What New Coast Guard Swabs Go Through On Their First Day At The Academy | Boot Camp

We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new freshmen, known as "Swabs," at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. Day one marks the beginning of "Swab Summer," a challenging seven-week basic training program all future cadets are required to complete. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all swabs entered a 14-day restriction-of-movement period, known as ROM. According to the Academy’s superintendent, all 271 swabs tested negative for COVID-19. Their training officially began on day 15, which included a physical fitness exam, haircuts, sailing lessons, and drill practice on the Academy's Parade Field. Training is overseen by the Cadre, a group of juniors tasked with leading the swabs through the seven-week program.

Allowing themselves to be yelled at, marching logn hours in the humid heat while wearing mask...who would put themselves through that? Admiral Kelly was the CO of Cape May as an O-6 when I went to boot camp in 2012. Now superintendent of the CGA. And he still looks the same. That's impressive.

He more than likely has a healthy lifestyle. It's amazing how eating right, exercising, and abstaining or minimizing bad habits can do. I did 20 years in the Navy, and many people are shocked that in my early 40s... they usually say I look too young to be retired from active duty. There are people my age who did the same time as me, and they look old AF because they ate crap, smoked half a pack a day, drank alcohol in excess, and didn't exercise save for semi-annual PT tests.

i did my enlisted time, i think coast guards a great gig for people that need a career and aren't from rich families or just want to serve a few years. The benefits are great and you'll almost certainly travel somewhere you've never been. But it does have trade offs like not having full control where you live or for how long.

after the Corps the puddle pirate's mission is EASILY at or beyond the level of VITAL importance, difficulty, and danger as ANY other military or paramilitary organization !!! They also have the most challenging (after the Corps) new recruit boot camp. One place the Coast Gaurd exceeds ALL...even my beloved Corps is the clarity of mission and visible straight line from their actions to the safety and welfare regarding the citizenry of the United States of America. Aside from the whole Asylum Seekers issue they can justifiably call themselves the good guys. After I came home I went to work for the D.O.J. and was extremely surprised by how frequently our missions overlapped and ran parallel. I believe that if people had a clear idea of just what the Coast Guard does on a daily basis. - The HUGE responsibility they shoulder + the breadth & scope of their slice of the freedom pie they would EASILY garner AT LEAST the same level of respect, gratitude, and awe that the Tier 1 groups do...at the very LEAST. Thank you for your bravery, dedication, integrity and professionalism. I salute you all. The Coast Gaurd is a shining example of what each branch strives to be. This is for cadets who will become officers through the 4-year academy program. "Boot camp" is for recruits that will be enlisted, and is not held at the academy. If you enlist, you would not be part of Swab Summer at CGA.

yes there is but only 1 week during the 2/c summer, which is "junior year" summer, for 2/c cadets. It is called "range week". But that's it, unless you join one of the clubs related to firearms which is optional.

No. Once you finish the academy, you become a Coast Guard officer. The 8 week Bootcamp is only for those who will be entering the Coast Guard as enlisted.
