The was the case for a few hundred years. You have to go back to the 1600s to see Ukrainian territory not controlled by Russia. Back then the current-day Ukraine region was split between the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania to the north and West, and the Khanate of Crimea to the south and east.

I think it makes no sense for Russia to stop anymore. They need to take it all. If they stop only with the parts that they have now, what we going to see is in another 10 years or so, US and UK will militarize whatever part of Ukraine is left, will turn even more Ukrainians into crazy nazis ... And we gonna see another war, but more bloody. I think the current leadership should not have any control over UA and all the Western agents must be removed. I doubt that can be achieved through negotiations. We might see RF taking all of UA for demilitarization and denazification. Besides, Putin has never specified exactly which part of territories this includes. That means the option is open for the whole UA. I just hope Poland doesn't barge in, or it might earn itself a demilitarization mission as well.

It's clear that they will try to pave the way for long term low intensity warfare. Basically like Israel vs Palestine, where they keep shelling eachother, terrorizing the public. It's possible that Ukraine will not give up anything and that all Russia can achieve diplomatically is a ceasefire. Russia doesn't need to negotiate with ukraine to meet most goals. They just need to make an agreement with local leaders and the populace in occupied territories. This has already been done for the most part. All that remains is to capture the missing territory. Lugansk could be incorporated within 2 weeks.

Ukraine has been armed by the US and NATO since the coup in 2014. Also there have been foreign instructors in Ukraine since that time. They advised the Fascist Neo-Nazis on urban warfare tactics to kill civillians in the Donbass and right across the south of Ukraine including Mariupol (liberated by RF) and Odessa (soon to be liberated). The west/NATO/US have buckets of blood on their hands murdering civilians in the Donbass. If not for the Russian Federations intervention when the DPR and LPR were recognised by Moscow as independent republics and Russia moved a small part of its army/airforce into the Donbass to stop the inevitable slaughter that Kiev was planning in March/April of this year.
