looked at my mom and said, “You are in the most dangerous part of Memphis, what are you doing walking your daughter down a dark ally??” My mom was so embarrassed but so thankful for him. He was a homeless man so we gave him everything we could to thank him. He walked us to the restaurant and said once we are done eating, call a taxi and don’t step foot out the door until we see the car. We were so thankful that we made it safe. We are so thankful for that man. I have never felt in so much danger before, and I don’t know how he managed to pull us away from such a large group. Needless to say, we learned a huge lesson and reported our experience back to the receptionist who drew us the map!! Hopefully preventing that experience for any other guests.

Scariest story ever was when my husband, children and I were working on his family’s cabin. In front of it is the Santa Ana River and a road, on both sides and behind it is wilderness with bears, cougars, coyotes and bobcats. My husband was working on the plumbing, so we had to hike up the flood plain to use the “outdoor toilet”, aka, a hole in the ground. I told my husband I had to “use it”, so please keep an eye on our three children and our two nephews, the oldest of whom was nine years old. I had crossed a smaller stream and was on the flood plain, surrounded by cactus, steep drop offs, and rattlesnakes everywhere, when I heard our two year old calling, “Mommy!” I was wondering why my husband was bringing the kids up when he knew I was using the facilities, when who should arrive but ONLY the two year old, luckily, with our huge, Akita mix dog. Her pants and shoes were wet, so she’d obviously crossed the stream, all by herself. When I realized she had wandered off by herself and I thought of the road, the river, the wilderness and the wildlife it was all I could do to not flip out and scare her. Luckily, our hero dog saw her leave, and brought her to me. Thirty years later, and my husband STILL hasn’t lived that one down. Scariest experience ever.

Laura, I’m a fellow IDIOT and have more stories than any single therapist can manage safely. I think I’ve probably even put a few personal therapist in therapy themselves 🤣 I’m easy you find, (because I’ve got nothing to hide), oh yeah and I was even a carny for a stint😮 My life has been a ride. Feel free to reach out. So so many IDIOT stories.. so many. By the way, loved your mom. She feels like “home”. My mom wasn’t around much when I was a kid but your mom reminds me so much of so many moms that tried to fill her shoes for me but being the IDIOT I was, I never hung around one place too long. That’s ok though because Life sucks and then you die.

I've actually had a pretty adventurous, unconventional life, and have had too many scary stories to recount. They're not all fun to tell; I have CPTSD from them, starting back to when I was a child. But my parent (my dad) also taught me (by example), that when things get really ludicrously bad, that's when you laugh. It takes the power of the awfulness away in that moment, and resets your perspective. I now have a very dry, sardonic, sarcastic sense of humor, that pops up in darkness a lot of the time.

When I was a kid we lived in a poor gov funded neighbourhood and all the houses has renovations done one year. They replaced all the front doors and security doors but the locks on the doors had repeats so the same key could open 3-4 houses on the street . Some dodgy people figured it out and one night my mum and I laid in our beds listening to someone raiding our kitchen , eventually I called out “mum” which sent the intruder into a panic and as mum and I both reached the hallway at the same time we saw the back of a person run out the front door and they’d left the light on and some of the cupboards open. We put some bolts up on the inside of the doors until eventually , the housing department had more complaints of similar occurrences in the street that they sent lock smiths to change the locks. As I got older I couldn’t help but think of all the times prior to us hearing the invasion where we had stuff go missing and wondered if it was mums imagination or was someone regularly just going through our house in the night
